Thank you for bringing back some great memories for me ! I did this with a friend in 1990 and yes the story still persists of being robbed :). Time moves on from a sleepy Lake Atitlan. When we arrived on the other side of the lake we were advised to hire a guide or be robbed and up popped a kid to show us the way. Dont remember seeing any other climbers and spent a fabulous 3 months in Guatemala. I remember there being a video cafe where we watched 'Life of Brian' on our return to Panajachel. Happy Travels...
Well, thanks for taking me there. I did other solo volcano hikes, but this one I skipped out of fear, which I am still sad about, since it looks like a nice challenge and a good workout with great view as a reward on the top.

I did it unguided, one year ago at mid day! there were no police patrols as yet on the trail like there apparently is now...I remember burying my phone and keys about 2500meters up. there is that one famous story by the locals about a tourist being attacked with a machete at the top! They say the thieves come from Santiago and wait at the top, on weekends, at sunrise mostly. I hope to do Volcan Atitlan this year.
That was a good idea on hiding your stuff half way! Atitlán felt a lot more intimidating since it was just us and the farmers, and the day is a lot longer... I have a video on Atitlan on the channel, feel free to have a look and best of luck! 👌🏼
The attire isn't really traditional as when the Celtiberians arrived the tribes had no ethnic dress. The Spanish colonists imposed such dress as a means to keep them un uniform. The action gave the Spanish a means to identify the tribes and take reprisals against them. The Maya had been extinct for 900 years prior to the Celtiberian conquest of Goathemalha(the name translated from Pocomam to Aragonés language).
