Critics had a sort of vendetta against mccartney during this time because he was perceived as the one responsible for the beatles breakup, so this album was slammed, but in recent years has received the acclaim it deserved as probably the father of lo fi music

His first album was more low fidelity. This one has some more raw songs, but the production is quite big in some of it really.

    • @debjorgo
      @debjorgo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@starrynight1657 The first album, McCartney, sounded just like Let it Be was supposed to sound. Acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bass, piano/organ, drums,... none of the slick production that George Martin had been putting on the Beatles' albums, songs they could perform live.

@@starrynight1657 agreed. that’s the thing about “lowfi” it very often is not low fidelity in production but instead style. It’s comprehensive arrangements are intentionally produced (often relying on it) to sound textured or old for the lack of a better word. Some indie-lowfi music is absolutely hyper production oriented and has a fuck ton going on behind the scenes than the name let’s on. People seem to think lowfi music means raw, as in little done to alter how the arrangement would sound played live but it honestly couldn’t be farther from the truth imo. Especially when it comes to the vocals. Baked in reverb, saturation, and distortion.

This is better than several Beatles albums in my opinion. Critics were blinded by the Beatles breakup and ignored the music or unfairly critiqued it, while in the back of their minds I'm sure they quite enjoyed it.
The Back Seat of My Car is my favorite by far. You should definitely go back to that one a few times; it will absolutely grow on you, which it did me. That one part at the end where he screams "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" is the equivalent of an orgasm in musical terms! Another song that'll do that to you is "The Pound Is Sinking" from the Tug of War album. Those of you reading this comment that like that song...you know which part I'm talking about..."Oh it didn't happen......no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your heart just wasn't in it anymore!!!"

It's not really a collaboration with Linda. Paul was still bound to the Beatles agreements so he credited his wife as co-author so to make a 'new' araganement that was not affected by any claims by the Beatles
Shortly after he would also stop his music being on Apple

Sorry you're butthurt about "Monkberry Moon Delight", a song that always divided fans, and "Apple Jam" which virtually no one played. The late 60s and 70s were filled with amazing long jams, from Zappa to Santana, from the Who to the Allmans to the Dead to Led Zep to King Crimson to the James Gang, etc etc......"Apple Jam" from "All Things Must Pass" is absolutely not top caliber jamming (which was never George's strong suit). And not particularly well-recorded, sorry Phil Spector, but recording improvisational jamming was never his strong suit, either. PS: Ha, no not rich. I just know more about the Beatles than you do.

Ironic. Coming from the guy who showed some praise on Two Virgins weeks ago.
But yeah, I must agree on some things. While the Apple Jam is not a bad thing to listen to, I don’t get the point of seeing Jesse reacting to these since the most interesting things from ATMP are on the first 2 discs. Thankfully, he didn’t do John and Yoko’s Wedding Album either, which is boring as hell.

Rolling Stone magazine had a close relationship with John at this time. So, they slammed everything McCartney, to stay on John's good side. At the time, many magazines followed Rolling Stones lead because they thought RS had their ear to the pulse of the younger generation. Paul's digs at John or the other Beatles were vailed. John's How Do You Sleep attack left no doubt who it was about. Unfortunately, the only thing this back and forth did was divide fans. Suddenly, picking your favorite Beatle meant having to dislike the other.
All Things Must Pass is really George's first solo album. The two experimental albums before it was about like John's Unfinished Music series. All Things Must Pass is George's best (imo).

Excellent reaction video! I love McCartney's Ram album, and think there's creativity just bursting out everywhere on it. Jann Wenner who was the co-founder and publisher of Rolling Stone magazine was a very good friend of John Lennon, and so instantly took sides when The Beatles split, and was determined to do anything he could to ruin McCartney's post-Beatles solo career. With Rolling Stone being such an influential magazine at the time, and with Wenner being so powerful in the music magazine world, most of the music critics elsewhere fell in line. The majority of the fans, however, loved it. And over time Ram has begun to earn the respect it always deserved.
I'm not taking sides, as I love the music of both Lennon and McCartney, but I do find myself much more able to relisten to Ram (and McCartney's albums in general) than any of Lennon's solo work, mostly because too much Lennon leaves me feeling depressed, with it being so introspective and melancholic much of the the time. And having Yoko screaming on some of them doesn't help. I much prefer select Lennon tracks on a playlist than to listen to his many of his albums in their entirety.

Yoko DID take John's lucky break and break it in two. That makes a lot of sense. And it wasn't just John who it affected. It affected Paul's lucky break as well, and he had every right to be writing about it, as all the Beatles used their personal experiences as material. John and Paul were going to be writers together like Rogers and Hammerstein or other great duos. Just because you fall in love with someone doesn't mean you have to drop your own career or bring them to work with you. John was just pathetic how he thought everything Paul wrote was about him though. Like Hey Jude. You have found her now go and get her obviously referred to Linda, who Paul had finally hooked up with in spring. The song came out in summer and he asked Linda to come and live with him in London by the fall. It was about Paul and Linda! But John thought it was a "message" to him to go to Yoko lol.

Loved your reaction! I love when you have an epiphany about something! I know I sound like a broken record but critics at that time were friends and fans of John! Despite John officially quitting the group, Paul was the one who announced the breakup. He was sad and hurt he was having to fight the other 3 to fend off scam artist, Allen Klein, and needed to make it official. So critics bashed Paul and they all let him take the fall for the breakup. It’s such a sad story, really. They all made amends eventually and John later owned up to treating Paul like shit and making a mistake about Klein. “I pushed Paul too far.” I recommend watching the “Understanding Lennon/McCartney” series on TH-cam. It dives into all of it. They take a slight “John was in love with Paul” approach (as many believe) but it’s all told through their own words in interviews (video, audio and magazines.) Fortunately, with the animosity gone, Paul’s albums and innovation have gotten the credit they deserve. 💙

The RAM album I have I bought at a yard sale.... for a dime! I told the young woman how much the vinyl album with the Apple label was worth and I was willing to pay more, but she just wanted the dime. I also purchased McCartney 2 in a store, brought it home and discovered there was a mix up at the record plant. My vinyl album has a Gladys Knight and the Pips label on both sides, but it is McCartney 2. As to Ram, Uncle Albert is the only song I likede, although it is a tad too long.

Loved the reaction, Jesse - I knew you would enjoy it. Of course, as a 12 year old first listening to it we didn’t try to analyze the lyrics, we just sang along and enjoyed.
I feel like “Another Day” really belonged on his first solo album; it fits in well with the rest of it. Maybe it just wasn’t ready so they released it separately.
