For those in the comments saying that the guy didn't have a "real" cult experience, it definitely was. He was living and only associating with 15-25 people, paying them THOUSANDS of dollars while being a vulnerable college student, and being threatened with being kicked out if he didn't continue. He also mentioned that the members were encouraged to get that money by any means -- begging or stealing. An organization that controls your life and makes it extremely difficult to leave? Definitely a cult, even if his experience was different than the women in this video

Yeah exactly, cults don't have to be all some 'crazy jesus hyper conservative religious' thing... They're not all Jonestown. And that's how it's so insidious. It preys on vulnerable people who are lacking something and are so wanting to be a part of something that they ignore all the little things and end up getting in deeper and deeper and eventually find themselves completely isolated and controlled, like they'll lose everything and become completely ostracized if they leave and pursue anything different. It's about control and dominance and being deferential to some 'almighty all knowing leader' or doctrine to the point that you have no confidence or ability to think or act for yourself. Yes it's absolutely a cult, just not the way we tend to think when we hear the term 'cult'. Still is though. And it's still horrible.

Anyone saying that the gentleman's story isn't as important as the others: shame on you. Not only is that entirely closed-minded, it's overtly sexist. If he had been a woman saying she was made to sexually stimulate several men a day to achieve some kind of spiritual enlightenment, you would be calling it exactly what it is: manipulating someone for sexual gratification, i.e. sexual assault.
Sexual assault means you are not a willing participant, and he clearly was. I don't know why we all have to pretend that sex is the same from a male and female perspective when it patently isn't.
He himself said that he wasn't badly affected by it. He just paid way too much for sex tips.

It's not sexist. The women spent their entire childhoods being indoctrinated, not being educated, and being scared into beliefs. They would have been forced into marriages. They didn't have any choice in joining.They either lost family or now have a strained relationship with them now as they believe their daughters are going to hell and went against everything they taught them. He made a poor decision, was manipulated, went into debt, and was "really sad for two months". It's just not comparable and it's not because he's a dude.

I relate so much to the blonde woman--I also grew up in the south, part of a close-knit church, and was homeschooled. I was never part of a cult, but I am so grateful to her for attesting to the isolation that comes from this kind of upbringing. She (and the rest of them!) are all so brave to talk openly about this.

For those of you who don’t get it, the difference between a cult and a religion is that religion is up to the interpreter. Cult leaders go to the extreme of spreading false information to their flock and basically find ways to isolate them from the rest of society, control their finances by making there be a membership fee and control how people act towards each other. Religion offers rules and guidelines, but whether or not you want to follow them is up to you, but if you’re in a cult you don’t have choices. You do as your told or you get shunned. It happens in mainstream churches and Temples, but you are never truly obligated to attend your place of worship, if you are not in a cult.

Baepsae Forced as in coerced/manipulated, you don't need to be a child to be taken advantage of. Most of the time you just have to feel like you're helpless and lost and then some smooth talking, nice and friendly person comes to you and tells you how they can help and then boom, you're with people who are manipulating you, but you feel like you have a purpose so you don't notice their deception.

I am so sorry that the Bible has been misconstrued so many times and in so many ways to create cults or extreme religions of any kind. I've heard the whole "A man is supposed to rule over his wife" or something along those lines, and this is only partly true. The verse *actually* goes on to say that a man must love his wife and *give himself up for her*. Sex is supposed to be mutual; marriage is a partnership. Yes, I do believe that the man is the head of the household, but I also notice how the book of Proverbs personifies wisdom as a woman. The two work together. There are so many times I hear people say they're Christian and then pick and choose which parts of that faith they *want* to believe and it makes me beyond angry because when I say I stand for the same God, I am looked at as if I'm every other extremist.

You hit the nail right on the head. I was in a group for a year and it professed to believe the entire Word of God but some of its practices weren’t lining up with scripture. Although I feel manipulated and isolated from what happened it’s helping me to learn how to forgive others as Jesus said we should.

cults are different than religions...cults are usually controlled by one single leader, basically fill a role similar to a dictatorship. People in cults aren’t allowed to have lives outside of that cult, members live together and anything that isn’t seen as dedicating their whole life at all times to that cult is seen as shameful. Along with this is isolation, members aren’t allowed to interact with people outside of the cult. Cults brainwash people by preying on their vulnerabilities and although people may compare this to religion they are two separate things. Forcing a belief vs. reinforcing a belief are different and if someone of a religion portrays the force of a belief they are doing religion wrong. I mean there are tons of other differences that really aren’t hard to find doing the absolute minimum of research....foolishness

The scary thing is that the religious ones (I don't really know what to think of the sex one) are only a few steps away from real religions in terms of belief and practice. I was raised pretty fundamentalist christian in the US, and the priority given to males, young earth beliefs, and isolationist practices in line with 'being in the world but not of it' are pretty similar to what is being described here. Of course, the leap to where these guys got to where an organization totally controls your life is obviously and extreme one, and way beyond what I experienced. But the number of parallels makes it easy to see why one could get dragged in. The craziness can ver easily be shrouded in seemingly acceptable or even beneficial practice.

