    There is a reason Tracker is in his workout clothes. Most people outside the Special Operations community don't realize that the acronym "SEAL" actually stands for "sleep, eat, and lift"... He just came from the gym.

      I heard stories from a sub crewman of SEALs assigned to them. About how they'd spend a good chunk of the day running on a treadmill nonstop for several hours.

    Polly realized that GI Joe had gotten crazy at this point, pooped on that file card and flew away.

    There's an old sailor's idiom which is usually reserved for describing the aftermath of consuming bad chowder, but could also apply to the state of that file card: "looks like the portside hull got a fresh coat of wet brown."

    Special Missions #1 is one of my favourites of the total Marvel run. It's got Joes, Cobra, October Guard, Cold War intrigue.

      Me too! One the things I enjoy most about the Special Missions stories, is that the second tier characters get a chance to shine just as much as the main characters do. Also I really enjoyed the Cold War intrigue of many of the stories since this is an area of history I have an interest in.

    Top tier review! Coincidentally, Old Stinky Diver arrived in my mailbox yesterday. He and Mercer v. 2 took their place among the Mustachioed Menacers. He is a great looking figure.
    In the video, you ask about the stains: Tears of Disappointment. The original owner was the originator of the first, and to date only, fan-club devoted to Polly*. He shed mighty ruddy tears upon realizing that there was no parrot on the accessory tree. Direct contact between Tears of Disappointment and skin is ill-advised.
    * Fun fact: Although the name implies a singular focus, the multi-faceted Polly-Con is one of the few large fan group events that was not subsumed into Has-Con. The yearly gathering is the other thing for which Britt, Iowa is known.

    If they have to have SEALs in scuba gear, at least this one looks good doing it. And a 1994 figure with the weapons in a non-neon color?! Color me shocked! There's no real reason this had to be Shipwreck, this could just as easily have been Wetsuit v2 or Torpedo.

    I don't know why they made Shipwreck a Seal. On his previous card back he served in Vietnam as a Riverine Sailor. Shipwreck was a Boat Guy a very storied and legendary group of Sailors that started with the WWII PT Boat Crews and continue with today's SWCC, Riverine and Landing Craft Sailors.

    • @dubuyajay9964
      @dubuyajay9964 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those things aren't mutually exclusive. The men who operate the craft SEALS and boarding teams use to get on ships have their own MOS. I could see a ship operator applying for entry into BUDs.

    • @GRIGGINS1
      @GRIGGINS1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dubuyajay9964 I was a Boat Guy (LCUs). My brother was a Boat Guy (Riverine Sailor in Vietnam). The Navy has rates not MOS. SWCC are part of Special Warfare Command and operate the boats the Seals ride on. Seals don't drive any surface boats . Navy boarding teams are members of Regular Navy ship crew. They are specially trained for boarding operations. Shipwreck should have just been labeled a Riverine Sailor in version 2.

    A more appropriate name for Eel version 2 would be "Swimmy Booger Bugman". I like this version of Shipwreck better than Wetsuit and maybe even Torpedo which is really surprising for 1994 G.I. Joe.

    The original Hit & Run’s machine gun is slightly different to Shipwrecks. Hit & Runs has a rounded part up towards the barrel of the gun. That’s how can differentiate between the later issues of that weapon. 👍 This is definitely one of the better figures made after 87/88. Great review Commander

    I've got three different versions of this figure in my collection, none of which I use as Shipwreck. I just don't see Shipwreck as a Navy Seal when we already have three Navy SEALs in G.I. Joe. This figure does make an excellent generic troop builder for a squad of G.I. Joe divers.

    My son had him and he was used as a diver, at least he didn't have the outlandish colors of other 90's figures. The plus to having all those accessories was that my son could give the rifle to a figure that he thought would be better as a sniper.

      I agree, "There's No Place Like Springfield" is one of the best episodes of the 1980's G.I. Joe cartoon. Even watching it as a grown up, it still hold up when compared some of the storylines. Defiantly plan on adding Shipwreck version 2 to my collection in the near future. I must say in terms of accessories he certainly faired a lot better than most of the 1993/1994 action figures. Hit & Run's 9mm SMG, and knife, along with Shockwave's pistol are some of my favorites along with Iceberg's M60 and Leatherneck's M16A2 with M203 grenade launcher.

    i never was a fan of shipwreck but this version kicks ass. even the gimmicky rocket launcher sorta works for the figure. shocked at how well this looks this late into the line. that stain is how shipwreck became stinky diver, he ate polly because there was no KFC, the guilt gave him digestive problems, broke his sanity to an alter ego....and he can never be "clean" in his mind again! the show isnt what it seems to be, its shipwreck's mind creating a false world to help him cope...he is really in a mental institution talking to some toys in a psych ward. very edgy!

  • @cronocomics
    @cronocomics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Definitely a more serious tone for Shipwreck. The cartoon interpretation of the character (which everyone associates with the version one figure) renders him a bit less than a jester. If version two would have been released under the Sunbow cartoon it probably would have given Polly a diving suit and breathing tank.

This look is more like one that fits the GI Joe original theme before it got all crazy. The weapons are blah, but the M4, that top secret devise on his chest is a Draeger rebreather system. SEALs go to Basic Underwater Demolitions School first. It's the basic hurdle to entry. They might be trained to operate on any terrain, but how do they get from the boat to the other terrain? They're still the Navy, and they still use boats first and foremost. For SEALs, the diving is as much about deployment as it is anything else.

    • @roguishpaladin
      @roguishpaladin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, but I think the point was that SEALs do so much than underwater demolitions, but with the exception of the 24-Hour Fitness SEAL we've only ever seen them in diving gear. If you google for images of Navy SEALs you don't see a lot in diving gear, and while I do admit that publicly available photos do not necessarily represent the proportion of time spent in certain gear, it does represent how the SEALs would like to be seen.

    • @simpleanswer8954
      @simpleanswer8954 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roguishpaladin I'm not going to guess how they 'want' to be seen. I only know what I know from the few I've met and the autobiographies I read. One of the biggest reasons to use a SEAL team instead of some other special forces team is for aquatic deployment. It's their shining skill that no other team can match. They deploy from submarine torpedo tubes, then land and fight.
      If you're going to examine it from the perspective of a toy manufacturer, what's the benefit of a SEAL over a Ranger when the SEAL is dressed casually like a typical GI Joe? What appeal does that toy have? HCC788 is an enigma of toy collectors. I never knew a single child that gave a crap about realistic military specialties.

    • @roguishpaladin
      @roguishpaladin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simpleanswer8954 It's not guessing. If a SEAL team member is getting photographed in a combat or training situation, odds are very high (and thus the proportions are very high) that the photo depicts SEALs the way the Navy intends. Take, for example, www.navy.com/careers/navy-seal and www.sealswcc.com/navy-seal-training.html. It's a little harder to get frogman photos - military.com has one, and there's some at www.navysealmuseum.org/ (but there's more non-frogman photos). Their public image is intentionally multi-discipline. Arguably their most famous mission in recent years was a helicopter drop into a walled compound very far away from the water.
      As for giving a crap about realistic military specialties, GI Joe and the attention that Hama put into the file card and comics helped me learn about them. While I did not serve, I feel like I'm not complete in the dark, and that's good for a civilian in my opinion. I like Torpedo, but I like other outfits too.
