When it comes to singers like Joe Cocker and Janis Joplin, it's not about technical correctness. It's about raw emotion! That's what they bring to the table and that's what connects with the listener. To me, they are two of the goats. Very few people give you the feels like that every time they sing.

You are right. It was perfect! He put his soul in every song.He should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!

What makes this even more beautiful to me is the fact that Billy Preston wrote it as a tribute to his mother.

When I heard his voice crack at the end, I felt like he loved her so much, and he thought she was so beautiful that he was in tears.

PERFECTION. Anyone who sings that last note with technical precision doesn't understand the song.

Only he could sing this song, no one else is capable. "Feeling Alright" next, "Up Where We Belong" (a duet) and my favorite "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"! Bless his heart, he was a giant.

I was so relieved when he sang those last two words and you got it. Even though I never had any of his albums I always loved his voice. This song is so amazing. I feel protective of Joe when I see someone from a different generation react to him, especially in his more imperfect and vulnerable moments. I love that you love him as much as we do.

Thank you for pointing out the "perfect" imperfections in Joe's voice. This song's ending is like an emotional heartbreak. Totally real, totally human. For live stuff, check out Joe with the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" Tour. 1970-71 madness, full band and backup singers. Try "Feelin Alright" and "Delta Lady".
Now, when will you get back to The Who, Cream, Jimi Hendrix!?!? You only need "three songs to be a Fan".

Joe is perfectly Joe. No improvements needed. You REALLY need to see him perform live for more of these songs. Right until the end. He never lost his talent. Nothing but emotions for all his songs. So glad I was able to see him in concert way back in 1978. I've been watching his concert from Germany on TH-cam. Amazing
    Love you Joe. Never forgotten.

The thing about Joe Cocker is that he CAN sing the music technically ‘correct’. The imperfections you are hearing are purposefully done. The man was a Picasso with his voice.

African American musician/singer Billy Preston, who played with Little Richard, Ray Charles AND the Beatles, wrote this. And yes back in the day in 1975, we thought the end vocal part was awful. But hey, it was Joe!! "Real music is not perfect" is so true, which is why we back in the day didn't need auto tune and any of that B.S. In the 1970's auto tune meant you were getting your car tuned up lol.

Joe Cocker was not a great technical singer, but he sang with a lot of emotional authenticity. His singing never came across as bogus or fake. It was always real.
In 1982, Joe Cocker teamed up with Jennifer Warnes to record the love ballad, “Up Where We Belong”, for the soundtrack for the 1982 film, “An Officer And A Gentleman” (which starred Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett, Jr.). The song won a Grammy Award for “Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals”, and the songwriters won the Golden Globe and Academy Award for “Best Song”.
You might want to react to the song/music video.

Joe had another great love song, from the movie An Officer & A Gentleman called "Up Where We Belong" sung with Jennifer Warnes th-cam.com/video/bjrOcrisGyI/w-d-xo.html . I highly recommend that and also live, "You Can Leave Your Hat On. I was fortunate to see Joe several times in the late 60's and early 70's. Always a fantastic show!

A live version of "Up Where We Belong" Jennifer Warnes deserves more credit than she ever received. She wrote songs and another major duet she was part of was "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" with Bill Medley of the Rightous Brothers, featured in the movie Dirty Dancing. th-cam.com/video/kpYxZ-1PnlA/w-d-xo.html

I gotta ask... Can you imagine what a disaster it would be, to have this song produced today? You know, with 'Auto-Tune'... Gone would be those perfect imperfections that make the human voice... you know... human! 🤔😒😏

  • @marilynotte7059
    @marilynotte7059 ปีที่แล้ว +5

What he did WAS terrible if you are looking for perfection. But, in this case it makes it sounds like it could be your "significant other" singing it to you. It makes it easier to imagine that it is being sung directly to you.

If the "Little Rascals" sang this, they stole it from Billy Preston and Joe Cocker.
So many young folks these days hear something that was stolen or leased from the original, and then wonder why it sounds familiar, without knowing, maybe without checking who wrote it, who released it first, et cetera.
