CKND always signed off with O Canada-God Save The Queen on Sunday nights when they were doing transmitter maintenance.

    4:32 O Canada!
    Terre de nos aïeux,
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
    From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

For this particular station they used both "God Save the Queen" as well as "O Canada", beginning approximately at the 3:36 mark of the clip

3:35 Royal Anthem - God Save the Queen
    4:33 National Anthem - O Canada

Cool! BTW, the music and lyrics of "O Canada" were written two centuries after those of "God Save the Queen," yet written nearly a half-century after Samuel Francis Smith wrote the lyrics to "America," which was set to the German adaptation of "God Save the Queen." "O Canada" became the national anthem of Canada on Canada Day 1980 (then known as Dominion Day), nearly a half-century after "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the national anthem of the United States of America.

Also . . . I'd put in 'Philips PM5544' as a tag, given its appearance at the end of this clip (I see that its dimensions for NTSC use differs from those for PAL and SECAM).

I don't understand the jargon, but I've always liked hearing larger stations like CKY from Winnipeg, but covering the province of Manitoba, rattling off all those transmitter details. And I remember that old footage used with "God Save The Queen".

@NEPatriot - Actually, that TP was used by Channel 5 from within its last years as Metromedia's WNEW-TV. I actually saw a picture of this TP where on the top was "WNEW-TV," and on the bottom "MMI 5 NYC." Apparently, the signal that elicited the PM5544 originated from its World Trade Center transmitter.

Can you direct me to said picture? I've seen the WNYW version on here of course, never the WNEW one.

@caa1000 - "O Canada" is set to the music of "God Save the Queen," I.I.N.M.

@wmbrown6 You are mistaken. God Save the Queen uses the same tune that Americans sing as "My Country Tis of Thee"

It's just been announced that one of those rebroadcaster stations mentioned (CKYS in Snow Lake) is being shut down. Bell Media cites that most if not all viewers in the community are watching on cable or satellite and the over-the-air tower has virtually no viewers and is unprofitable.

The infamous "Dirty Harry" Callahan, a 92-CITI-FM staffer voiced the sign-on/sign-off video. Ray Torgrud had retired a few months before.

@brithgob - a.k.a. "America." But the other thing was, Canada was also for many years a part of the Commonwealth of Great Britain, which might explain some Canadian TV stations' use of "God Save the Queen" along with "O Canada."

  • @robatsea2009
    @robatsea2009  13 ปีที่แล้ว

@caa1000 There was nothing ever mandated to this that I'm aware of. A few channels would air "God Save The Queen", as the Queen is Canada's Monarch - but the majority of channels simply went with "O Canada"

@wmbrown6 Sort of like WNYW-5's TP from about 1987.
