Optoma HD20 Basic Teardown Repair

  • My bulb finally popped at around 4,200 hours on the OEM bulb. I've learned the hard way that you should never let your bulb get to the point of popping. Not only do I need a new bulb but I also need a new color wheel for my Optoma HD20. Shard of color wheel picture: i.imgur.com/UyA...
If you do this it's a good idea to clean out both fans on the unit (heat build up can cause your color wheel to mess up and flicker).

    GREAT TUTORIAL!!!
I know you're not a mind reader but here is my Question:
I recently replaced my bulb with one that I bought on line but am still getting the same amber & or red lights. Is it safe to assume that this replacement bulb is defective? Or could I have bigger problems?

4200 Hours... That's unlucky... I desperately need to change my bulb, it's at 9300hours and counting. Granted I ran it on Econo mode for it's entire life, only now am I putting it under bright as with age, the bulb is... not as bright as it used to be.
Just Lazy, it's ceiling mounted and it's going to be such a pain to undo and redo it.
Nice video BTW, in 30 seconds you showed me what I need to do to change my lamp.

There is no lens on those bulbs. What you have there is exactly what a new one looks like

Thanks but you missed the part about removing the lens from the front. It's sticking out and keeping the top cover on. How do we remove that? I have a HD180 (same PJ) that blew a bulb prematurely and I think the color wheel is fine cause the front glass/filter on the bulb assembly is just cracked but not broken, so nothing hit the color wheel, but there are glass bits all inside my projector and I need to open it to inspect and clean it before I decide on ordering a new bulb.

You don't remove the lens from the projector.
You pop off the cap and the fine focus sleeve (as shown in the video).
It literally pops off, "All you have to do is pop off this cap".

Nick Larson OK, I saw that, but I pulled and was afraid to pull hard. I just pull a bit harder straight out?

Me too. My HD25 cap doesn't seem to pop off. I want to take the top and bottom covers off to spray paint a darker color as my home theater will have a dark ceiling. That front grey lens part seems pretty tough to "pop" off.

    Hey Nick,
I hope you can help me?
I've got an estimate of $384.00 to REPAIR the LIGHT ENGINE of my Optoma hd20. I love my projector but it's 8 years old.
Here is the issue: IT WORKS GREAT THE 1st 10 MINUTES, but AFTER THAT IT GETS BLURRY. THERE IS A NEW BULB NEW COLOR WHEEL INSTALLED IN
    THE PROJECTOR.
    What are your thoughts?
    Thanks a bunch!!!

Mason I have a Optoma HD27 and have took all the screws out but it seems there is something in the Center that will not let me remove the top any advice. Need to change color wheel.

Any advice? I took mine apart to clean it, and it went fine, connected it back up and i have what seems like 2 slight circles next to each other in the image!
Like something is on the lense? I never touched the lense though..
Im thinking dust could have gotten onto somewhere as i was cleaning it but i really do not understand what has happened.

    hey,
how do you release the silver ribbon that keeps the top "cap" from the motherboard?
because its stuck at both sides and dont want to break it!
    thank you

      @NickLarson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

I can't remember off the top of my head. but there are 2 main types of ribbon connectors on this unit.
One type is a simple slide in/out ribbon.
The other had a flip down latch to keep it securely in place.

Johan Smit just watched the video in slow-motion and looks like this is the flip down latch type :)
