  • Here is my translation and performance of the one and only Palästinalied in Latin. I’m using ecclesiastical pronunciation in true Catholic fashion. Again, I’ve tried to keep to the rhyming signature while not changing the meaning (too much), and I’m quite pleased with how it’s turned out. Let me know what you think!
Many thanks to Louis for looking over my translation and his suggestions.

    Lyrics:
    Prīmā vice vīvō vērē
    quia ego peccātor videō
    nōbilitātem huius terrae
    cui tantus honor datur; ideō,
    opus noster maximus:
    ad locum illum vēnimus
in quem ut homo ībat Deus.
    Terrae pulchrae et dīvitēs,
    sicut alibī vīdī.
    Tū honor omnium eōrum es.
    Tālia mīrācula hīc!
    Ex Virgine nātus est
    angelōrum omnium Rex.
    Haec hominis cāra prex!
    Hīc baptizātus est, Pūrus,
    ut hominēs sint pūrī.
    Ibi Dominus vēnditus,
    ut servī sīmus līberī.
    Aliōquin perditī fuerimus!
    Avē, Hasta, Spīna, Crux!
    Vae pāgānīs! Vōbīs vulnus!
    Ad īnferōs dēscendit Fīlius
    ex sepulcrō in quo positus.
    Quia Pater comes illīus
    aeternus est; et Spīritus.
    Non dīvidentur; sunt ūnum!
    Rēctiōrēs quam spīculum!
    Sic appāruit Ābrahae iūdaeōrum.
    Ibi Diabolum humiliāvit;
    melius quam Imperātor pugnāvit.
    Iter ad hanc terram fēcit.
    Tunc dolor iūdaeōrum coepit:

If your argument is that it’s authoritarian because the Catholic Church uses it, then I guess every language is authoritarian as every language can be tied to at least 1 religion.

Im reading this, with my 2 years of highschool Latin, and 2 semesters of Latin in University, and I am seriously in awe! Latin poetry is HARD and you nailed it, not only in capturing the original's meaning, but you also nailed fitting the poetic structure and rhyme scheme of a song written in one language, and shoehorning into another
None of this was easy, and you excelled with it1

I really enjoyed listening to this. It sounds very authentic and the Latin is largely accurate, which is a rare occurrence on TH-cam. I hope that I will not offend in any way if I should offer a few points on the lyrics?
    1. I believe that 'opus' is neuter, singular, nominative, so not 'opus noster maximus' but rather 'opus nostrum maximum'. I appreciate that it looks like a second declension masculine noun because it terminates with -us, but I am quite certain that it is third declension neuter, so there is a case agreement issue here.
    2. I believe that 'in quem' means 'into which', but 'where' or 'in which', with the sense of something happening IN a place, would be conveyed by 'in quo': 'in quo ut homo ibat Deus'.
    3. Be mindful of the sequence of tenses in purpose clauses. The perfect tense, when used as the simple past tense in the main clause, must be followed by an imperfect subjunctive verb in the purpose clause.
    So instead of:
'Hic baptizatus est, Purus, ut homines sint puri.'
    Use:
'Hic baptizatus est, Purus, ut homines essent puri.'
If the perfect tense is used as the true perfect tense however (i.e. 'Here he HAS been baptised') then the purpose clause would use a present subjunctive.
    4. The other side of my second comment: since the verb 'positus est' has the connotation of motion inherent in the idea of placing or laying someone into a grave, I think that the line should be 'ex sepulcro in quod positus'. The idea is that the accusative case relates the idea of motion towards or into; the ablative case relates the idea of movement away from or a lack of motion.
Please let me know what you think! Latin is my passion, so I cannot help but analyse everything :)

    Latin:
    Hic baptizatus est, Purus
    Ut homines sint puri
    Romanian:
    Aici botezat este, puru
    Ca oameni sunt puri
    Latin:
    Ibi Dominus venditus
    Ut servi sumus liberi
    Romanian:
    Unde Domnu (a fost) vândut
Ca noi servi sa fiim liberi
Romanian is the romance language with the closest grammar to that of Latin. Most times sentences can be translated word for word, and they will still make sense.
For example when Caesar, or rather Shakespeare, said "Et tu, Brute?", we Romanians know exactly what he meant by that. In Romanian that would be "Și tu, Brute?", even though his name was Brutus, and not Brute.
That's because both Latin and Romanian have noun cases, where a noun gets changed to change its meaning. Having the vocative case is such a useful thing. I don't get why every other romance language lost it. Brute is often translated as Oh Brutus in both Spanish and English, but that just doesn't really convey the same meaning.
Both Romanian and Latin also had the genitive case (English has it too, in a way, when you add 's at the end of noun like "It is Johnny's"
In my translation to Romanian I've deliberately used synonyms that are often not used, or with the wrong verb tense, just to make a point.
For example, although servi is a word that exists, servitori is most often used instead.
Also, in Romanian the sentence Hic baptizatus est, Purus uses a different verb tense.
In Latin, from my PhD in Latin language and the fact that I'm actually a Roman legionaire from 2000 years ago, I think they use the present tense "est" and "sint" which in Romanian would be este and sunt.
But normally in Romanian you'd use the past forms a fost and sa fie.
Also the Latin sentences seem to skip the word for to be sometimes, like when saying Ibi Dominus venditus which means Where the lord WAS sold, with the verb to be, which is also used in Romanian and Spanish but apparently not in Latin.
Curiously, since Romanian is an Eastern romance language and Spanish is a western romance language, many of the sound shifts that Romanian underwent, Spanish didn't, and viceversa, so whereas in Romanian you'd say vândut, in Spanish you'd say vendido, which sounds closer, but in Spanish you'd say libres, and in Romanian it's liberi which is exactly the same word.
I'm pretty sure you could write down sentences using both Romanian and Spanish words that looked pretty much indistinguishable from vulgar Latin at the time.
    Salve, fraților mei latini.

    • @ericthegreat7805
      @ericthegreat7805 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

As a bilingual English and French speaker I noticed that the present tense is more commonly found when recounting past events in French. For example "Il arrive le 5 octobre 1232 au milieu de la Croisade" literally means "He arrives the 5th october 1232 in the middle of the Crusades" yet in English it would normally be, like in Romanian, in the past tense: "He arrived".
