Silver Pearls Have not tried it, but you can mix borax (Or boric acid?) with denatured alcohol flame it off, then there is a layer to protect the rest.

ill be trying this on tuesday! soldering a necklace finding to the end of a string of silver beads strung on 1mm foxtail chain. i have about 3-5mm extra chain to work with and needed this tip! (i thought about also submerging the string of beads under water and covering the top of the bowl with a heat shield and also putting stop flow on the chain so it doesnt suck away all the solder away from the joint)

Thanks for demonstrating a joint that provides reliable strength, yet has no mechanical connection (like twisted wires have). I just picked up a T&C toggle bracelet at a yard sale, but the little jump ring that holds the toggle ring on broke right where it was soldered to the ending bracelet link. I thought for the price of a repair I could buy a butane torch, some silver solder and borax, and just fix it myself. So thanks for the instruction. I'd have melted that jump ring for sure.

I was wondering if you could help me as when I make a ball with a little hole, I always struggle to get rid of the water after I cleaned it in a pickle. Sometimes I thought I got rid of all the acid then a few weeks later I realised I found a residue of acid. How can I get rid of all the water? Thanks in advance x
How do you set up your soldering to solder several pairs of posts on to the back of your small earrings at once? The other day I soldered 14 total to make 7 pairs & set each one up in a third arm w/ a clip which took awhile & figured there has to be a faster way to do this.

What happens to me is my tweezers tend to get stuck to the jump ring. Usually by heating them up slightly they will let go eventually, but sometimes the extra heat is just enough to melt and warp my jumpring/bail. Thanks for this tutorial, Andrew!
Andrew..I'm having trouble soldering thin and small bezel gallery wire and I put a 14g bead wire at the base of the gallery wire..I always end up melting something...do you have any advice...I've heated from the bottom..from the top and still end up melting product.sometimes the solder just turns black and doesn't melt..what is going on please help me figure this out...

When you apply the borax, with a brush to your piece, how is the borax prepared? Is it mixed with water that it needs to b applied with a brush? Is it a multi part solution?

I’m probably not being helpful here, because this is kind of the bane of my existence. I I deal with it in two ways, neither of which is “solving” it, so I will hope for more responses here. So the first thing is having backing soda dissolved in the rinse water. This neutralizes the acid so that if the rinse is incomplete you don’t get acid showing up inside the hollow form down the road. What you can get is chrystalized baking soda once it dries out, which is not a problem, you just need to have a second rinse bath that is plain water. The other thing that I always do is use a syringe to inject water into the cavity. I do this probably way more times than I need to. But I do it six to ten times. Aiming the tip this way and that. But it is a terrific amount of pressure inside. It still takes a while for the water to come out after this so I usually put it under a lamp, or something, and get busy with something else.
That was not exactly what I was looking to do when I crossed your video. But you taught me something for future jewelry making. Very interesting things to know, like not having them explode because a hole is there. But you said borax? I have that, did you also mix flux with borax? Or is it just borax that you're using. Subbed as well.
Man all your videos are great I can’t afford the membership to the website but this is just as good I’ve started silver smithing but I can’t seem to get it to pour it Melts but it doesn’t fully turn to liquid it like the top layer melts and the bottom is still hard any tips on how to get it to pour and what’s the acid you put it in to clean it I just sand it and wire brush bits to clean it or vinegar then sanding etc lol
The metal is not getting hot enough. The surface nay be molten but the heat has not reached to the core, middle of the metal. More heat or a stronger or simply more time is needed to get the whole lot of metal molten. We use a safety pickle, sodium bisulphate, as a pickle

We grind the borax cone on a non glazed dish with a little bit of water to produce a thin paste and then apply that

Do you always have to use a torch to solder or can you use an electric soldering iron with a temperature adjustment?
A soldering iron doesn't get *nearly* hot enough (~392-896°F). Easy silver solder needs ~1145°F to flow; hard solder needs ~1425°F.
