Cryptanthus Bromeliad Care || Earth Star/ Starfish Bromeliad

  • Cryptanthus, also known as the Earth Star or Starfish bromeliad are fun little houseplants! The cryptanthus are perfect for low to medium light locations with high humidity. Their love for a nice humid environment makes them especially well-suited for growing in terrariums, much like most small bromeliads. Though these guys like a nice moist potting mix they can dry out for a bit also, so long as the air around them is humid.

Just unboxed my very first Bromeliad (Red Earth Star). Awesome info. Thank you for sharing. I feel like I can give him a good home now. After quarantine his pop of color will look awesome sitting on the humidity tray among the green of my pothos. So excited!

I got a beautiful Cryptanthus elaine for a mourning gecko vivarium I'm planning, and I've been terrified of killing it by not understanding its needs. This is the most informative video I've found on their care so far! Thanks so much, feeling much more confident now.

I know it sounded like they are difficult but they can take some drying out, as long as it isn't on a regular basis. should be just fine😊.

I just love these..I have a red varigated one in a terrarium (house shape). Absolutely no trouble from this beautiful little plant. In a bright spot gets red, out of sun... turns more green...a real trooper, almost no care in terrarium....water when dry...And I Love that it stays small...some terrarium plants out grow their space...in no time ....this stayed tiny... it's at least 6 years old now... still small. Just love its color in a terrarium. Stay warm...Earth star....love that name...makes me Love it even more.

It is a great name! The ones in this video are still growing strong in their terrarium, and ive probably only watered that terrarium maybe 3 times over the last couple of years. Absolute troopers!

Thanks for the info. I had a Cryptanthus years ago and it literally pulled itself out of the pot by the leaves. The pot may have been too small, and I may not have watered it often enough (it was a long time ago). Someone gave me a rootless pup the other day, so I'll give it another go. Thanks again!

Hi Jeff, perfect timing with the video cuz I'm going to be turning an aquarium into a terrarium of some sort. Right now I'm only in the research and planning stage. Hopefully with spring right around the corner (I'm hoping anyways LOL) the garden centers and nurseries will be getting more plants in so I don't have to spend a crap ton of money on shipping which then I'll have more money for plants LOL. Anyways, thanks for all of your very helpful info and take care!💚🌺🌿🌴

I was walking through the store yesterday and one of these lil buggers jumped into my cart...
I like new friends and I've never had one of these before! I keep a worm bin so I have constant access to castings. I also have ozmocote. Would mixing them be too much? I know ozmocote is slow release and castings require the plant to pull nutrients as needed. I rarely use the ozmocote and favor castings, but I REALLY want this lil dude to live ( I imagine the forest floors it's used to is VERY nutrient dense). He's so pretty!
Flowers: Ok so flowers are hidden and only bloom once before it dies. A) drag. B)can you remove the flower and prolong it's life (if you can find it)? C) do the pups grow as a mini plant like succulents or is it just a different looking 'leaf' that needs to be removed to propagate? D) do the pups grow off the mother or does the mother vine out to plant a pup next to it?
I'm going to try to find an area above my aquariums to park this bad boy, I hope it lives. I live in a VERY old building in WA state so the natural humidity should be ok, however, I'm from the desert and constantly have fans blowing to keep from encouraging mold from growing (a problem in this building, but so far I'm unscathed). I guess worst case scenario he goes into a terrarium (how BIG do they get before dying?!) with some isopod buddies.
So...that's my novella questionnaire for you. Going to rewatch the video again, you've got a lot of GREAT information in the video and is very helpful! Thanks for any reply forthcoming and thanks for the video!

I've had several of these and my last one kept growing more from the center. When I tried to repot, about 5 of them broke off easily from the center, so I'm now trying to propagate them. I've never had success with that. No roots seem to form. Can you do a video on propagating? Do you keep the babies wet while trying to grow roots? Thank you. This has been a helpful video!

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

thank you so much! The fittonias can dry out a little bit, they don't have to be constantly wet. main thing is to water it when the leaves start to droop and get a feel of how long that takes and just water the day before it seems to start to droop.

So I’ve had mine for a few years but for some reason instead of just babies popping out the sides (that happened a few times) but also mine kept splitting in the middle, I’m worried it happened maybe bc it wasn’t in a big enough pot maybe? But the split parts that pop off live just fine with their bottom in water, but it never roots, and if I plant in soil it dies, so I’m guessing I screwed up? Any ideas? I’m pretty sure I just should’ve moved it into a way larger pot or something

Tropical Plant Party so kind of off subject, I have this tiny little 10 gallon tank that has coconut fiber in it and a Pothos growing in there. I had the end of a bag of potatoes and some of them had some impressive eyes on them so...... I cut a big chunk of potato off behind the eyes that were the biggest and planted them in the tank with the Pothos lol. I didn’t really have much hope that anything would happen but today... today I saw a little green shoot up against the glass about an inch underground still. I can see it’s tiny root system and everything!!! When I first realized what I was seeing my heart skipped multiple beats lol 😂
I wanted to share ... there is no emoji for how excited I am about my tiny potatoes 🥔
