Kristie Wolfe's fairytale tiny house: giant potato + silo conversion

  • Kristie Wolfe spent over a year touring the U.S. with a giant potato to promote Idaho's spud industry and dreaming about turning the 28-foot-long tuber into a tiny home. Seven years later when the tater was finally retired, her wish came true. Kristie transformed the interior of the concrete, plaster and steel structure into a light-filled (for something with no windows) and cozy shelter, using whimsical furnishings like a DIY antler chandelier above the bed and a wine refrigerator for the kitchen.
Not wanting to add on to the potato for more space, she transformed a 14-foot-diameter grain silo into a bathroom. She turned an over-sized steel tub into a bathtub and created her own water-recycling sink/toilet combo.
To obtain permitting for guests, the city required Kristie to build a separate home and consider the potato an accessory unit (or ADU). With rooms already booked, she wanted to build the quickest and cheapest structure possible so she bought plans for a "Walden" tiny home and left it bare-bones minimum for permitting purposes.
The property, which she bought for $5000, is a 20-minute drive to Boise and in wintertime surrounded by fields of dirt so to add more activity for guests, she bought a cow. Dolly turned out to be more of a. pet than her dog and a love of her life. Now she's adapting her own tiny house on the property with windows that open up for Dolly's visits.

Amazing house and admire what you are doing. Please, please make Dolly a winter/ wind/ shelter barn and get her another little rescue cow as a freind. Dolly loves you but cows are not solitary and in winter and bad weather especially, they need each other for warmth. Even if regular ranchers leave there cows out, many die and its inhumane. Dolly shows that all cows are sentient, social beings.

maya george I should’ve addressed this in the video but Dolly came from a farm and she doesn’t like the company of other animals.
She does love humans though :)
Believe me if I thought she would be better off with another animal I would get it for her. I know they’re ‘herd’ animals Just like dogs are ‘pack’ animals but some of us prefer to be lone wolves. My dog is nearly 17 years old and has ignored every other dog even when we’ve cohabitated with them.
I think each animal - like humans - has their own distinct personality and preferences :)

Kirsten, this is the absolute cutest thing I’ve watched on TH-cam! My background? I’m in bed 98% of the time due to a very painful health condition. TH-cam is my escape, bcuz, well, drugs make it worse. At the onset of this video I was wondering what a drop dead gorgeous woman was doing gushing about a 🥔 potato?!? By the end I was in love with her ingenuity, intelligence and heart! Thank you for the high quality content you create, I adore your channel and the characters you bring to life. 💜

Hi Valerie, sorry to hear about your health.. i learnt from the audio book 'Power of Now' by the author Eckhart Tolle where he taught a method about 'inhabiting your inner body', it's a kind of meditation where we bring our alert presence into every part of our inner body especially the painful areas. I have tried it for serious cramps and after it worked the very first time i tried it, i hv used this method with any other pain i experienced and it helped lessen the pain very quickly.. i really hope by sharing this it can help lessen the pain you are in... i pray that God and Spirit and All Angels will Bless and Heal you. Love and Light and Blessings to you 🙏

I think your cow need another cow for company. They are a herd animal. Please get another cow to keep her company. 😢 I am a farm girl and know what I am talking about. I was raised on a dairy farm. Does she have a place to graze, do you feed her hay? She was running around because she is young. Our heifers will run down to our house in the evening (the pasture near our house). Cows look funny when they run. Love your place. I live in Northeast Pennsylvania and my brother has the farm we were raised on, the last dairy farm in South Canaan Township. Very sad our dairy farms are disappearing because the price of milk is so low they can’t survive.

Holly Samson aww, Holsteins and the NE (PA & NY) are forever linked in my mind from art in children’s books. I’m a Jersey fan (from familiarity). I’ve worked dairy in Minnesota and Indiana. And now patronize a 5 cow dairy and beef farm. Need to be on a farm again.

Love the shower diverter! I always hate that splash of cold water that happens immediately prior to the shower flow. I also love that floor with all the tiny triangles. The pattern was beautiful! As for Dolly, as a herd animal, she needs a buddy for the times when Kristie isn't at home and they need a shelter, at least a lean-to. But Kristie is a gorgeous and brilliant girl!

I also have a dog that she doesn’t like. 🤷🏻‍♀️
