Bobby Lee was a gentleman and a tactful public figure. Knit-picking quotes without reading his letters gives one the impression that Lee was an abolitionist who was forced into an awkward situation to pick between Virginia, the Union and the South. Not a complex, intelligent person who also became an ardent Confederate who did his very best to preserve slavery, secede from the Union and also harbored plenty of resentment towards the North.
@@Erni77 no. Popular culture and mythology has been unjustly cruel and overly kind to the memory of Grant and Lee, respectively. But what Grant fought for remains. The Union remains, chattel slavery is no more and the Klan is pretty much dead.

It wasn't a War about Slavery, the South wanted the USA to continue as a union of individual states with a great degree of autonomy instead of becoming a more centralised/federalised nation where things were imposed upon them. Slavery would've ended in the south regardless of the War's outcome.
