Optoma HD20 Vertical Line Fix

  • My projector started displaying vertical lines on the screen. I am not a professional in the least bit and I advise anyone doing this themselves to do their own research but hopefully this helps see the inners of the HD20. Besides, my projector was out of warranty and I have my eye on a new one :)

You sir are a steely eyed missile man!
I ordered a new bulb for my 15 year old HD20 and after installation the vertical lines showed up. I figured something was wrong with the lamp but when I put the old lamp back in, same issue. Figured before I ditch the old projector and buy a new one I'd search the webs, and Voila! Found this detailed video on fixing the vertical line issue. Brilliant!
Popped my HD20 apart (breaking the same plastic catch that you did of course!), cleaned the contacts with vinegar followed by alcohol swabs and bingo! Projector works great again!
Many thanks for putting in the effort to help a great many folks! Really appreciated!

Ryan! this video was the best! Saved our museum tons of money and fixed our optoma like brand new! Really appreciate people like you helping those of us who otherwise would be suckered into paying tons of skrill for something that was easily accomplished with our own two hands!

We had the vertical lines happen years ago. I put the squeeze on it a few times and then one day it went away and stayed away for a few years. I even changed the bulb at 4,132 hours a few months back and it was still okay. And then, tonight, they came back! Anyhow thanks for helping me remember where to squeeze on it. If it keeps coming back I'll definitely be patiently taking it apart and cleaning it. Great video!

This video helped me fix my Optoma HD20 with vertical white lines, and as far as I can tell, I didn't break anything (important) while taking it apart and putting it back together. Excellent work, sir.

billion of thanks sent from Saudi Arabia to you Ryan. Your video solved my problem. I was so upset when I saw the line crossed my screen and had contacted Optoma services, and said I had to mail it to them to fix it or replace it with a "Grade-A refurbished one." I followed your instructions and fixed it. So lucky I came a cross your video.

I got vertical lines on my (NEC) projector when I still had 97% bulb life!
Thanks to your detailed instructions, I went out and bought Deoxit, opened up the case, and did the job. 1 hour of work, still have my $100. Now I'm writing this, connected to the projector with NO LINES! I'm pleased as hell to join you many happy commenters!

Many Thanks. Just a note: 12:03 here you can actually spray electrical contact cleaner in to the black socket near the guy's left hand's thumb. You can use a toothbrush with rubbing alcohol to clean the dirt from the pins on the DMD board.

Thank you VERY Much. I have an HD200X-LV (same thing really but black)
I had the vertical lines 6 months after purchase of it refurb, and fixed it by pressing in the magic spot. fast forward 7 years and 2 lamps later... vertical lines keep coming and the pressing trick can only give me a few hours... never resolves anymore and here is where I found your basic walkthrough. Thanks for the good memories on the 16Bit music!!!!
I cleaned my connector with a bit of WD40... didn't have anything else and if I break it... ill just get a newer better once. But now working perfectly on a new cheap amazon lamp which I hope it lasts longer then the previous, which exploded after 2800 hours. (The OEM lasted 9000 Hours)
This one seems to be superior to the previous cheap one tho.

Hi. Just wanted to say thanks for the vid. 2018 and still useful. I inherited the HD20 with a house purchase and got a years use before the vertical lines appeared so I was happy to say easy come, easy go. But I followed your instructions to press the case - and the whole thing went black the bulb replacement light came on, and I got an early night!
Next day I did the full clean and it’s all in full working order again. Many thanks.

Very useful tips! The fast fix of pressing the top area, even if it's temporary. With about $50 to buy a new one these days, I don't feel like going through all the labor to take it apart. This fast solution should be good enough for me before my Optoma HD65 serves to its end of life.

Thanks for the video man. I was having a hell of a time getting my HD25e apart and was positive I was doing something wrong until I watched you struggle with it too :)
For posterity, I used rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to clean the contacts and it worked fine. Also, there's a lot of screws, so people might consider taking pictures at various steps along the way to remember which screws go where and at what stage of the reassembly.
    Thanks again!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!! Out of nowhere my Optima HD70 started to do this and it is old as i bought it from bestbiy back in March of 2007 but I replaced the color wheel, and both blower fans inside of the HD70 all with 100% OEM parts which are no longer being made and got a brand new OEM bulb that only has 412 hours in it. Sure enough giving it a light press to the buttons area and it fixed the issue. It looks like my projector will be coming to an end once the color wheel and fan blower motors go out again. Still looks great even in October 2018 😁

It is also possible that spray is not needed at all. I think Sony ERS-7 robot dogs have similar problem with the battery contacts. Our "fix" for the robots is to disconnect/reconnect the battery 10 times clean the contacts. Maybe similar procedure can clean these contacts also. I have a HD25e and luckily did not have this problem yet. :)

    Hello.
immediately excuse my English "terrible" ...
I have your same projector and the same problem a few years ago.
Also, last summer, is the lamp exploded, and created even more problems to the wheel color.
I replaced both lamp color wheel and since then I have been using the projector with the problem (intermittent) of the vertical lines.
Last week it appeared a dark halo is on the right side of the image.
I thought it was the lamp again and then I replaced it again ...... I have not solved the problem ....
I have a couple of pictures to show you but I do not know how.
Do you think that might need to be cleaned as contacts in your video?
    thank you.

Why not use an old credit card and slowly move it along the groove in the case halves?..Much better than prising it open with a screwdriver and won't mark or chew the plastic!..Another useful tool is a propelling fibreglass pen for cleaning pcb edge connectors. I love the “it’s a known defect” but we as the company will not fix it unless you pay us’ 😂
If it’s a known defect that means they should honor it and repair their product!
When they don’t stand behind their product … that’s says everything you need to know!
There’s a big difference between I broke it fiddling around and a “known defect” wouldn’t expect them to fix it if I broke it …

Any suggestions you could give me? My HD20 is about 5 years old. Ceiling mounted, limited use (maybe 6 hours/month) - let's say under 500 hours on the high side. I started getting colour problems last week, where picture worked but was too green. Then it would flicker back to normal. Today, a show went green and stayed that way. Today, it won't turn on. I get the blinking light error that the manual shows as "dead bulb". But I don't know how a dying bulb would make the picture green lately. Does this seem like a simple bulb fix?

+tanbrolo its not. you have a color wheel issue. A slow or out of alignment color wheel will act like a bulb issue. The lamp light does not mean the lamp is bad. it only means the lamp is not being lit. In your case, the color wheel is not being behaved correctly and the projector is shutting itself down to protect itself. Clean or replace the color wheel and then you should be fine.

+Rostit Thanks for the info, and you're 100% right. I actually fixed my projector and it was a color wheel issue. It was just full of dust and not spinning properly. Cleaning the wheel fixed it.

+tanbrolo Sweet! You would be surprised the amount of DLP projectors that get replaced due to that issue. I recommend cleaning them inside and out at least once a year, more often if its reasonable. Enjoy it!
