My Kobalt 80V Cordless chainsaw stopped oiling the bar and chain. In this video, I show what happened and how to fix it. I also talk about a larger problem with a lot of cordless chainsaws and the inability to find parts.

I love my Kobalt 80 volt 5 ah 10" chain pole saw. It works great on my south east Louisianna farm that a Hurricain went through and trashed all woods on my 20 acre pproperty. Today I'll be cutting a 6 in limb of a tree out front.
I wasn't aware they sold an 80V with a 10" chain. It must really scream with that short of a chain. Besides this oiling gear issue, my 80V Kobalt has been a solid saw, and I've been impressed with its power. I just wish they sold more replacement parts for it.

I have a 60V greenworks that seems to have the same layout/plan and I haven't been able to find much information about debugging it online.
You wouldn't happen to know what would cause it to immediately after starting? It started to shut down every few starts 2 days ago, and I had to eject and replace the battery to get it to turn back on. It became more and more frequent over the last 2 days and now my saw is unusable. It stops as soon as I start it just about every time I try to cut.
Do you have any pointers for where to look?
There are a few issues that could cause this:
1) Dirty connections. Be sure the electrical connections between the battery and saw are clean; a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol will work to clean them.
2) Excessive chain friction. Make sure the chain turns freely by hand. If the saw detects a stuck chain, it will shut off.
3) Temperature. The saw will shut off if the controller or battery are too hot (after running the saw for a while).
If you've checked these things, and the shutoffs persist, it's likely that the motor is drawing excessive current or the battery or controller are bad, resulting in false current or temperature measurements.
@@outdoorsinoregon Thanks so much for the tips! It happens when the saw is cold, so, the chain spins pretty free by hand, and it happens with all 3 of my batteries. So I'll give all the contacts a good cleaning and hope that fixes it. I hope it's not the controller!
Great video! I was wondering why my chain was getting rusty. I love going inside and watching TH-cam after cutting fire wood and not smelling like gas.

I wonder if this is the same with the 24v Kobalt, because I have the same problem. It leaks pretty much all of the bar oil out of the reservoir. Pretty sad because it's a great saw.
I don't have familiarity with the 24V saw, but it wouldn't take much effort to remove the side cover to take a look. However, leaking oil is a separate issue and could be related to a damaged or loose hose or seal.
Temperature fluctuations can also cause oil leaks, as a closed plastic tank will contract when it gets cold and expand when warmer, acting like a pump. You can loosen the cap to allow better venting or drain the tank when storing the saw to help with this.
Did you find a new e-clip to replace that coil wire? If yes what size is it ?
No, I haven't.
good video, what caused the gear to strip out wasn't wood chips but friction from cutting without any oil. If you own one of these saws keep the oil tank filled and everything will be ok.
The only way to increase friction on the worm gear would be for the oil pump to seize or to get foreign material into the gear. The oil pump never had an issue, never seized or partially seized, was and still is working perfectly.
And I never ran the saw without oil. I did, however, find the whole area completely packed tightly with chips. This in combination with a cheap plastic gear caused the failure.
Mine also seemed like it wasn't oiling enough. No splash at all like regular chainsaws so I think it's severely under oiled
Mine gets plenty of oil, as long as the pump is working, but I am using a very thin oil in this saw. A thinner oil might help...or you might check your oiling gear to make sure it has all its threads.

very interesting...why would that part have a logo on it...thats crazy....almost like they made em for kobalt to be cheap and crappy and then made theres a lil bit better...considering they want every1 to know who made that part....but ur right companies who offer parts to fix is a huge thing now...i was thinking about that the other day buying dremel parts...luckily they sell em which they better considering knockoffs are 1/10th the price to just buy new
The Makita part appeared to be of better quality, and I assume was made by a different supplier than the original Kobalt/Greenworks part. I guess time will tell if the new one holds up.
Yes, it was disappointing to learn that these saws don't offer replacement parts, as they are too expensive to just toss out.
I hate modern times everything is shittier nowadays everything is meant to be disposed of now. Modern Cars are trash, appliances are trash, music is trash, movies are trash, everything in 2023 sucks
I can't say I disagree. These saws are too expensive to not have parts available to fix them. Greenworks has a large line of other power equipment as well, and I'm wondering if parts availability is a problem with their other equipment or just their chainsaws.
