      No as you clutch would always be engaged. The bike would be in rideable really

    I have ride my Harley nearly 70000 km with this phenomena. The clunk is always there, but have never ever had any problem. Have check the clutch mechanism every mantainance period. Nothing wrong has been detected. One thing I have done is to put more tension on the clutch cable. After that I could engage the gears much easier and specially the neutral. On this new bike I have, the neutral was impossible to engage when stopping or starting. I did the opposite what Harley recommended. I put a spacer between the cable and the clutch handlebar. I checked the adjustment first and that was correct.

    So glad to hear your review on this issue. Had a test ride , before buying my 2020 Sport Glide loved everything about it , but the only thing I mentioned to the dealer was the clanking of the gears . Is respond was maybe incorrect revs when changing gears .I’ve come to the conclusion that the clanking when changing gear is just the way they are .I don’t have any problems changing gears , just the clanking more in 1,2,3 not so much in the other gears .It would be great to hear a sound clip of you changing gears to compare it. Your videos as always very helpful. Cheers.

      My 2020 Ultra is very loud compared to my 2012 Heritage. Only 700m on the Ultra but 1-3 are noisy and neutral a bitch to get into. Wondering if it will calm down with miles or needs different oil...?? No problem shifting, just loud. The Heritage clunks, the Ultra clanks.

    Hi, I only been riding 4 yrs & now have my 1st Harley. Heritage 114. Screaming Eagle slip on’s (that’s all the psycho state of NY allows).
    75 miles on the bike only but I feel like the tranny, or whatever, is louder than the pipes, which I don’t like. No “rumble” sound to be heard.
    Don’t know what to do? Maybe put better pipes & just change before inspection. Anyway, glad I found your channel.

    Alf,
    All good info and, as always much appreciated.
    It's come to me recently. that one indication of a clutch needing adjustment: with the bike in gear and the clutch lever pulled completely in, can you (or is it difficult) easily move your bike backwards? I usually check this while sitting astride and "duck-walking" the bike backwards.
    Thank-You,
    Mike

      Ah yes. Yep any resistance or if your bike want to move when in neutral then it prob needs adjusting too. Cheers

    I have a switchback 2012 bought recently. I notice that first gear has a heavy drop and clunk which is pretty loud. No issues with other gears. You have cleared up a few things for me, thanks

      mine also. 2014 elec. glide TK. Loud 1st gear clunk. The clutch is heavy duty and doesn't fully release. When I start the engine in 1st gear clutch depressed the bike lurches forward a bit. Hydraulic clutch, heavy spring on the clutch pack. I'm going to try CVT tranny oil in the primary. Someone said it helps lube the clutch plates better. No problem with grab as is. Grabs to good.

    I have a 2019 Harley FXDR first ever bike and first time riding . Is it a such thing as not fully engaged into a gear, after shifting ? My bike dropped to a lower gear while riding , I thought maybe I didn’t put it fully into the next gear.what could be the reason for this?

    Since new ive had a big clunk going into 1st but only when stone cold - once it’s warmed up or allowed to run for a few mins it diminishes presuming it’s oil related till fully circulated

    • @RevelatorAlf
      @RevelatorAlf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually mine is the opposite. When cold it’s like butter but heated up it get clunky. Go figure

      Actually Alf my 2020 Low Rider does something similar when I first ride it no clunk then it clunks when it warms up…any thoughts

    hmm! was coming home on my 98 softail today and noticed the gears were clunking louder than normal up or down the spectrum. no problem engaging, just a loud clunk everytime.

    Hey Alf, I'm having trouble finding neutral on my sport glide. It's just hard to get into it. Is that normal for a harley?

    • @RevelatorAlf
      @RevelatorAlf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Todd yes it’s a common issue. Is you bike before it’s first service? As it’s usually worse then. You may need to ensure you’re pulling in the clutch the whole way or make a clutch adjustment. After 1K miles and after first oil changes, it tends to loosen up. If not then look at clutch adjustment for sure. Cheers

    I’m having an issue at the moment when downshifting through gears the lever will sometimes push down but won’t make a click and won’t engage a gear until I push down again and this can happen in any gear

    • @RevelatorAlf
      @RevelatorAlf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm how many miles has your bike got? Clutch adjustment could be a factor too. Have you tried purposely pulling the clutch all the way in before changing down to see if that makes a difference. Also what oil are you using as that can sometimes have a minor affect too?
      Cheers

      RevelatorAlf it’s a brand new bike only picked up 2 weeks ago I’ve made sure clutch is pulled all the way in when changing heading down dealership today see if they can work it out

    My brand new triumph bobber black 2020 sounds like a slug hammer hitting the transmission casing when i put it in first. 50kms on it and they charged me $27.00 to tell me thats a normal sound.......its more like an un-refined motor/ transmission. A transmission from the early 50s more like.

    All motorcycle transmissions pretty much operate the same way.
    But no other manufacturer would settle for one that is machined so poorly and shifts so badly.