I've grown in a christian church and even though i can see why someone would say that cult's practices are derived from christian teachings, i can tell you that's not what 'true' christianity is like, if you take time to study the Bible (in context) and see what it actually says about that. My dads family was in a cult. I visited it when I was younger, and telling people about it now makes me realize it that much more that it was a cult and not just a regular church. It was mainly Mexican/Hispanic families, the Bible was in Spanish and no English was allowed. The kids and adults judged my sisters and I because we were half white and didn't speak Spanish. I saw how it was from my aunt, she would give all her money to the "church", she and my female cousin were not allowed to wear pants, no piercings or jewelry or makeup, no tattoos and they weren't allowed to cut their hair or shave. When people from the "church" came over, they had to turn off all the lights and electronics, light candles and have a prayer session at the coffee table. I don't remember how long these would last, but it was scary to be in the home when they did this. All the men in the family would be required to shave their face regularly and have short hair. No long hair was allowed. No tattoos either. The men were in charge and the women were their servants. It was scary to see this. My dad recently went back to the "church" and we are no longer on speaking terms.

My best friend has been a Jehovahs witness since birth. We've been friends since grade 4 and now we've graduated high school. I went off to uni but she got baptised and decided to dedicate her life to Jehovah. She really believes in everything in her bible. I've tried to convince her to do something else along with her religious activities (or later in life) , something that would secure her a living but she doesn't lend a ear. She is really important to me so it frustrates me. Whenever I get upset I talk to her but she responds with her religion and offers me some JW things to read. She's a really smart, kind, caring girl but as an outsider, I think her religion detrimental and stripping her from her freedom.

She's a really bright girl with excellent grades, kind personality but she doesn't want to go to university (she originally intended too). She said she won't be able to spend as much time for her religious practice which is what she does 7 days a week for several hours. I'm worried that one day if she stops believing that she regrets to have dedicated so much time. Is this not a valid concern?
I'm aware that she wants to continue her religious activities. And like I said I'm not against it at all and I totally respect her religion. I'm worried that later in her life, if she runs into trouble with money or something she'll regret not having gone to university like many other people.

And no, I don't constantly tell her all these things I only suggested to her once to continue on to university, she evidently said no. I didn't pry further because I didn't want to hurt her or our relationship. Hence why I am expressing my concerns and venting my frustrations here, anonymously, so she can't see it.

I'm biracial and have a mix of both cultures and religion. My family believes in both. At the same time, we also believe in science so from me these are questions I've always wondered:
Is there guarantee that there will be everlasting life if you dedicate your life to God/Jehovah? We never know. You may argue that it's on your bible but how many bibles are out there? Is there any guarantee that your supreme figure that you believe in is the real supreme figure? If your God is so loving, why must you dedicate your life in order to 'secure' everlasting life?
These questions apply to all religions.
And Leon, are you claiming that you openly ask your friends to talk about their religion? My friend refuses to watch any shows/cartoons that have a 'magical aspect' or 'supernatural' aspect because she saids 'I don't believe in it'. I think its contradictory that you want to share your religion but you block out everything that you don't believe in even though people who watch these 'superpower shows' know that such things don't exist. According to you, good friends would ask their friend to talk about a religion that they do not believe in, right?

I was born into a cult too. My dad is still a leader of it. When I was born it was called Bible Speaks Church and since 1987 it has been called Greater Grace World Outreach and their bible college was called Stevens School of the Bible and since 1987 it has been called Maryland Bible College and Seminary. It is a fundy christian church and they should be avoided at all costs. They are based in Baltimore, Md, which is where I largely grew up and due to economic limitations I still live in Baltimore. I left officially when I was 20 after going to community college and having friends outside of that version of faith. If not for the two gay men that I met who thankfully shattered the lies that I had been brought up to believe were true I would possibly still be in that cult today and I would probably be still deeply closeted, married to some pastor and have too many kids.

