Tory chaos - Michael Gove on how Cleverly got knocked out of the leadership race

- The Conservative party leadership contest is down to two candidates - and in a last minute upset, yesterday’s frontrunner James Cleverly didn’t make the final cut. It’s fair to say at least some amount of skullduggery has happened in the last 24 hours, where the duplicitousness of Conservative MPs has been on display again. Now Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick go to the members for the final stage. Cindy Yu talks to Katy Balls and The Spectator’s new editor, Michael Gove, about what on earth happened - and what this means for Labour now.

I’m not sure I disagree with a lot of what Michael said. But it’s jarring in the extreme for someone who was a senior minister six months ago to be calling his former colleagues the ‘banter party’. Mate, that’s you
I realise this is a political magazine with a narrow interest in the snakes and ladders of Westminster but some reference to the external indeed existential crises now facing the country would be welcome. And on that Labour are miles off it.
Gove just expecting us to forget everything he got up to in the "Conservative" Party?
No, he's the new editor of the magazine of which TH-cam channel you're watching.
By multiple books from both sides he was One of the most effective ministers they had despite the BS games. Not sure what members they are polling. Kemi only good for opp attack dog.
Exactly, Having that dismal duplicitous little shite as editor confirms I was right to cancel my sub to the Speccie even when the other Scottish gimp Angus was editor.
Who trusts Michael Gove?
Wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
not me
I’m a Labour guy, and a subscriber to the Spectator, but Gove was probably the *only* Tory Minister from 2010-2024 who was effective, thoughtful, and genuinely did deliver positive reform to public services, especially schools. I’m willing to hear him out. He’s a smart guy.
Seems like both sides and multiple PM confirm the same. Despite the BS games.
He's also very funny. When he went back.into the housing department having been off the brief for a few years, he started his first meeting with "now, where were we?".
Insane take
Insane
I agree, he was one of the better ones
You need help or are a Labour plant if you think the gaylord Gove is "effective" and "thoughtful". His education attemted reforms were not bad but he is such a duplicitous and slimy operator.
Don"t encourage old school tories by giving them a platform. They are dead.
Spot on.
?? no one's "giving" Michael Gove a platform -- he's the editor of the Spectator magazine, and this is their channel
And the Nigerian braided ♠ is rumoured to be politically close to Gove - so that is a demerit for me.
It shows how low Tory fortunes have sunk: Michael Gove goes from Tory persona non grata to Tory elder statesman in the course of three months - without his public approval rating changing.
I think Christmas has come early for Michael Gove, he’s got the big job at the Spectator and his protege Kemi Badenoch may now be the next Tory leader
I hope Freddy Gray is still with The Spectator.
He is
I believe, Freddy, is still a British journalist, deputy editor of The Spectator and the primary editor of its US edition, Spectator World.
Really not liking Gove sitting there trying to be a honest broker. Fraser Nelson had credibility because he has always been a commentator, Gove was a player in the game, going into this so quickly I think is a misstep. Editor behind the scenes fine but should not be doing front of camera stuff yet. Plus for this specifically this man was the ultimate game player when he knifed Johnson in 2016.
Fraser Nelson was impartial, I don’t feel Gove can be even if he wants to. He will always be unwittingly biased.
Yes, Labour has got some incredibly difficult choices to make. Who on earth could possibly be to blame for that Michael?
The whitehall bubble, talking about itself to itself. We got Starmer because of this nonsense.
Labour would almost surely have it that Cleverly won. He's the easiest to associate with past Tory governments, and hence with any failings.
As a Labour person, I was most afraid of Cleverly, as I knew Tugenhardt would never make it.
He was by far the one who came across most normal. I don't think his past associations with the general public who don't follow politics would have mattered to be honest.
Just hoping now they elect Kemi, that would then cement 10 years for Labour 😂
@@dangordon8665 You are crying that Cleverly is not though. He was by far the easiest target for that greedy, inept freebie grasper Sir Keir.
Labour is doing a great job at destroying itself.
