very frustrating when people just write this guy off as an mtv pop star. he's such an amazing guitarist/singer/songwriter, its only a matter of time before his reputation is sealed as one of the greats in blues
I just saw this 6 yrs later sorry. But I found a full version of John from 7 yrs ago and as I said. I had no idea he did the whole song. I copy pasted it. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html
Mayer is without a doubt, one of the best guitarists on the planet, and he is quick to pay repsects and homage to his blues forefathers. I'm not a huge fan of his singing (nor the way he looks when he sings, but he has done some correcting of the "birdmouth"), but his writing is where he really shines. Playing great guitar is one thing...writing great material is quite another. This kid will be around for a LONG time....
The guy who runs this Utube keeps deleting my post here’s a full version of John playing the ghetto and a mashup with a Michael Jackson song. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html
I'll fill in the parts I know for sure... 1:14-1:33 John Mayer - No Such Thing 1:55-2:11 Eric Clapton - Old Love 2:17-2:58 Donnie Hathaway - The Ghetto 3:03-END sounds a lot like a BB King blues tune, not sure what it is though.
1:56 this is right when heavier things came out.. and yet he plays a riff very similar to i don't trust myself (with loving you), which came out three years later. foreshadowing i guess.
Letterman had the best Band in late night history led by Paul Shaffer. 2nd place definitely goes to The Max Weinberg 7 from Conans Late Night NBC show.
@MrBearmanification ah, hence the old love he sings when they come back from commercial. nice. thank you for the most insightful reply i've ever gotten on youtube. (seriously) I'm going to watch that other video now, much appreciated.
I agree that it's the end of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Empty Arms" at 0:58. 0:00-0:23 is just John soloing over the usual opening tune Shaffer's band plays as Letterman walks to his desk. I think we covered all the bases here except that last tune, which is really bugging me! Please drop a reply if you know what it is--it may even be just him noodling around.
@wagstaff11 I only know two versions: the original by Donny Hathaway and the jazz version by George Benson (john mayer play this version at the video)... Love it... Hugs from BraziL!!
@Cheftee it's actually a song called "Old Love" by Eric Clapton which he's covering. You're right though, it's a very similar feel. Listen to Mayer's cover of it on youtube, insane stuff.
"the kid can play"
understatement of teh century
Guitarist left to John was so impressed by that super lick at 2:29 he almost forgot to sing! Great lick for the record.
Lol 😂
Sid McGinnis. Great little moment.
I revisit this video for that lick especially
John Mayer, along with the great Hendrix(RIP) and the almighty Clapton made me love the Stratocaster
Omg his guitar always sounds so nice
not only is he able to play any style he wants to, john also comes always up with such juicy tones for his guitars... it's amazing
John looks unsatisfied every time they stop the performance. Amazing musician no doubt.
wow i loved watching htis. It really reinforces how smooth and cool a blues guitarist JM is
he's got some killer licks
Man, John Mayer needs to do a full-length cover of The Ghetto. Those were some crazy hot licks he had going there.
There is the guy keeps deleting my post. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html.
Are you still alive? He did one
Mayer: legend in the making.
Update :- He IS a legend now!
2:27 Like a boss!
My favorite lick!
Brandon Look What song is that? The lick is awesome
always a boss
very frustrating when people just write this guy off as an mtv pop star. he's such an amazing guitarist/singer/songwriter, its only a matter of time before his reputation is sealed as one of the greats in blues
Love John Mayer. I think I have ten of his albums, great stuff.
an OK guitar player??? Please - I dont like all of his songs but the dude can flat out play. Some of his blues covers are excellent.
Fantastic strat sound.
I wish there was some way to watch the whole performance
I was there! Sat in the second row. It was crazy, he mostly play SRV covers all night.
I just saw this 6 yrs later sorry. But I found a full version of John from 7 yrs ago and as I said. I had no idea he did the whole song. I copy pasted it. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html
His tone is incredible.
That's probably the best David Letterman episode I've ever watched. :)
He's got a great guitar tone. Man, I wish I had that!
they should let artists do this on talk shows more often.
thanks for putting this together
"There he is ball shaver everybody!" hahahaha

If anybody knows where to find the full version of the ghetto here I’ll love you forever. Or really any of these
The guy who runs this Utube keeps deleting my post here’s a full version of John playing the ghetto and a mashup with a Michael Jackson song. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html
If there was a way to watch the full performance i’d spend days learning it...
I found it. It was done 7 yrs ago. I didn’t think he ever did a full version. Here it is. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html
Awesome! Must be fun playing little songs like this : )
Nice monster tone Mayer...
i just want to listen to him jam forever
He's playing through a old vintage Blackface Fender Super Reverb, which he rented in New York.. He said that in some guitar magazine..
couldn't have said it any better. kudos to you
John Mayer is a very soulful musician
The Ghetto is a great song to jam along with. I recommend it highly for any guitar player. I've playing slide along with it and enjoy it every time.
I'll fill in the parts I know for sure...
1:14-1:33 John Mayer - No Such Thing
1:55-2:11 Eric Clapton - Old Love
2:17-2:58 Donnie Hathaway - The Ghetto
3:03-END sounds a lot like a BB King blues tune, not sure what it is though.
yeah, i wish i could hear him do a full version of old love. Im happy somebody else caught that.
