    Is there a risk of soldering the jump ring to the chain? Hopefully, because you are not using a flame as such the whole jump ring won't heat up. Am I correct?

    You might want to clarify in this video that this technique will not work with actual silver solder, and thus is of no use for sterling silver or any other precious metal jewelry, including silver-filled and gold-filled - or for brass or copper. It can only be used on base metal.
    Proper silver solder has more like 40% silver in it, not a measly 4%, and forms a much stronger joint. It also has to be used with much higher heat than any soldering iron can produce.
    Soldering with a soldering iron is what is called "soft soldering", because it occurs at very low temperatures. Quality jewelry is put together with "hard" soldering, which uses much higher temperatures. This includes brass and copper - *real* brass or copper, not the plated pewter or base metal stuff that is most of what most bead stores sell.
    Such higher temperatures are not suitable for base metal, however, and will melt it, so don't try using silver solder and a torch if you are working with base metals. That is what this Dremel and similar soldering irons will work on. You also have to be very careful what solder you select for soft soldering, since the solders that work with a soldering iron often contain a lot of very toxic materials, and are not meant to be either breathed in or to come into contact with skin.
    Someone mentioned using a Smith Little Torch to solder silver jump rings, and that is recommended by Mark Nelson of Rio Grande. It would in fact be a better solution, if you are working with any sort of precious metals - except that the setup costs more than $600, so it's not a cost effective one if one is only soldering a few things every so often. My search for an appropriate and more affordable solution thus goes on.

      Wendyahn- that was incorrect information. This can in fact be used for precious metals. They are just showing the soldering tip. If you remove the tip, you can get plenty of heat with your torch... This little torch can run continuously for 45+ minutes. It is great for wood burning as well. I purchased one and it is awesome for the price.

      So use precious metal solder rather than lead free solder?

    • @Poznog
      @Poznog 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a butane torch that I bought from a hardware store. They run about $30. Just make sure you get one with an adjustable flame. I use either easy or extra easy silver solder for jewelry.

    It will probably only work with easy or soft solder and not medium and hard. Also, you have to apply the flux all the way around the joint or the solder will not flow where there is no flux. You would do so much better with a smith little torch.

    • @James-rf2ln
      @James-rf2ln ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use it as a torch too so that would work with medium&hard solder. I wouldn’t be using this lead solder (or whatever it is) meant for electrical soldering on jewellery

    what liquid used in this video (3:57) ?

    • @pahasapaman
      @pahasapaman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +wolveretz Liquid "flux" compound. Flux usually comes in a "paste" form or contained within the solder wire. Flux is a chemical compound used to make solder "stick" to other metals. It's a chemical bond that is broken by the heat and changed by the chemicals in the flux. You can think of it as an acid cleaner. It cleans the metal before the solder flows. This removes almost all impurities between the bond.

  • @hosmanadam
    @hosmanadam 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    7:17 Like you said, the fumes are from the flux core and not from the solder itself, so it being lead-free makes no difference!
