  • Learn how to solder jump rings to your craft and jewelry projects. In this video you will learn to foil, flux and solder and how to care for your soldering iron. I will show you what not to do (as always) and share the tips and tricks I have picked up along the way. I will share the difference between a soldering gun, iron and torch. Be warned this is not the same technique as you would use for soldering electrical components. This video is for crafters looking to solder items for jewelry, scrapbooking and other crafty pursuits! Really, really good video! Just to be clear, what I'm about to say is NOT sarcasm, it's exactly why this video is so useful. Her workspace is a mess, she gets tangled up in tape and knocks stuff over while working, has destroyed and been burned by equipment, and accidentally solders her piece to the clamp it's in. I don't want to see a pristine set with pre-made demonstration pieces and a tidy crafter reciting a script and producing a perfect item in 2 minutes flat. I want to see exactly what to do, how to do it, what to use without spending a fortune, how to fix my inevitable goofs, and whether I can possibly do this craft without clearing off my kitchen table first. I'm so pleased this video was on TH-cam -- it's exactly what I needed, AND there's a Firefly reference! Awesome.

    Thank you for taking the time to not only make this video but also for taking the time to explain in detail every step. I wasn't sure how to even get started working with a soldering iron but now have confidence to do it.

    Wonderful video, thank you!!!
    Now I learned that my iron did not melt the solder was due to oxidation. I did not realize it was so important to de-oxide the tip frequently. I though it was my iron that was not hot enough or did not have enough wattage. I am glad I learned something from this video.
    And the flux. I learned from your video that flux goes with solder hand-in-hand; that you don't need to burn the flux first before applying solder; that it's okay to put the solder on the iron and melt it and apply it to the work piece, that it also works not to applying solder to the work piece but to the solder directly as some other video said.
    There are two kind of skills for work. One is doing things rapidly, but seemingly dis-organized. The other is paying close attention to the details, and works its way to step by step slowly yet does everything precisely. The former is efficient, although it appears somewhat out of order. The latter has precision work, but seems kind of slow.
    You belong to the former, and I like it. You get the work done fast, and the quality of the work is no less than the latter. My wife also belongs to the former; and me, as a computer programmer, kind of pay attention to details, but slow.
    Great video, hope to see more of your work!

    Thank yo so much Lyndsay. This is the most helpful video that I've found on learning to solder, as a beginner. It's brilliant that you are so clear about what everything is, and roughly how much it costs. Your work "space" is very much like mine, which made me feel like I could do it to in my limited space. Thank you! xx

    This is a great tutorial! I learned so much from you and your followers. In my research, I did learn that cleaning your piece (I use alcohol) before you apply the tape will enable it to stick much better and also before applying the solder. In other words, don't touch it with your hands if possible (use tweezers). Thank you, again for sharing your expertise!

    I use lead free plumbers solder (it is safe enough for your drinking water to go through so it is fine on your skin) and you can get it at the hardware store or stained glass shop. the copper tape needs to be purchased from a stained glass supplier:) You can buy it online if you don't have a local resource. Get the flux at the hardware store too!

    Okay seriously I just adore your self deprecating humor. You're fun. I know *nothing* about this but am learning everything I can so I can make... doll jewelry. For my dolls, you know? One thing I want to make is a clamp style sterling silver bracelet with a garnet in the center. This sounds so easy doesn't it? It's Not Easy! "What heat do I need to melt silver? How much should I hammer it to flatten the coil? Which needle nose pliers are best for this fine work? What temperature shatters a garnet? Oh. That's not good. What other stone could I use? (looks in bag of gems) I don't have those stones" and on and on and on, along with a *strong desire not to ever burn or otherwise harm one of my cats while crafting, and all three of them just love to HELP me do stuff*. I hope you enjoyed my comment as much as I enjoyed your video.

    Thanks so much for this video. You've opened new possibilities for my crafting projects. In my day, soldering was considered a skill for males to learn (usually in electronics class). Since electives in schools are underfunded, I hope Father's (or male figures) will pass on their traditionally, male oriented knowledge to their girls. It's also a chance to strengthen the Father/Daughter bond. Strengthen this bond and and she will grow up with better self esteem.

