- in todays Bali money matters travel video vlog I will provide information on everything you need to know about changing money & using an ATM in bali.
ABOUT ME: I have 12 years experience of living in Bali and first started visiting Bali in 2001, during this time I have amassed a huge amount of useful knowledge of bali & Indonesia. I speak from real life experiences of my own and I share my knowledge in this video to prepare you for your holiday in bali.
MOST IMPORTANT TO ME: I want you to obtain the best possible experience from your holiday in bali, the last thing I want to see is tourists visit bali and leave with a bitter taste in their mouths due to a bad experience related to a bali currency exchange or ATM skimming.
EVERTHING IN THIS VIDEO: All content in this video is to provide you with a guide and prepare you for your holiday in bali. nothing from this video should be taken negatively. I am a seasoned traveler for over 20 years and have encountered many of the same situations outlined in this video in many other countries I have visited around the world.
1: Bali Airport Exchanges offer lower money exchange rates than those offered by the Authorized money changers located in all the main tourist areas.
2: only use authorized money changers, all the authorized money changers I show in this video all offer the exact same exchange rates on all currencies and that is the maximum rate available to tourists whom wish to exchange money. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THAT YOU EXCHANGE AT BOARDS OFFERING HIGHER EXCHANGE RATES AS YOU WILL NOT GET THE RATE ADVERTISED ON THE BOARD.
3: BEST TIME TO EXCHANGE: Monday 10:00am -Friday 15:00pm, weekend exchange rates are considerably lower.
4: Be very careful when using ATM machines as bali is renowned for card skimming (I speak from my own personal experience of this). best to use ATM machines attached to a bank branch rater than using single cubical style ATM machines located on the side of a quiet street.
5: ALWAYS COUNT & CHECK YOUR MONEY BEFORE LEAVING THE EXCHANGE. IF USING THE LITTLE WHITE BOARD MONEY CHANGERS COUNT YOUR MONEY AND CHECK IT MATCHES THE RATE ADVERTISED AND DO NOT LET THE TELLER TOUCH YOUR MONEY AGAIN.
6: if exchanging large sums of money then best to use an authorized money exchange that has an electronic counting machine behind the counter so you can see visually the correct amount.
I WISH YOU ALL A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY IN BALI. I HOPE THIS VIDEO IS OF SOME USE TO ANYONE WATCHING.
Thanks a lot Gary. Ooh lala, what a great video! I showed this video to my IB students (currency/ foreign exchange in action). Anyway, when you shot the video (15/6/2024 I think I saw it in the video) I was either still at the airport or somewhere in Denpasar, having just arrived from Kuala Lumpur 😅 it was my first visit to the magical Bali. Stayed in Ubud. I will be in Bali again March 2025.
@@norsafrimanabdrahman270 glad to hear you find the video useful🙂
@@balibygary9718 Gary thank you for sharing. A friend told me to use the ATMs in BNI or others in the airport if you have a card that dont charge fee i.e. transferWise because you will get the interbank FX nt the one on the board, would you know about this?
I'll be pointing all friends, family and first time Bali travelers to this Gary. I explain it the best I can, but seeing it all in your video is golden.

Maybe in the future i will cover these subjects.
Do you need your passport to change bank notes ( uk notes) at the money changers or can i use a photo copy ?
Thanks for the help and advice Gary 👍🏻
@@jeetley some places ask for passport some places don't. Not sure if they will accept a photo copy of passport or not.
Great Video with important information. I am bit confused when you said that exchange rates applied on ATM withdrawals are not as great. Are you saying that exchanging US dollar cash at authorized money changers will get me better exchange rate than ATM withdrawals?
I don't know which is better exchage rates at atm or money changer. But using an atm you will have charges from the bank in bali & your country bank and the maximum withdrawl at most bank atm machine is 1.5 million per transaction whereas changing money you can exchange as much as you want with no commission fees. I have an indonesian bank account. Permata bank has a maximum of 3 million withdrawl rate per transaction at some atm machines.
