Role of business? Producing goods and services that meet customers needs, not wet-nursing people according to the nostrums of the hubristic and narcissistic rich and powerful.

I disagree with Porter on this issue 100%. Being decent to everyone is a given and it need not go a single step beyond decent; not causing damage to the environment (basic Hippocratic Oath), providing a decent product, being decent to your employees. That’s IT. Leave the rest of this to religion, parents, and law enforcement (where laws are clearly broken). Save your political activism for your personal life. Business owners, do not buy into this bs for one second. Just do no harm and make a good product. Build your business ethically and with a focus on profit and forget the rest. Porter is an excellent strategist, but sucks as a preacher of ethics.

A focus on profit is another way of prioritising self gain above a social environment. Moral ethics has to be the first foundation to begin an entity on (conscious living and institutional entities). A business constitutes of multiple parties not just 1 person; therefore the needs and wellfare of all is crucial to all concerned which means businesses are to operate in a socially viable manner. Yes profit is vital but not more so than the wellfare of all stakeholders (owner's, employee's, Supplier's, Community's, etc) involved. Michael E Poter has valuable ideas some may appreciate his ideas and others may not. You are free to disagree. At least explain in detail declaring your reason for disagreeing.

How has profit oriented benefited our planet and its inhabitants?
Today popular businesses incorporate planned obsolescence in their products and services (take Apple inc adding a feature that slows down past model mobile devices) all to encourage sales of newer model products to inflate profit, in the long run we destroy ourselves, actually we are destroying ourselves gradually soo gradual we don't detect it.