Rosie Duffield: "How dare you [Sir Keir] take our longed-for victory, the electorate's sacred and precious trust, and throw it back in their individual faces and the faces of dedicated and hardworking Labour MPs?! The sleaze, nepotism and apparent avarice are off the scale. I am so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to tarnish and humiliate our once proud party.
Someone with far-above-average wealth choosing to keep the Conservatives' two-child limit to benefit payments which entrenches children in poverty, while inexplicably accepting expensive personal gifts of designer suits and glasses costing more than most of those people can grasp - this is entirely undeserving of holding the title of Labour Prime Minister.
Forcing a vote to make many older people iller and colder while you and your favourite colleagues enjoy free family trips to events most people would have to save hard for - why are you not showing even the slightest bit of embarrassment or remorse?"
Enough said.
ps, Did Labour supporters elected a Labour government to remove the winter fuel allowance, keep the two child benefit cap, and ditch any social care reform? You happy with that?

He's also the most likely Tory that would attract Labour or middle of the road voters in the country - so of course they were most afraid of him. The other two might grow the Tory vote by taking back from Reform, but that's not going to hurt Labour much.
There is a God, after all, and he has a sense of humour. Gove's on, talking about (checks notes) chaos and division in the Conservative Party.
My theory, is that with the Mauritius business, MPs might have just realised how much baggage Cleverly was burdened by.
Gove as editor? Noooooooooo 😢
I can’t get used to this…
The Labour move on the Chagos islands has highlighted Clevery’s role and I suspect the timing went against him. I do not see this as helping Labour.
I'm a Tory, but I suggest you either become conservative again- or bugger off. How does that sound?
Looks like the Tories want to stay in opposition. Kemi Badenoch may be clever but she seems addicted to striking a pose. Trust me the British people are so over performative politics.
Cleverly seems to have arranged his own demise. I think he looked at the prospect of leading the loony party and decided it was not for him.
It's a democratic vote. I never thought for one minute James Cleverly would make it into the final two. The remaining two are both brilliant politicians.
Both far better than Starmer or Farage for that matter.
Lammy off to China - are they in need of a good laugh?
Kemi needs to win. She will nullify 2 of the labour party's lines of attack. We don't need a business as usual candidate.
The great back stabbed will know how the conspirators messed up!
Dear Michael, Congratulations on you appointment but where is my magazine
I got last weeks magazine today. And he need to sit up straight. Already missing Fraser Nelson 😞
Jimmy Dimly's campaign was doomed the moment loser Can't Shapps became involved.
"Cleverly sounds the most normal" 😂
The candidates like this podcast panel are simultaneously out of touch with reality and irrelevant to it
Hopefully Kemi will win membership vote 👍
I do. It'll be very amusing.
Maybe Cleverly will be the next Spectator editor.
Did Fraser get dumped, just like that? Sound journalist, and a decent man.
Nobody knows for certain
So the centrist candidate gets knocked out, and it's chaos, gotcha.
Free Palestine
This is all bs
Gove is a quisling...
I think Cleverly was the best chance of winning over Labour and Lib Dem voters. Badenoch is an unknown quantity, definitely combative and articulate, but hard to see her winning over people who haven't felt any love for the Tories recently. Jenrick is overrated on what I've seen and Labour will not fear him. I can't see him bringing Reform voters over.
As a Reform voter I would only come back to the Conservatives if Jenrick was leader
@@jmiller7209 yes that why you lot are finished
You’ve got to be joking!!!
Is this still going on?!
Gove is back. Crazy
He's so articulate though, isn't he?
It matters not what they do or who they appoint . They will not be believed and given another chance . They will have to wait until Reform have had power now
One is marginally worse than the other but if the Conservatives believe in a sharp right turn, hopefully neither will last for long enough to win an election
This is brilliant really. Brilliant comedy. Brilliant to get out the Ult Right and slap them from the Con Party for a very long time. Brilliant all round.