JULIA TIO any group that uses mind control tactics such as shaming of questioning via threats of death and/or hell or hell like after life. This cult that I grew up in is on many lists of cult watching organizations. It changed it's name and moved to Baltimore in the late 80s because they were publicly taken to court by a woman and her husband after the husband learned that the founder and then leader and his then wife had used tactics to talk her out of her inheritance. They also lost their property due to that as well up in Lee, Massachusetts. Cults be they religious or ideal based will reel you in with messages of love and kindness and non judgment aka "grace" as my up bringing called it. But then when they get into their group they will come up to you with lots of pressuring to meet unrealistic expectations to be 100% obedient to their ridgid rules. I was born and raised a Unificationist like Mika in the video. I no longer am a member but I will say that I was quite happy until I grew old enough to experience life outside of the bubble of the church. There was so much that was hidden from members - so many lies, misuse of money, sexual affairs, and crazy family drama within the Moon family that was not mentioned here and that I did not find out about until I was 20. However, being a Moonie was all I knew and the community that surrounded me all believed the same thing. It's easy to get lost in that.

She’s my best friend and I feel really bad for her because she doesn’t want to be there, she’s gay and already has a husband arranged for her. He wasn't forced to do anything - he chose. The two women were *raised* in an f-ed up situation. He saw a Ted talk and thought "Yeah, a sex cult sounds awesome!" and ended up not liking it after a while. Well maybe his experience isn't as "intense" as the 2 other people, but it's very dangerous to trivialize his experience. It needs strength to give up your life, your circle, even if they are the result of a bad decision. And it's also counterproductive to tell a person in a situation of vulnerability that they put themselves into it. A victim of domestic violence might have "put themselves" into the situation, but it doesn't make the situation any less serious, and they still need support to go thru it. Also, I personally appreciate that his experience shows that cult can take many different forms, and can draw in many types of people. It's not always religious and it's not always obvious that it is going to be a cult.

I was in a cult growing up. I had to go to this building 5 days a week and listen to the cults teachings. We had to take tests, sometimes they would make us stay after school er I mean after the teachings if we behaved poorly. We had to wear selected clothes and bring our own stationery and books.

So, I actually did a research paper on cults once. The most common way a cult recruits new members, is by having members of the cult hang out in university/college counseling centers. Because, those in university/college are often a) away from home, friends, and family, so they are feeling lonely and vulnerable. b) are at an age in their life where they are open to change, and wanting to discover their purpose c) emotionally fragile from the stress of school, away from home etc. This way the members can be all 'yeah I felt that way too until I met people who understood me and helped me feel whole again'. And because they are often away from their families, their family members don't realize until they are so deep into the cult they are so devoted to the delusion its hard to break them out. Also, the two things that make a cult a cult is, 1) You have to have members go out recruiting 2) You have to dedicate a portion of your income to the church or group. So by this definition, Scientology and Mormon are considered cults - not too sure on Jehovahs Witness (not sure if income contribution is required or just recommended). Anyways its fucked. Dont hate me for naming the religions above, I have friends of all religions, just what I saw in my research,

As soon as Mika said she was born into a cult, I knew she was going to talk about the Unification Church. I think she either didn't dive very deep into the actual doctrine and church culture herself, or the clips they selected from her didn't hit those points. It came across much tamer than it is.

I was also born in the Unification Church. I just turned 16 and I can say it is not a cult in the way that the other two cults were. Those ones were just messed up. I am free to do whatever I want because ultimately whether I stick to the teachings or not is my decision. I am not punished or put down. My parents and other members can only educate me in hopes that I can have a strong relationship with God. Reverend Sung Myung Moon is and incredible man. If you read his autobiography -'the life of a peace loving global citizen' you can see all the suffering and love he has put into the world for the sake of other people. He has lived selflessly, so wether he is a 'Messiah' or not, really doesn't matter. He has tried to unite North and south korea, he has met the queen, he has created charity organisations all with the purpose of uniting everyone on this Earth . To create heaven on Earth. We do not discriminate we only love. We accept all religions. That's the point. Bring EVERYONE on this Earth to teach to love and to unite. It's as simple as that. I was briefly a member of the church and what it was was they were trying to create the perfect world by a series of steps starting with the perfect family. Which since Adam and Eve failed to do and the family was tainted, they had to make the perfect community and then work out the bad to make the perfect family, and that’s what Jesus failed to do, so his only option to try and change things afterwards was to be crucified, like it was a back up plan.

When I was a freshman in college I was walking to a club meeting one day when this girl came up to me asking me about the Bible and if I believed in God. I'm not super religious and I don't like being approached by strangers so I tried brushing her off. She was super persistent though and even followed me for a few feet. I'm too awkward of a person to just tell someone to go away so I talked to her for a few minutes thinking she was in a Bible club on campus or something. I think I might have given her my email then gave her an excuse that I was in a hurry to get somewhere. I don't think I even ended up going to the club I was going to I just went home. I completely forgot about this until now but thinking back on it I wonder if she was trying to recruit cult members. They said in the video they go to college campuses. And why would some girl be approaching students at like 10 at night? She didn't seem like a threat at the time but that was probably the point. Looking back on it now the whole situation was really sketchy.