    Thank-you for this. All I wanted was a simple soldering video and voila. I did take a couple of classes last year but when it's not at home in my art room, I tend to forget some of the teaching. Received a lovely soldering kit at Christmas, have some Kevlar material for safety ( on my wood table, over the carpet on floor and a wee bit for my lap. I gather you could also use a cookie sheet instead on your table. Or tin foil ? ). Really looking forward to making collaged glass bevel pendants !

    Lindsay? I know this is an older vid, but just had to ask, have you ever looked into soldering copper tubing ? Once long ago in a far off land, i put in all the copper plumbing and redid the old ... I didnt have a clue, read a book, asked the guy at the store, took everything home and went for it. OMG, i was in love within seconds! If you but the larger tubing, you can make .. projects? trellis? tables, lamps, anything, lol. But then that leads to more things, like buying or making a form to curve the tubing in.
    If you havent gone there yet, please do so? Your imagination is the only limit! er and coin of course, lol. I love this vid. Love the cup, love everything, er the clutter? and the fact you just keep going.. Im like that.. once ive started i just keep going.. I dont want to lose any momentum..

    I could not find a tip to fit, I did try that first but I save the old iron because I bet I can find some somewhere because they are Webber, I snagged a new iron that works great (and extra tips) on sale at Mardens (a salvage and surplus shop) and it has a point tip that works much better for jewelry. That is a great" tip" though...no pun intended:)

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    the copper tape is for wrapping around glass or stones so the solder will stick to it, solder will not stick to glass. Solder will not stick to aluminum, that tape is more for decoration. If you are using copper or steel wire and no glass you do not need the tape, the tape is for non solderable items. You can get copper tape in silver and gold color too, that might be what you have. You can try it;)

    the solder is typically a silver color but you can patina it to a black or color it with a sharpie (really, you can LOL!) the tape is copper but the backside is available in copper, black, silver and also gold i think. Solder covers the copper on the front side but sometimes you can see the back side of the tape if working with clear glass.

    @ez2stepon yes, you need to make a 6 sided cube out of glass. you an use picture frame glass. foil every edge and flux then solder the sides to the back peice. fill the frame with decoration ans and solder on the front peice. that is the proper way.

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    @thefrugalcrafter or you can build the cube by taping the glass, fluxing and soldering. it would be easier for a small peice

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    OK, I did some research and regular solder can be used on aluminum but here's the rub, you need to use a very hot iron or torch and file (scratch up to remove the layer of aluminum oxide) the surface of the aluminum then quickly flood the solder on it to tin the area, then you will be able to solder on that. Google "how to solder aluminum"" for better advise than I can give and good luck:)

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    It is simple, just wrap each piece of seaglass with copper tape, flux and tin the edges and solder a jump ring on each end, make 6 of these. then attach the soldered sea glass to each other with jump rings and add a clasp on one end:)

    Instead filing your solder tip to clean it...buy a block of Sal Ammoniac at Ace Hardware. To use the block, make a grove in the block. Pull a bead of solder and roll the tip in the grove of the block. I do this every few minutes or so. Your soldering tip will be clean, bright and shiny and last for years.

    Hi Lindsay, Thank you for all your tutorials. You're awesome! Fyi: I've learned fron stained glass class I'm taking is to use Ammoniac Tinning Block to clean and tin your solder iron tip. It really works well. Also, instead of a wet sponge use Tip cleaning wire frim Hakko. It's a waterless sponge. It removes debris and some corrosion from the soldering tip but soft enough that it won't damage the tip. I'm a big fan of Amazon and that's where I bought them. Lol I'm sure there's other sites to buy them from.

    • @VRUAN
      @VRUAN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazon is no longer the cheapest place for products. Buy the same Hakko from eBay, you'll get it cheaper and most merchandises shipped free.

    I like most of your videos but maybe I can help you this time with a suggestion. To make your soldering MUCH better you need to burnish the copper foil tape on the glass or stones you are wrapping. Take a wooden tool like a wooden bone folder and give the piece a good once over on all sides and surfaces. Your pieces will turn out phenomenal!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Julia Martin thanks!

