I firmly believe that Montserrat Caballe' is grossly underrated. She was amazing, truly amazing! We will never heard something like this again. For sure she's having a coffee with Callas, Sutherland, and others in heaven, laughing of what opera has become today. Brava Caballé...la superba! Thanks for the compilation.
One of my favorite interviews with Caballe is when she's speaking of how dear a friend and mentor Callas was for her. And apparently they were already laughing about the silly things people would say about them.
Lovely Caballe, forever, in so many of her very best surprises of her splendid 'Bella voce' with her floating lirica-spinto notes and always that trademark of pianissimo so deliciously commanded. How the stars are so lucky to have her in the heavens, now. Our lives felt triumphant with her arching of transcendence musical lines. How the opera houses feel empty, now. Brava Montserrat! 🌹💖
The peak of bel canto, like a baccarat crystal. Caballe´s Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini heroines are sublime! Caterina Cornaro, Parisina, Stuarda, Elisabetta, Straniera, Norma, Pirata, Lucrezia, Agnese, Donna del Lago, Gemma. I'd include her Sancia, Bolena and Semiramide if she hadn't performed them slightly passed her prime.
I too wish the conductors were consistently identified. Knowing who the conductor is will often impact whether I will take the time to listen to Sutherland. I love her pre-Bonynge or non-Bonynge recordings. Her 1959 Lucia with Serafin is outstanding and unparalleled.
That Roberto Devereux performance... wow. Absolutely astonishing - I mean, her singing is mystical superhuman divinity, as usual, but the *characterization* is just astounding. The level of commitment, the live excitement... as if she could have been any more extraordinary. She was the greatest singer of the 20th century, and it's not even close. Some day everyone will agree with me. ;)
Thank you, Marx! What loveliness! As one who vocalizes, I envy her breath support. We vocalists know that it takes better breath support to sustain a pianissimo note than a forte note. I often think of Montserrat when I consider the debate about Callas losing much of her weight and its possible effect on her singing. In the end, it matters not. Each makes their own choice. They have both given us unique gifts that will live forever.
Truly glorious. I really appreciated one of the other commenters who so graciously responded to the silliness of comparison....of any of the great artists. They left a testament in their live performances and studio works. I am wowed everytime I hear this woman (though I do prefer her earlier works ;-)
and her "In quelle trine morbide!" A raphaelesque beauty, in both music and body!! Be gone our contemporary "body beautiful!" And out, out, damned spot...Another great Caballe moment.
@@purisermonisamator Pardon my last response. I sent before finished. Many people comment so freely and with such suggested expertise on these great singers and their individual or stylistic peculiarities and unique approaches to music - as though everything the singer under discussion (inquisition) does should be suspect. The Sutherland/Callas claques that continue to this day are tiresome and illumine the person making the comment, rather than revealing anything important about the singer. The comments are "silly" not because we shouldn't have preferences, but because they tend to self-promote the listener as a final source. Many of the singers discussed in such a manner were (are) world-class artists. They deserve a respect for such tremendous efforts and unique gifts. That's what I meant by "silly comparisons." Best regards. As an example, thank goodness we can hear So many different interpretations of Donizetti's Queens, Rossini's Figaro, Verdi's Don Carlo, and the list goes long.
This is perfect repertory for her voice, and she sings with great dramatic intention as well. (And Callas didn’t sing these roles, which keeps the comparisons to a minimum.) I just wish that she didn’t add all those H’s to the coloratura passages.
Callas was not wrong about her, she really saw that Montserrat would be become one of the most significant sopranos to ever grace opera. BRAVA!

unique!!!
What Elvira de Hidalgo said of Callas was true of Caballe; "... tutto, tutto, tutto...." she had it all!
Once I heard it takes three lives to be a perfect opera singer. She did it all in one
She's simply fantastic.
This woman is just astounding and I thought I’d heard all her best Donizetti Queens but this early version of Roberto Devereux tops them all!
