      sparrowJLT hero characters give the ship +500% to shields and weapon damage.
      Seriously though, I always felt that DS9 should have had a couple specifically outfitted for defensive combat operations, with the extra room taken up by power generation, shields and weapon systems. Of course I’ve long wanted to see a real”fighter” being used by one race or another. Basically a shuttle sized vessel, but as above, outfit very utilitarian, basically room for the crew, life support, maybe a replicator for longer missions, but other than that, every ounce, and, inch of the ship used for power generation, engines, weapons and shields. Yes, I know Star fleet isn’t a military organization, but it’s constantly faced with hostile actions by other races, and has countless outposts and stations in very dangerous areas, so I’d expect them to have some sort of small ships designed specifically defend these locations, although I guess the lack of adequate defensive systems is why every outpost seems be be destroyed within seconds, often before even a distress call is finished being sent.
      When runabouts first appeared on DS9, I always felt the writers of TNG missed an opportunity, as they could have been introduced as part of a courier/transportation fleet. No need to pull a starship from it’s assigned duties to transport an admiral, or new crew members, to a patrolling starship, when they can often be transported by runabout. Of course the ones for admirals and diplomats would have pimped out, and luxurious versions, basically space limos, no need for a wet bar as they come standard with a replicator, but can they stretch runabouts.🤣

    The Runabout is hands down my favorite ship in the entire Trek universe. It really speaks to my urge to be a space hobo/drifter/tourist. Install a small one person holodeck and a black market cloaking device along with a large replicator/transporter and cozy crew quarters with a hot tub, an autodoc and I'd be in heaven. Edit: forgot to add a substantial LCARS library with a few million movies, music, books, holo adventures, etc. Also holo emitters throughout the ship in case I get lonely so I can have an AI holographic companion.

    As more "production" side of things, the Danube always had a well made and sensible set, which translated well to the screen. Some of the other sets on star trek always had a problem with a sense of scale, I feel like the Runabouts always "Felt" the size they looked on the TV screen.

      It was due to the back set being constructed separately, in the standing set room for the day. You'll notice the bunks were used in the Defiant quarters right after. Either alien locales used up the space in other episodes, or then later they'd have to tear up the Defiant quarters if they wanted to recreate the back.

      Apparently after DS9 and the TNG movies finished, the canon (?) lore had Starfleet going to a new design paradigm with blended nacelles on the main body and combined primary/secondary hulls. They didn't have to worry about appealing to the casual viewer with a "classic trek" looking ship design.
      The in universe explanation was that the Defiants success meant they rewrote the rulebook on Starfleet ships, which can be seen with the Defiants shuttle pod type10 the _Chaffee_ as well, that have armored nacelles in a similar layout to the Defiant.
      And I read somewhere that they were even going with internal bridges on later ships that were scaled up Defiant style builds for the lore.
      This is seen somewhat with new anti Borg vessels introduced in First Contact such as the Saber, Steamrunner, Norway and Akira, that leave the Saucer, secondary hull and nacelles on pylons aesthetic behind, so as to not be confused with the new Sovereign class Enterprise debuting onscreen.
      But then Star Trek online appeared and went with a lazy jazzed up version of classic ships for their inventory, so the new paradigm gradually faded away, especially as the reboot dragged everything back to the original layout.
      We can only hope that the new Picard series continues and expands the new look, as it would be a interesting way to suggest that the Federation has changed a lot because of the Dominion war, and is not the optimistic Federation of old.

      In cannon you have had the T'Kumbra, captained by Solok Sisko's Newman, and various other ships with a T' name that would be Vulcan. There are other non human sounding starship names mentioned. Especially during DS9 when they are said to be docked at the station (although mostly it's the same few establishing shits of a Nebula class)
      Given Sisko seems to be the one naming the ships were there a non human station commander then they would probably go with a non Terran name.

    Ever since I saw the episode of star trek the next generation with moriarty where they trick him into a holographic shuttle craft I've always thought about how cool it would be to have one of these little runabouts and to just travel the galaxy.

    I always pictured myself traveling the galaxy on this cozy little ship. Looking back, that would have been a terrible claustrophobic idea. I need a Galaxy class with a fully functional holodeck to travel space.

    considering these things have their own registry you have to imagine their is a small fleet of these moving about federation space acting as couriers, sensitive cargo haulers, and passenger ferriers for crew transfers and VIPs. With an official crew of like 4 captained* by a lt comm at best, kind of imagine it being a mix of firefly and star trek in temperment.

    I love the Danube, has the versatility of a Starship at such a manageable scale! I always liked how completely tangible they were too, Unlike the massive starships, or even The 50-Crew-capacity Defiant, which was much smaller than the other mainline ships, thr Danube with a crew minimum of around 2 and even 1 if needed was just so much cooler as a full on starship.

    One thing I always wondered about when I first saw the Danube Class Runabouts on Star Trek Deep Space Nine and that is who came up with these type 12 shuttlecraft sized starships for the show.

    I always said the Rio Grande was the real hero ship of DS9. It it survived the first few seasons, the whole Dominion War and the later follow up books. It out lived all the other runabouts hundreds of "real" starships and the original Defiant. Who your hero now?

    I'd love to have one....always thought the Danube runabout was my ideal personal ship(other than a YT-1300 Corellian light freighter *cough cough*) but the only thing that bothers me is having to land on the warp nacelles...just seems like a bad idea, especially if you're in a situation that calls for a rough landing...I'd modify it with some kind of landing gear underneath....maybe even tracks so i can roll around without taking off-it could have some tactical usefulness-say changing location when some kind of severe ion storm or anomaly makes flying a bad idea...or if the impulse is having issues, or just to keep it nice & close to the ground while i use it as a light mining vessel.
    Thoughts?

    • @zafranorbian757
      @zafranorbian757 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only times were landing on the nacells would be a problem would be a crash landing, in that vase a landing gear would not help you. And why use a maintnace heavy track system when you can just hover 10cm above the ground with barely any energy usage.

    • @chrismc410
      @chrismc410 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My ideal ship is the classic B'rel-class Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Needs only a handful of officers and men to optimally run it, very well armed with disruptor cannons and a torpedo launcher, some variants equipped with phaser beam emplacements and an aft torpedo launcher in addition to the standard armament as well. Capable of both space and atmospheric flight, as fast as some larger, more powerful ships, of course the cloaking device, a bit more useful overall than the YT-1300

  • @JustTooDamnHonest

    Yeah and this runabout had the best thing of all and that is plot armor. Yes there was several episodes in DS9 where it should've been destroyed but they were always saved by another ship or some science BS.

    I always wondered where the line between runabout and shuttlecraft is drawn. I know shuttles are more point A to B vessels and shorter range, but sometimes shuttles seem more runabout like. (Delta Flyer comes to mind as an example).

    It's a pity we never saw these ships in the massive space battles of DS9. I don't recall if Federation fighters were warp-capable. But if not, runabouts' warp drive would enable strike-craft to keep up with the capital ships, without waiting to be docked in launch-bays.

    While the Danube is a nice ship, i get the impression it sacrifices strength for versatility.
    It´s modular compartments allow is a great deal of tactical AND functional flexibility, but it is inferior in pretty much all other aspects to the, 5 meter shorter, Sacagawea class scout ship.
    To be fair, the Sacagawea is a dedicated scout ship, while the Danube seems a utility vessel more than anything else. Danube can to light supply transport as well as farry people in surprisingly high number AND comfort, given the right compartments. The Sacagawea scout fits merely two crewmen, but it´s weapon systems are full spaceship grade.