Mr Gove, to quote Mr Cameron at the dispatch box to another former Labour leader, “Put on a proper suit, do up your tie and sing the national anthem”. I’m sure Mr Gove can sing the National anthem.
Gove is no Marr
Maybe not , he’s still a very good guitarist though
Badenoch was calling for MORE immigration not to long ago.
WEF aficionado and married to a Deutsche Bank guy. Yuk. At least Jenrick resigned on principle and wants the ECHR gone. But I don't trust any of them. ALL were in a very bad government not so long ago.
She worked for the Spectator and for that reason alone, I'm out.
Seems recently can always count on them to self-sabotage.
Tom was too wet. Cleverly is too business-as-usual. Kemi is incoherent, and desperate.
Jenrick is the only one with a half-decent chance to make a full conversion to proper conservatism. I doubt any one of them will be the leader by the next election.
He is slimy and sleazy, though. Ordinary voters don't like the way he seems entitled and looks down on them. but they are all rubbish.
And he gave planning permission to his mate within a timescale to avoid social housing. Just what the Doctor ordered.
I would have cheered myself up by looking at those Mickey Mouse paintings had some emotionally bankrupt individual not erased them ....
I suspect we'll have a National Government before a new government for a variety of dismaying reasons
@@GeoffV-k1h Probably. That's not say he couldn't become decent and likeable to voters, but I doubt that'll happen within 5 years, if at all.
Favorite loses, was he nobbled, betting scam perhaps?
Oust the LibLabCon party, vote Reform✅
"Kemi is a firecracker" 🧐
Gove is spidery.
It was all about the Bobby Jay hats!
If there is a god, where is he/she?
Michael Gove editor = me unsubscribed ..
Tories.....dead party walking, flat earthers. The Tory leadership election, as relevant and interesting as a cohort of Morris dancers!
I actually rather like Morris Dancers. Boss Morris and Demon Barbers are excellent, revitalised and YOUNG Morris sets.
I used to enjoy watching Spectators' commentary very much. But the deep crisis the Conservatives are in is draging even the Spectator down with them. Not only the leadership contest gives no meaningfull choice but we now have to put up with one of the most politically bankrupt person in history of UK parliament in a role of an chief editor. This marks the lowest point in the long history of Tories. So sad to witness.
An insightful and informed discussion. An opportunity to learn and enjoy top quality political commentators. More please.
Wonderful news. If you expect a different result, do something different. Go Kemi!
Who really cares about the Tory Party anymore ??!!?? Oblivion looms for them I predict, especially with a choice between those two. Will they ever learn?
It seems to me that as Sir Granny Harmer has stolen the centre ground the Tories need to challenge Reform for the centre right.
Far right. Tories can't match the appeal of Farage's open racism, so appealing to Tory voters.
@@GeoffV-k1h What racism?
What centre ground? Starner can't find his shoe laces let alone the centre ground. The political nous of a lettuce ....
The Tory party is split 3 ways. It wo t recover.
Looool england led by an Indian and now an African woman 😂😂😂
Rishi Sunak's parents are from Africa
Sir Keir Starmer self-identifies as an African woman now?
It’s hardly worthy of comment..so what?
@@charleskriswell7938😂
The Nazti Party is back.
@@simonbamford8441 Yawn
Grow up.
The National Socialist German Workers' Party is back?
Best wishes to Michael in the new role. The Spectator is s superb publication with first class journalist and column writers - keep it up!
We Maths Profs predict Robert Jenrick will win as righty voters won't accept an African following Southport tragedy of 9 little angels by Axel R.
Telegraphs Allison Pearson did 4 Cleverly
AP & Portilo are most trusted pundits by female brexiteers.
(Camilla tominey & Mike Graham are most trusted by male brexiteers)
Alison Threatened to join reform if they chose cleverly. See huge comments in Tuesday's article.
Also hundreds of Tory councillors threatening to join ReformUK & annoyed by cleveleys very pro ECHR stance. Tory MPs really fear councillor defections to the Farage insurgency.
We we predicted in May the Tory will end up with 125 MPs. Almost spot on.