    • @cyberdan1000
      @cyberdan1000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even an ice cream stick would work and they are more fun to get. But, as said earlier in the comments, copper tape is not good for wearable pieces. Look at the seaglass bracelet photo shown to get you to watch the video. That copper tape is pulling up everywhere. A very thin adhesive is used. It is only strong enough to make the foil stick to the glass.

    I really appreciate all your help! I actually had looked up how to attach aluminum to aluminum & saw what you described but it sounded more complicated than just going & trying steel wire. I found that for both aluminum & some wires they were saying to scrub down with sand paper & wash but I'd think washing would add another film. I'll try the alcohol & also will take a scratch pad & see what happens. Vid still has about an hour so you'll probably be in bed but I work weekends so no worries.

    That's interesting you used to work for Radio Shack, I remember I had a couple of products from them as a kid. I love the funny sub-titles you put in. I'm glad I found this video it was only yesterday that I was wondering how to solder in jewelry making as I had an idea for a project. Thanks for sharing.

    if you flux both letters it should be fine. The copper foil is for stuff like glass and stones that do not contain metal, it gives a surface for the solder to stick to. Metal to metal is fine as is as long as it is a solderable metal and you flux it:)

    hmmm, I don't know, my tape is copper on both sides, it might be handy to have a silver back if you can see through the glass you are soldering. Just make sure the tape is meant for soldering (aluminum tape is pretty but will not solder) and not just decorative. I bought mine at a stained glass shop and the prices were good plus they offer good advice! Have fun!

    Lindsay! You are a crack up! I'm glad I found you. I love your lighthearted manner and the way you leave your "learning curve irregularities" to show how things can go wrong and how to correct them. That is extremely rare in an instructional video. I wonder though whether the silver solder stays silver on the copper pieces? Is there copper colored solder? Sorry, I can't quite see how that works out. Thanks

    You should run the copper tape through the ring when you're sticking it to the edges of the glass. Then when you tin the copper tape, the ring will get soldered in place in the process. Not only will that create a stronger bond than soldering the ring to the outside of the tinned tape, but you won't have to fiddle around with the third hand gizmo.
    By the way, if you ever have any questions about electrical soldering, just ask. I worked at a PCB factory in Pittsfield, Maine in the 1990s, and I soldered about 4 million joints during my time there. I also trained new employees to solder.
    And now, thanks to your video, the "I should have bought it, when I saw it, at Marden's" jingle is stuck in my head.

      I'm from Dexter, which is about 45 minutes from Bangor. I used to go to Bangor a lot; as a kid we often went there on Friday nights for Mom to do some shopping.
      When I got my driver's license as a teenager in the early '90s my friends and I went there often to play pool at a place called Top Spot and go to the Space Port arcade at the Bangor Mall (I don't think either place still exists). I hardly ever go there now though. It used to be that if you wanted to buy something that wasn't available in a small town, you went to Bangor, but for the past 15 years or so, I've bought stuff like that online.
      I've driven through China several times; never stopped there.

      Is there a place called China in the U.S.? I'm just curious. Do the folks there called Chinese?
      I am from China, too, but obviously not the same town.

    • @MaximRecoil
      @MaximRecoil 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See I told you
      There's a town here in Maine, USA called "China". The people from that town are not called "Chinese" that I know of, though I can't say for sure because I don't live there. If they were called "Chinese" it would just be as a joke. Maine has several towns named after countries, such as Norway, Sweden, Mexico, etc. See this picture of a road sign in Maine - i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/jessieb1330/DSC06435.jpg

      Susan Bontrager I recommend going to the harware store, it will be the most economical and they have everything you need except for the Masterfoil tape, get that at a local stained glass supplier if you have one or maybe hobbylobby with a coupon.

    I'm new to jewelry making and just got a soldering iron for Christmas, super excited. I was just wondering, what if u want a copper colored finish? Also where did u get ur third hand? I live in Hawai'i and it's practically impossible to find much for soldering!
