Starfleet's Borg Response Escort! - Saber-class - Star Trek Starships Explained

  • One of a handful of Star Trek Starship designs built specifically for combat, thus not needing to be very big, so that focus could be put into speed, manoeuvrability and tactical-based systems. This Is The SABER-Class!
    We’ve covered it with some detail in the Borg Busters video, currently our 3rd most popular video, but we’re here today to expound on the capabilities and uses of one tough little ship that saw action at The Battle of Sector 001, extensive battles during the Dominion War, and now on display at the fleet museum Athan or Anthan Prim

    Love this ship. You literally can have about (10) Saber-Classes, (10) Defiant classes, (2) intrepid classes , and (2) Akira classes and that would be one badass and effective assault fleet in the Dominion War

    • @Anton3055
      @Anton3055 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I'd replace the Intrepid with the Steamrunner, Intrepid is more of a multirole/exploration ship, designed to survive long term. Steamrunner is more of a warship.

    • @TeraQuad
      @TeraQuad 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Anton3055 That is why I kept them. The multi-role/exploration (scanners/sensors) to coordinate with the Sabers suite to give that multi-data/multi-sensor tracking and targeting, but also fast and agile (which is why I would not use a Nebula class) I relegated the Akira to the torpedo gunboat/carrier warship (tank) role. I think this would be way more effective (build time, personnel, firepower, resources, etc.) than say (3) Galaxy class.

      I always thought these straight up warships should have regularly been assigned to various starbases/outposts, much as the Defiant was assigned to DS9. The idea being they weren’t always needed, and when needed they would be mainly staffed by the base’s/outpost’s crew, although each would have a small full time crew to keep the vessels combat ready. Theship class assigned being based of outpost/starbase size, with smallish outposts having a defiant class assigned, with larger outposts/bases being assigned larger and possibly even multiple ships

    The Saber classes are definitely an interesting design. By the way for R2 appearing in a Star Trek film it would be Star Trek Into Darkness and when the Vengeance catches up with the Enterprise while at warp and fires on it. When it creates its first hull breach that's when you see R2 flying out. Of course you can miss it if you blink literally.

    Didn't the Saber class have the option of a long range *phaser lance* installed above the front shuttle bay?
    The in universe explanation is the Federation council thought it was too warlike so Starfleet engineers removed it on most of the main production run but left the hardware intact to have it quickly retrofitted.

    As a vessel made for a similar purpose but of a larger construction as the Defiant class, one would assume that the Saber class would have some kind of increased increased capacity in relation to the Defiant class. This could be in the overall amount of weapons, having better crew and storage facilities (for better range) or defensive systems for increased durability.
    It doesn't seam to have the missile type focus of the Steamrunner class or the 'build it small, and deadly with the maximum firepower and small crew' emphasis of the Defiant class. Instead it seems to be by far lighter armed (4 phaser emitters and 2 photon torpedo launchers) than the Defiant (4 phaser cannons, 3 phaser emitters and 6 torpedo launchers). In fact the only extra capabilities I can see in the Saber class over the Defiant class is that the Saber carries two shuttle craft (only 1 on the Defiant class).
    With a larger size making it easier to target than a Defiant and both ships having the same crew compliment I can't see any reason why Starfleet would build a Saber class over a Defiant class other than cost. I could see that with its dense design it would probably take longer to construct a Defiant class than a Saber class as well as fitting all those weapon systems has to be resource intensive. This means (at least as far as I can tell) the Saber has to be a 'budget version' of the Defiant class that is probably more easily put into mass production in order to make any sense at all.

      There's no way it's easier to build. It has a cloaking device and it's hull structure barely handles the weapons load (per dialogue in the show).
      The Sabre makes more sense by having a slightly less impressive load but a larger hull mass, allowing for a less overly compact and thus, complex construction.
      I build aircraft in real life. Combat aircraft. Smaller + more complex and stealth equals 2x more difficult than legacy platforms.

    Too bad we couldn't rip the LCARS Utopia Planetia FLASH website when this was initially introduced in the late 90s. The flash website had been very interactive&the display is similar to the current Marmot 3d viewer. The original prototype had gone rogue to prove SFC how tough the small little ship as the project's difficulties similar to the Defiant was going to shut it down. Just like the Defiant being mothballed due to its overpowered warp core being difficult to operate, the crew&engineers stole it and having the local defense ships chase and shoot it down. It survived&was mass produced.

    in truth i don't like the "labling" of these ships..
    they list Defiant as an escort. its not, its a Corvette. Same size as an escort but much more firepower, and more geared for offensive then slower escorts.
    That would make the Sabre a Destroyer... small, maneuverable but punching well above its weight class in for short duration. Can act as an escort, rapid response, screen, or in a group on its own as a destroyer fleet.
    Steamrunner they call a Heavy Frigate, but Frigate doesn't fit its roll again, its a Light or Scout cruiser. (heavy frigates are "slow escorts with lots of firepower" defensive ships. Same roll as the Heavy/Destroyer Leader class, except most nations just folded those into the Light Cruiser classes.
    Norway they call a medium cruiser... nope, light cruiser...
    And Akira being cruiser or heavy cruiser. thats the only one i agree with.
    Now this being said, they could have miss named them on purpose for PR reasons.
    Much like Japans Izumo-class destroyer - DDH-183, its a destroyer, really it is... at 26,000 tons, carrying 9 Helicopters and 12 F-35's. Its just a normal destroyer..
    Or UK's Invincible-class Cruisers. 12 harriers, 10 helicopters. again, its a threw the deck cruiser, who's main armament is carried below decks and carried through it... on elevators.
    countries often "mis lable" ship classes to hide their true purpose while being built form the government/people.

Star Fleet's secret weakness... officers have no leg strength, can't walk very far down corridors or climb a ladder to anything more than one deck. They receive extra training to be able to use monumental stairways during away missions to avoid revealing the weak leg secret.

    I am happily disagreeing with you, Captain Jack. The engines are built SOOO far away from the main hull, that they definitely ARE considered a weakness! The engines are right out there, literally screaming “Here, hit me! I’m an easy target, because some stupid idiot designed my engines to be easily blown apart, because they’re so pronounced & not protected AT ALL by ANY-THING!” I’d never serve on one of these ships, because I feel with the engines so easy to be targeted by enemy vessels, the ENTIRE ship is considered a death trap. Give me a Defiant Class any day. I mean…what were they thinking allowing this horrible design to be brought into producing?? I don’t even feel sorry for the ship design team. When they can make better ships, come talk to me. Until then, I’ll just sit out this one…