Wow, these stories (especially the blonde woman's) sound so familiar to my life... I was born into a conservative mennonite culture where we all went to the same church, believed the same things, and didn't mingle with people outside of our group. Women wore dresses and were supposed to be subservient to men. We had our own private schools, but too much education was discouraged. We weren't allowed to watch tv or listen to music or to have musical instruments. I would probably still be a part of it, had my parents not defied their families, friends, and culture to leave. It certainly hasn't been easy, but I'm so thankful they did. If we had stayed, I wouldn't have been able to be a dancer (since we weren't allowed to dance either) and now dance is my whole life. I'm so glad I can do more with my life than just getting married and having children. Much love to whoever has had an experience like this.

I'm genuinely curious, what bad experiences did you have with Mormonism that led you to leave? For me, I appreciated the spirituality aspect, the gospel, and the coming to know myself better and knowing I had a purpose. Yet I don't like going to church often, maybe once every month and a half, because the church-going part is led by the hands of people--and wherever people are, corruption, incorrect teaching, and self-proclaimed preaching (like in Sunday school) will follow. Like teaching the girls to dress modestly so the boys won't be tempted rather than teaching the young men to not sexualize/think they're superior to the woman. And pushing missions on men so much, like manipulating men into going and saying that's their duty rather than saying that's their choice. Which it should be.
So glad my boyfriend and I didn't go, we were both heavily pressured to but he struggles with depression and I have health problems (which my crazy mother assured me would be "healed" simply by me going and doing the Lord's work, messed up). The teachings in church became so cookie-cutter and dismissive of any issues you may be having, to the point that there are completely unempathetic Mormons who believe you can just pray your problems away.

Half my family is inactive on both sides but we would never shun each other. I love them all and can't imagine a life without them! It's not a christ-like thing to do, quite the opposite and your family obviously has much to learn about acceptance and unconditional love - the foundation of our church. When members, of there own free will, adopt this cult mentality of not associating with non members and shunning those who leave (even their own families!) its no wonder we get called a cult. Even if we are actively being encouraged to do the opposite. As I mentioned in my answer above I believe there is a difference here between the US and the rest of the world or at least between 'Mormon hubs' and the rest of the world. 'Utah' - Mormonism at its worst is a toxic, cesspool of judgement and faux perfection. I'm sure had I grown up there I, too, would have felt forced to leave the religion behind. Xx

I grew up in the Unification church and my parents (my dad is Cuban and my mom is Polish) were matched by rev. moon and had an arranged marriage. My family left the church when I was in highschool, mainly because of a lot of scandals and corruption that was going on, and while Im glad that I'm not a part of that organization anymore, I can't deny the benefits of growing up with the church's ideals either. I have an amazing family and parents who love each other and are going 25 years strong, regardless of how they met/got married. Growing up, my parents took me and my siblings to a different church every other Sunday (catholic mass, hindu temples, friday prayer at our local mosque, synagogues, you name it) and told us that all religions are just different paths toward the same goal and that there is beauty (and imperfection) in all of them. I don't think you can boil down an entire church or 'cult' to the experience of one person, and just like there is a lot of things wrong with (and a lot of wrong done in the name of ) all the major religions of the world, there is also a lot of wisdom and perspective you can gain from religion. I think the cult aspect of Unificationism comes from the glorification of Rev. Moon and the Moon family in general, which was definitely a problem, and looking back, the church itself is set up in a very sheltered/close-minded way. On the other hand, I really value a lot of the church's ideals on family and peace, as well as a lot of the spiritual ideas about who God is and how the universe came to be (a lot of the ideas are explained using science and logic; no denying evolution or climate science). I feel like we as humans like to label things as good or bad, black or white, and never think about them again because its the easiest thing to do, but in doing so we miss out on the gray area that makes life so beautifully complex

I understand what you mean. Your parents are kind people, who had fortunately met each other and lived a good life. They are good for each other. But arranged marriages come with a lot of stigmas, related to divorce and other patriarchal problems. I know people who have suffered because of arranged marriages, I know a lot of them. I live in a country where arranged marriage is ideal, although, it turns out to be beneficial for some, largely it contributes to patriarchy, as it holds a woman's wishes of choosing a partner or ending a marriage lower than that of the husband or the 'families' and the society. But that is my experience, I respect yours too. :)

It’s a good video, but i didn’t like the editing. It cut from one story to next. Kind of like interrupting. But other than that, these stories are really interesting