I remember in the 80’s, one Australian dollar was only 1000rp. When it climbed to 1450rp, I raced out & brought a heap in case it fell back down, but I actually lost as it climbed well over 2000rp and over the months it kept going up. I still remember a good copy hat costing 1000rp and same as a t-shirt. The old matahari story that was near waterbom where the old masssive mcdonalds was, you could buy shorts with a shirt for $2.80 Australian. We would only wear the clothes we had worn on the plane but on the return, our cases would be full of the good clothing that would last years, including 501 levis costing $5 but at the time, in Australia costing $50 or more. The good old days before large shopping malls. We were at the opening of the Discovery mall in the 90’s as we were staying next to it at the kartika discovery. It was a big deal back then with all the major brands of the day having a shop like nike etc. most are gone, just as we will see CK and others slowly disappear from Bali icon.
People will get a rude shock if the Australian dollar goes down. My husband and I have been going to Bali since 1988.
How far Gary would you say to walk into Sanur town from Puri santrian resort3
Puri santrian is close to many restaurants, shops & popular supermarket. Central sanur (artasedana supermarket) is 1.7km
Whether the ATM located in Airport and one located in a convinience store or attached to a branch apply same exchange rate. Any idea ?
I cannot answer that question sorry as I have an indonesian bank account
Monday to fri are the lowest or sat sun. Im confused. By lowest u mean we will get less on exchange?
We arrive by 12noon monday.
So you are saying airport is the cheapest rate?
Is it advisable to change to IDR and if yes how much for say a 10days trip or dollars are better?
@@macsan1234 monday - friday change money from 10:30am - 15:00pm after 15:00pm rates go lower until the following morning. Weekend rates are the lowest until monday morning 10:30am. Airport offers lowest rates compared to money exchangers on the street, look at the comparison in the video
Is all US credit card accepted as payment in Bali? Is it better to use credit card or cash? Thanks
Credit & debit cards are accepted at many places however they do charge in bali for using an international credit/debit card
@14:52 that atm you mentioned not to use is a Commonwealth bank atm, Commonwealth is one of the largest banks in Australia, does that mean it’s a fake? Commonwealth actually has dedicated atm’s in Bali with affiliation to Indonesian banks. Thanks for the advice
@@Suroyfamilia it does not matter what bank the atm belongs to it is the location of the atm and that the atm has a booth style covering and is not attached to a bank. I recommend you only use atm machines attaced to a bank or inside a indomaret, alfamart, circle k convenience store.
Last month I noticed that all the money changers had horrible rates for those wanting to change Thai Baht into Rupiah. The official rate is about 450 Rupiah per 1 Baht but I saw most places only offering 300 Rupiah for 1 Thai Baht. In other words you were giving up 1/3 of the value of your money. I mostly used ATMs to withdraw money from my US Bank account and the rates were pretty decent.
Yes rates now on the street are considerably lower than what they were prior to the pandemic. It used to be 0.45 under the base rate now it is a few hundred. I don't know now what is best if to exchange money or use atm and pay the charges?
Having worked in Int'l Banking for quite a few years, exchanging cash via a money changer is preferable to withdrawing cash from an ATM.
Gary, your videos are no nonsense, no fluff, no influencer bs-just telling it like it is. Thank you 🙏🙏
Are atm in airport ok ?
@@jade17l yes ok but there are charges from your country bank & the indonesian bank for using atm
@@balibygary9718 thank you ☺️
I was scammed here in the shop ones where notes were skimmed to the drawer
Is there a limit on money to exchange?
@@michellebenjamin992 i don't think so , authorised money changers should be able to change as much money as you need to change.
Is there restaurant Arabic or turkey ?
Yes have both Arabic & Turkish restaurants in bali. Al jazeerah signature sunset road is a nice Arabic restaurant
Hello guys am asking anyone who can help me change money frome Indonesia
Circle K can be trusted
Hi Gary.
What is the best rate you have ever seen USD vs Rupiah?
In one of your videos I think one of the signs said 16,5k.
Could be a scammer of course.
I don't remember best usd rate. there are many more scam money changers than official money changers
@@balibygary9718 It's so bad for Bali's reputation.
The authorities should wake up and do something about it.
Not just the talking😣
Hi Gary, great advice on withdrawing $ from banks/atm's in Indonesia. Is it true a foreigner must have a KITAS to open a bank act @Permata Bank? U crack me up about the "dark corner" ATM. Thanks 4 all u do!
I don't have kitas, but not sure what the rules are now for opening accounts at permata. Permata has many bule customers but it is not a great bank for service best is BCA
@@balibygary9718 Thanks. Are traveler's checks still cashed in Indonesia or is everything digital or cash? My concern is losing US ATM card & trying to replace it in Bali. Charles Schwab debit card will refund charges for international transactions.
