And this is 1984 which is very late for her! What a miraculous night she had that evening my god, and with the South of France wind blowing like hell...
I don’t know much about the mentioned crisis but for all intent and purpose she switched her fach and repertory from a lyric-spinto bel cantista to dramatic soprano and verismo. It seems to me her voice paid the price. Those were the years of lots of Turandots, Toscas and Giocondas.
@@NLidar , i red in the biography of Robert Pullen and Stephen Taylor about Caballé that she had in this time many healthy issues like operation of kidney stones and a food poisoning which affected her Anna Bolena at La Scala (she did just one performance after canceled first ones for that). The writers of the biography were very busy to point out the healthy issues as the reason for some vocal problems. And maybe this was a reason too. But that was also the period of many Turandots, some Wagner and very much stuff around, she had also laryngitis. The writers were also very busy with point out how fabulous she was as Turandot, even better and more secure than Birgit Nilsson. And that is, I'm sorry for that, Bullshit. I love Caballé, she was fantastic and a vocal wonder in her prime but she was not a high dramatic soprano, she was lyric with some lyrico spinto qualities. Of course she was not a Birgit Nilsson as Turandot. She was overstrained in this period and had some healthy issues also in this period. Some things came together there.
@@Sir.Larselot I agree, it was a combination of some quite serious health issues (she was treated for a brain tumour in 1985) and some unwise rep. I think singing Semiramide, Norma, Turandof and Gioconda into the early 80s really did rob the voice of the purity and vocal health she could've retained in her later years. But Caballe was a risk taker for sure, some paid off, some definitely did not but that's the musical life.
@@jmiller05 , indeed. And on the other hand i enjoy her Turandot in a different way much more than the versions of all this screaming heavy Wagner divas with her metallic, sharp voices and the monstrous wobble in it. A little bit you should have an idea of a very beautiful ice princess for which all the men risk their life in the three riddles. I think the most impressing Turandot sopranos were Callas (for her endless abilities to acting with her voice) and Maria Slatinaru, the great Romanian soprano for her perfect and unbelievable beautiful sounding spinto soprano. Check her out, there is a full Turandot performance with stunning cast in a concert here on TH-cam. Regards :)
I am presuming that this is from a performance in Orange. If so, Caballe gave that audience yet another superb caracterization in addition to her Normas several years prior. Fabulous!
Be still my heart!
I think the audience really liked that performance. Can you imagine what it must have felt like to be there?
And this is 1984 which is very late for her! What a miraculous night she had that evening my god, and with the South of France wind blowing like hell...
This night is unforgettable
Not only technically superb, but also superb dramatically
This is why she was La Superba
Orange Roman theater I presume (because of the wind),the place she gave her best in many occasions
The empress of pianissimos! OMG what a loss to the opera world!
This is her last Elisabetta fom Don Carlo, since the vocal crisis of 1982 the best she sang when she was no longer in her prime, still did bewitch
Could you tell us more about the vocal crisis of 1982? Did it have to do with Anna Bolena at La Scala?

Don Carlo, Act 2: "Non pianger, mia compagna" (Elisabetta).

It striked me so much the queen of Spain have attended a soprano's funeral. Now I can see. Caballé was royal too.

Να είσαι καλά, φίλε μου.
