- Less than a week ago, the woman who was supposed to ease Labour's passage into government, Sue Gray, left her job as Chief of Staff following mounting pressure and rumours of fallouts behind the scenes.
Her replacement is Morgan McSweeney - now the most powerful man in politics that you've probably never heard of. The architect of Labour’s election victory, Starmer’s campaign manager, and now his main man in Downing Street. So, who is Morgan McSweeney? What motivates him? And what kind of power does he have in Number 10?

McSweeney = Starmer's Dominic Cummings.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Bore off you two original thinkers
Give it three months and he'll get sacked by Starmer's wife
What do you expect from a Tory with a red tie. Starmer has told more lies since becoming ;leader of his party (It's not Labour) than Johnson did as PM.
Yeah but Sweeney can shut his mouth
It is most worrying to hear that Mr McSweeney is responsible for the watering down of Milliband's Green Policies. Be careful. This country needs educating, incentivising and leadership on these issues. We can't afford the time to just listen to folks who are reluctant to change because it might "cost" them now, as the cost of inaction in the near future will be far, far greater. Starmer needs to lead, political advisors simply advise.
He will not learn even after they lose a LOT of council seats to the Lib Dems and Greens next year in the local elections.
Great episode Lewis, understanding the figures around Keir Starmer is important. Whatever we may think, about their political project, direction or it's likely outcome for the country...
The very idea that a regional mayor of an English region is treated by engerland by an unelected official is absolutely disgusting . Total insult to the so called devolved nations . Saor Alba
Lambeth is STILL in a mess
TH-cam, do you think we could watch a podcast without an advert every two seconds? You are making your platform unwatchable. In 9 minutes of podcast we have so far had two adverts.
Entirely controlled by the video uploader.
@@SamUploads420 Any video uploader who puts that many adverts, will lose me as a viewer permanently, and I will not subscribe to their channel. The fightback starts here. Anyone who spends five minutes of their video extolling goods and services likewise.
If he's been advising Starmer all along, he's clearly not as smart or wise as the people Blair had around him before following Bush into the abyss.
That was Alistair Campbell and Peter Mandelson.
You can't blame him for Starmer's problems. He didn't advise, as far as I know, Starmer to take 30 thousand pounds worth of suits and not only take the Taylor Swift tickets but get his picture taken at the show.
@@richierich7609starmer's final sin is stupidity
You can be all preening, interested and serious and describe Morgan as a mysterious man from the "land of the bogs and the little people". Or you could tell an Everywhere tale of a middle class kid from a well known local business family who was going nowhere as a teenager and has ever since been on a mission to prove himself.
Hahaha. Do
You still read the Beezer?
@@eughrologh Great! Super!
Where are those people coming from? As weird as some politicians 😂😂😂 show me your potholes ! 😂😂😂
He sounds deeply awful - everything that is wrong with politics across the world. Deeply scary.
There’s always people like this in politics no matter who’s in power. I don’t think this merits a full show talking about it.
In the description, can you include the guest speakers names?
I'm to the right of the labour party. By that I mean tribune looking rightwards. I know where my rightward tolerance stops and so like many people of my view we'd be described as old labour right. I think McSweeney is in this block. The difference being he has an appreciation for blue labour (as do I), without giving space to that GB news blue labour caricature we've become accustomed to. I think his real power is he gets the sense of meaningful delivery at place. It's about community and the local agenda. That's where I think Labour could make significant changes through giving more power to Mayors.
How do you explain his major contribution to Boris' victory in the 2019 election?
You may know where your rightward tolerance stops (which is highly questionable) but Morgan obviously has no such guardrails.
The Harris campaign has drifted into the centre too
Fascinating but disrupted by the very irritating TH-cam format: get rid of the screen with the microphone, please!
Forget that David Cameron was a Tory in 2010, he as a potential PM managed to negotiate an advantagous Coalition and for five years appeared untouchable in terms of integrity. It was Clegg and the Labour leadership who suffered the most. Even forgetting his daughter in the pub was forgiven by the electorate.
Whoever authored the 2015 manifesto for Cameron, signed up to ending his premiership by the back door, the Brexit referendum damaged the brand and even had he been successful, in terms of remain votes, he would have jumped ship because Johnson, Patel, Davis and Gove were plotting his demise from 2016, on!
Starmer was Corbyn's right hand man who turned into Brutus and fooled the hibernating nation who had turned into Caesar's mourners. Trust Starmer at your peril, a loner without principles is reminiscent of 1936 Germany.
So labour is essentially conservative, all but in name.
in charge of starmers leadership campaign and head of highly influential labour together think tank, when starmers campaign was fined for financial misconduct by the electoral commission. no mention of the campaign chief morgan mcsweeney in the report, the one responsible for the whole campaign, including finances.
So… more nationalism and authoritarianism. Yay.
It could be a case of 'be careful what you wish for'!
Hopefully Starmer, McSweeney & Reeve will be able to create an idea of what they want to do whilst in government......there is a distinct lack of a game plan (vision). The promise (pre-election) that they will continue to do what the Tories were doing - only better - isn't going to work imo.
Surely he can be more helpful to Keir than Seamus was to Jezza.
Considering he got starter in government, he’s already achieved more than milne ever will
@@HomemadeBrownies1 Indeed, whilst undermining LHQ leading upto 2019 GE. Who is Labour, anymore...
Wasn't McSweeney working for Boris for 2 years?
@@biggmick1 nope.
Just why should unelected advisors hold sway over a government.
So... Politicians should only have elected advisors?
@_Stroda no, obviously have advisors but they should be restricted in their actions which would include leaking against party members and M.P.'s
Like the orange
Watch the language!
Still don't understand what MMT are advocating.
The lads got their scalp.
Rosie Duffield: "The people who made the decisions, the people in the inner circle, the influential staff are the same bunch of young men."
Lewis Goodall: "Sue Gray is pretty influential!"
Rosie Duffield: "Yes, but you can see she is having to fight with those young men. We all call them the lads. And they are very influential ... they've been the ones who have briefed against me and other women."
Shows just how ignorant - or wilfully ignorant - Lewis is when it comes to Starmer.
He is the Brexir Red Lines man.
More gossip than journalism. Certainly what would be described as fact adjacent but not outright lies.
And the kibbutz? It only gets better.
SO MENY WITH THE Z LENS
Only heard the intro so far, are his eyesight and hair colour relevant? I ask merely for information.
Why would a readhead care much about the views of the follicularly inferior majority?
A deeply concerning individual at best.
Hmm British politics is different
The most powerful man in politics? From zero to hero?
"he used to wear loose jeans"
The dialogue is painfully out of touch
What do you mean?
anyone who think starmer is his own man is a fool. Labour have always answered to union heads and you could tell that from their day 1 actions - we have a 22bn hole in the budget but were going to give unions literally everything they ask for.
This is pure fantasy pretending to be political journalism.
The new slithering Cummings
You make me sick
In the signing off the presenter states that the current Labour Party will never have ah 1997 style political world , true , but this notion also applies to any current and future Tory / orange party they will never again enjoy ah political world that saw thatcher shift from the most unpopular PM ever ( at that time ) to the years that gave rise to all the Tory philosophies that prospered for ah time until they began to rot our society over the long term