I checked it and your right. Thanks!
very good. i love it
1:56 this is right when heavier things came out.. and yet he plays a riff very similar to i don't trust myself (with loving you), which came out three years later.
foreshadowing i guess.
Letterman had the best Band in late night history led by Paul Shaffer. 2nd place definitely goes to The Max Weinberg 7 from Conans Late Night NBC show.
Now, that's a cool version of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto" 02:29 ❤ JM
Found full version. It was done 7 yrs ago. I was not aware he did one. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html.
@@Utube-s8m Wow that's amazing! Thank you for sharing!
This is so cool I Miss Dave
his music is just so lovable i dont understand how people could dislike him for his music.!
Yet more successful and talented than we will ever be.
@blusismylife Thanks! I checked out the Donny Hathaway version... Awesome Jam.
I'll check out the other one!87
It’s nice to be on TV
1:56 sounds just like the intro to I don't trust myself with loving you. So awesome
Brandon Look The song is Old Love. Its a Clapton song that Mayer spanks when he covers it. You can find the audio here somewhere.
@MrBearmanification ah, hence the old love he sings when they come back from commercial. nice. thank you for the most insightful reply i've ever gotten on youtube. (seriously) I'm going to watch that other video now, much appreciated.
john mayer is brilliant
thanks!!
john mayer kills it!
Thanks!
Paul S is the Doc Severinsen of our times..."Good Stuff" as Johnny would say...
2:22
my favourite, it's fun watching the bassist.
I
it's called "no such thing" from the album Room for Squares
@voodoochili12 i think he's around 6'3 so it makes his guitars look smaller. i used to always think his strat was smaller too
thanks a lot, i'm actually thinkin on getting room for squares tomorrow :). i'm kinda new on JM's tunes.
Ashton Kutcher is like "Dang, why can't I be as cool as John Mayer. I'm trying so much harder!!!"
😆
Dude...this band has class like Will Lee, Anton Fig & the maestro himself, Paul Schaeffer
playing Old Love by Clapton and Cray at 1:57 !!!
I would of killed to be in the audience to watch this
he was playing for real that night.
Is he playing a Super Reverb here?
Sweet chops :-)
2:18 what is this song? anybody?
Grega Škufca The Ghetto. Sorry just saw this 4 yrs later. I liked it too. I play it all
the time.
I agree that it's the end of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Empty Arms" at 0:58. 0:00-0:23 is just John soloing over the usual opening tune Shaffer's band plays as Letterman walks to his desk. I think we covered all the bases here except that last tune, which is really bugging me!

thanks alot cool riff :)
what a humble guy he is
David's like "so john is here, cool, I guess."
Paul's like "YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT HE IS!! AND HE'S ALL MINE!."
1:56 wow it’s the start of “I don’t trust myself” way before it came out
That’s actually Old Love by Eric Clapton, amazing on Clapton’s acoustic work as well
Sid Pepels I know😂😂 but it’s the start of the main riff of “I don’t trust myself”
It's an original by Mayer, called "No Such Thing"..
"Old Love" by Eric Clapton, Mayer has a great cover on TH-cam.
good work thanks for cutting it out
What's the song at 2:16? I'll give you a million dollars if you can tell me, I'm desperate!
"How 'bout dat?"
Yeah... how about that Letterman.
How about that?
very cool : )
Dave should let Paul and a guest artist play once and a while a whole song so we in TV land can enjoy.
@wagstaff11 I only know two versions: the original by Donny Hathaway and the jazz version by George Benson (john mayer play this version at the video)... Love it... Hugs from BraziL!!
yeah old love
he finishes playing "empty arms" at 1:00
@Cheftee it's actually a song called "Old Love" by Eric Clapton which he's covering. You're right though, it's a very similar feel.
Listen to Mayer's cover of it on youtube, insane stuff.
does anyone know tha name of the song from 2:24. ? i love the latin feel
Is the whole available somewhere on the internet?
Yes but the guy that runs this channel keeps deleting my post. Here’s John. th-cam.com/video/0bx70hCmmdg/w-d-xo.html.
Is that Anton Fig on drums!!
Será que paul shaffer play no app rhythm Rush?
Eu viro perfil dele em uma partida!!😅😅😅😅😅
Is he using a Super-reverb here?
@blusismylife love his solo's in that part, do you know who does that song?
@GeorgianPranks yea he was late a second time too. Seemed like he was distracted by what was coming out of John Mayer's amp.
It's not by too short. The ghetto is by DONNY HATHAWAY. Too short just used that hook like a bunch of rappers do in their music.
Damn who is better lookin Mayer or Kutcher ? Looked like a competition
@stratoblues07 thank you very much !!
Letterman - "THERE HE IS, IT'S BALL SHAVER, EVERYBODY!!"
Haha.. Watch John's face in the background when they're talking about the pear-shaped shaker. He looks like he is confused... lol.
this all sounded like pure SRV,nice
0:00 the opening song sounds like an copied version of Huey Lewis '82 hit, Bad Is Bad.
oh man, I love that he threw old love by clapton in there.
@sejtur not a big deal.. he just annunciated the "n" in John. there was no "the"
the bass player what kind of bass is he using
fucking right man thats how we have musicians. stealing licks is part of developing your own guitar persona in my mind.
Whats the song title at 1:15
Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto
th-cam.com/video/OqZ2JBVXgpA/w-d-xo.html
it's No Such Thing by John himself.
Does someone know what song they are playing at 2:17-2:58? It sounds very familiar.....
