  • Hi everyone & welcome back!
    **NOTE REGARDING VOLUME**
    I have had numerous requests in the past to increase the volume in my videos.
    The dialogue portion of this video has very loud volume, I would suggest turning it down and increasing to suit.
    This video is by far the most requested topic of all time.
    I do hope that it lives up to your expectations.
    In the video I go over some of the background and technical information regarding de-grafting cactus from pereskiopsis.
    As with anything cactus related there will be different opinions on how to do certain things, this video is about the method that I use and have done so for a number of years now.
    Part 2 of this series will show the actual de grafting process in full detail. Part 3 will be the setting of my degrafted scions for rooting.
    The series will conclude later in the year with the final results.
    I would recommend watching each part as there will be information, tips & tricks on how to degraft properly and what to look for at the various stages.
    I hope you find the video useful.
    Thank-you for watching and of course ...... Happy Gardening!

      If you're active on the cactus FB groups(especially the tricho/lopho/ario ones)...I can guarantee you that you can find plenty of people willing to hook you up with some pereskiopsis cuttings(although I recommend selenicereus). You prob wouldn't even have to pay. Heck, I'd send you some pere for free(as long as you're not in AU), just cover the shipping cost bc.... I'm poor 😣.

    Hi Walker beautiful grow, recently started some grafts on perikopsis what do you feed your grafts whit? ❤

    • @87walker
      @87walker  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A general purpose fertiliser is fine, that is all I used for years.
      Right now I am using a commercial powder that is lower in nitrogen.
      To find something similar just look for a fertiliser that is designed for flowers and/or fruit.

    Hi ,, just wondering how long does a cactus graft take to heal up before you can take off the elastic bands of?,,, as I swap grafted a column cactus with a ball cactus that through growth got fine white spines and the column cactus is dark green with fine ridged spines,, but don't know the name of both plants ,, I grafted years back,, decided to graft again, can't remember how long it takes. THANK YOU .🌵🪴

    Hi, thanks for the vid. Been watching for the last couple of days since finding your vids. Hard to find an Aussie TH-camr with a cacti channel.
    Is there any advantage to using Pereskiopsis over something like a pachanoi or bridgesii for the grafting stock?

    • @87walker
      @87walker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey,
      Peres is by far the fastest grafting stock for seedlings, it will also take very young seedlings with an excellent success rate.
      I often graft seedlings that are just a few days old and still have their seed cap attached!
      I no longer use pach for grafting anything as I do not believe it performs nearly as well as other options (video coming out about this later in the year)
      Bridgesii is more of an ornamental cactus in my opion but no reason it wouldn't work for grafting.
      Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

      Planning to do some grafting with both bridgesii and Peri but I'm also hoping to learn how to aerole or slab graft properly onto Peri as I have a variegated peruvianus and CSD that I want to clone.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The purpose of an introduction video is to outline the process and highlight the steps that will be taken.
      Simply filming taking to a cactus with a scalpel would leave many people with more questions than answers.
      The video features stylised images of the method that I use which are clearer and easier to understand.
      I do need to make considerations when producing a video that there are varying degrees of knowledge amongst my viewers.
      But I will save you the hassle of watching the next video and just tell you how to degratf here....
      Cut the pereskiopsis out of the scion.
      Good luck and Happy Gardening!

      A useful and constructive suggestion. I have amended the video title as I agree there could be more clarity around the content. Part 2 will be out in the next week or two and will be 100% practical demonstrations across a number of different de-grafting scenarios.
      Stay tuned!

    Reverse grafts are a waste of time??!! How about *not* using the bottom of a scion to make a second graft(when possible) is a waste of cacti?... especially when grafting rare and endangered species like lophophora, ariocarpus etc. I've had great success w/ reverse grafts.
    Anyway, I'm still a fan of your videos. Your collection is still beautiful. I gotta recommend using selenicereus for pere-size grafts tho. There are no glochids, it's easier to graft to, the scion can stay on for significantly longer(if not indefinitely), you can easily graft a scion to an unrooted cut of selen, and selenicereus is just as easy and quick to propagate as pereskiopsis.
    Thanks for another great video. I'm glad that people like you are willing to make these types of vids... it helps get(and keep) other people interested in cacti.
    Have a good one.
    Oh...I forget if you've mentioned this before, but do you pollinate your cacti to increase the number of seeds you can reap from your collection? And, on that note, do you keep/store/sell etc those seeds to help others get access to quality genetics? If not, you may want to consider it... you can either give them away in a sort of "contest" on your YT channel(or FB maybe) which would help get you more followers and help others, especially cacti newbies, become interested in growing from seed. Plus there can never be too many seed sellers/distributers out there who provide seeds from very cool cacti... especially someone reliable like you. There are too many people/companies that sell old seeds w/ low germination rates and/or seeds that are mislabeled. I can't even count the number of times I've heard a cacti enthusiast(usually a newb) complain about how they ordered seeds for X cactus but when they germinated they turned out to not even be a succulent.
    Sry for the novel I just wrote... self-quarantine is boring.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi James,
      I mostly graft seedlings that are often just a few days to a few weeks old maximum. At this size it is essentialy impossible to get 2 scions from a seedling. Larger plants can be top and tailed as there will be areoles on the bottom portion, I still do not do reverse grafts as I prefer to maximise the "neck" which makes degrafting easier. There are methods I use if maxmium propogation is the end goal and I may make a video on this in the future, these methods will out-perform reverse grafts.
      At this stage I sow all the seed my plants produce, maybe one day in the future I will sell/gift seed but I am not happy with the stability of genetics at this stage. Happy Gardening!
