How Keir Starmer's next 100 days could be worse than his first

  • The Morgan McSweeney-Sue Gray saga, endless stories about freebies and gloomy economic forecasts ahead of Rachel Reeve’s first budget - so, how badly have Keir Starmer’s first 100 days gone and could the next 100 actually be worse?
    [Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
On this week’s episode of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by Thangam Debbonaire, who was set to be a leading cabinet minister in Starmer’s government before she lost her seat in a shock result at the election - Faiza Shaheen, who was a rising star in the Labour Party before a public spat led to her running as an independent in July - and Channel 4 News’ senior political correspondent Paul McNamara.

exactly! Resoundly rejected by the electorate, and yet still smug in her own self-righteous believe and overbearing entitlement. Typical left-wing politician so convinced that they are on the side of good, that nothing can shake them, and being rejected by the electorate is just a blip. Some would call that a mental illness

A significant part of Starmer's purge of the left of Labour has been a purge on anyone who has campaigned for Palestine. This inlcuded film-maker Ken Loach and Jewish members of Jewish Voice for Labour such as JVL founder member Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi, who was expelled within days of having been voted onto the NEC.
And Faiza Shaheen herself was deselected as a candidate - why? Because of her support for Palestine.
And no-one in this discussion mentioned the *6 elephants* in the room. *Unless and until:*
*1) The UK joins the EU once more, there CANNOT be economic growth.*
*2) Labour allow much more migration,* the shortfall of around one million skilled and unskilled workers will continue to inhibit/prevent greater productivity and by extension economic growth.
*3) The Labour Government move away from the Neoliberal (Free Market) Economic model to a Keynsian Mixed Economy model,* there cannot be a realistic plan either to repair/replace crumbling infrastructure or to tackle the huge inequality which has been created by Neoliberal policies for the past 4 decades.
*4) The archaic and dysfunctional First Past The Post electoral system is replaced with Proportional Representation (preferrably in tandem with the Single Transferable Vote)* then we cannot have a truly representative democracy, NOR can we have stable government with long-term planning, because a right-wing government will merely come in and tear down anything achieved by a progressive government.
*5) There is Independent Regulation of the press and media - including monopolies of ownership -* misinformation and disinformation will continue to be spread by the right-wing, billionaire owned and contolled press and media. Sadly Starmer agreed with Rupert Murdoch NOT to implement the reconommendations of LEVERSON 2. What a mistake.
*6) The government devises and agrees a Codified (Written) Constitution there are not enough safeguards for the UK's democracy. There is the ever-present danger of an extreme populist government to turn the UK into a one-party authoritarian state.

But now they are paying attention to what they elected (well, 33.7% of them did) and they don't like it much....especially Champagne Starmer. The more people of see him the less they like him. Personally I would prefer a wealth tax on anyone with over 10m in assets like the Greens have proposed. However it does make sense to tax capital gains at the same rate as income because if your income is say from dividends only you are most likely wealthier than most and paying tax at a lower rate than most

I reckon Debbonaire is going to become more and more disliked by Bristol Central after this conversation. As for not being at the cabinet table. She's demonstrated how bitter she is for losing.
And when labours position on Israel Palestine was brought up, she really didn't understand why people are sick to death of Starmer.
Nor was housing discussed, which is a massive issue in Bristol. What's she got to say about labours woeful action on housing? Nothing about rent controls, no fault evictions, higher council tax on people with multiple properties? I can't see Starmer doing any of the things.
All they talk about is building more homes, all relying on private equity to deliver. Private equity that only gives a shite about quick bucks and selling debt. Not decent affordable homes and community programs.

Labour la la land. "I voted for a ceasefire with Starmer" - that will have a huge impact for both sides because they have such a huge international influence. I wonder if the Labour representative went to Athens on Alli airlines on a Waheed package deal.
Labour did not make difficult choices, they made deliberate cuts targeting the vulnerable. Starmer got on his knees to appease the well paid in Unions & they will keep him on his knees with more unreasonable demands - he will be viewed as a weak, sycophantic cash cow to be constantly milked.

Strange that the Tories chap on this program left out the Chagos Islands fiasco but that might be due in part to the fact that it was James Cleverly that opened up talks over the Islands, in the first place.
However, as an ardent fan of Yes Minister and the sequel Yes Primeminister, it seems clear to me that civil servants are often those that are responsible for opening these cans of worms and that ministers often end up as the scapegoats when and if anything goes wrong.
