    I was 16 when this album hit. In Buffalo New York, “Head” was THE dance floor burner. We loved it BECAUSE it was absolutely dirty!!!🤣🤣

    Great reaction and review!!! This is when people really started to notice him and his talent! I have been doing my own Prince journey through his music and have loved every second. So excited to see you go through the same journey!! Can't wait for more!!

    In Head, he’s interacting with a woman. He uses the word “Head” for going down on her and her going down on him. Him using the masculine slang is a perfect example of how he blurred lines of sexuality even in discussing a heterosexual interaction.

    Nice review. Controversy the next album is when PRINCE is fine tuned and ready to explode on to the scene with 1999 and Purple Rain.

    In "Head" he's talking about giving the bride head and her reciprocating. Also some of the song is from the bride's perspective. Prince was not bi but based off interviews he comes off as possibly non binary. In an interview he said he felt like there was another person inside of him, probably a woman. The time stamp for that interview is 25:33 m.th-cam.com/video/Sx5N4pMIbVI/w-d-xo.html. But he overall just stands for going against societal norms and believes in self expression with sexuality. For "Sister" when i first heard it I hadda stop the song so quick and look into the lyrics and all that 😭. If you read the lyrics like "I was only 16 and only half a man/My sister didn't give a goddamn" and "Don't put me on the street again/Oh, sister/I just want to be your friend" it's kinda clear that his sister r worded him at a young age and threatened to kick him out. A very messed up situation, i personally dont go back to the song as well. Sadly, it actually lines up with his life bc at 16 he was living with his half sister at the time 😕. People say the song is for shock value but he claims that he's all genuine with the lyrics so take it as you will.

    Prince was basically a semi famous but controversial figure among black Funk and R&B audiences with a reputation as a great live performer at the time of Dirty Mind's release. Its not until 1999 album that he made a successful crossover among white rock audiences. 1999 was his first massively successful album that turned him into a star and paved the way for his dazzling success with Purple Rain. His next album Controversy see's him on the very cusp of superstardom and is much more political than Dirty Mind, a real step up in his songwriting abilities.

    Early 80s were the beginning of the Punk mouvment, mostly in England, Germany and France. This Album and the next one Controversy had some Punk vibes. It's a very european thing, so don't expect american R&B/Funk lovers to get it. Dirty Mind is a true masterpiece. Even know Prince had a very poor budget to produce it, He still made THAT.

      Yep, Prince's "Rude Boy" badge on the cover of "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" album was a tribute to The Clash and the Ska rebirth. With "Annie Christian", Prince even matched the European Cold Wave era. This cat was really unique.

    I've never understood the hype for this album, although it is still a great album I find lots of his other ones including his self titled Prince album to be better. Not saying I don't like Dirty mind tho it's still great

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This album matched perfectly what was going on with the European new wave and punk musical scene of the late 70's/early 80's, that's also why bands like Devo, Talking Heads and even Stray Cats were more popular in Europe than in the US in this era.

    I really like the songs on this album, however I don't like its very cold and raw production with a sound that draws too much on the mids and highs (from my point of view, it lacks bass frequencies). I find that even Prince's vocals aren't pleasant at times, but that's probably due to this drier production favoring mids and highs. Personally, I prefer the muffled sound of the first two albums, especially the second Prince from 1979, which I found quite to my liking (probably also due to the fact that I had discovered Prince with "Sexy Dancer" & Co. and that I remain deeply attached to it).

    • @jordashi
      @jordashi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's the point of the album, by the time Prince got to Dirty Mind, he had already blew threw most of his advance money so he had to record the album pretty cheaply. The result is the masterclass album of "when you have lemons you make lemonade", Dirty Mind wouldn't really work if it's production wasn't so raw, I believe the album wasn't even mastered, chances are it was only mixed but all in all that's what makes the album great.

    • @a.k.1740
      @a.k.1740 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jordashi I understand that the do-it-yourself aspect and the homemade production is well suited to the tracks, however I can't help but prefer the more luxurious production of the 1979 Prince album (and to a lesser extent of For You). I'm also more attached to the more classic r&b/funk tracks from the first two albums that have a foothold in the 70s. I also find that some keyboard sounds on the Dirty Mind album sound quite ugly and unpleasant at times and sound quite gimmicky. we also find this sound on the very first eponymous album of The Time in 1981.

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@a.k.1740 He was more into new wave and punk during this time... different strokes for different folks. And the harsh synths sounds of "Dirty Mind" are what lead a new audience (especially in Europe) into Prince. But you can't deny the funk of "Head" or "Cool". BTW, if you want to experience these albums properly, I recommend you to listen to the original vinyl editions of "Dirty Mind" and "The Time" on a good turntable, amplifier and loudspeaker (or a studio AKG or Beyerdynamic headphones) system. What saves the production is the Bernie Grundman (more exigent than previous Howie Weinberg, tho) mastering, but it requires more than a middle-of-the road HiFi system.

    • @a.k.1740
      @a.k.1740 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chucku00 I had the original vinyls when they came out (I've known Prince since 1979) so I know very well how they sounded but I never liked the sound of Dirty Mind and The Time's debut album I find too focused on the mediums.

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@a.k.1740 That's why equalizers were really common in the 80's, it allows you to adjust precisly the audio spectrum to the equiment and room you're listening. But I agree Prince sound engineers weren't as good as Susan Rogers for these two albums.

    "ah sister, don't put me on the streets again, ah sister i just wanna be your friend" this is a sad track because it expresses Prince being sexually abused by his older sister at a young age. IF he didn't do it, she would kick him out the house at night. It's ironic how people never pay attention, if this was a woman, they would say "this is horrible" Prince ran away from home as a kid a lot too. This is a venting song. There were so many people of that generation, that weren't listening to Prince truly in that song. I think in 2022, Prince would've been heard louder.
