4 1/2 years , Alexander Selkirk was on the island of Juan Fernandez . Now this small island group is known as Robinson Crusoe Islands , @ 1972 . Two Spanish ships stopped at the Juan Fernandez . Selkirk went into hiding , because Spain and England were at war . Eventually a British ship took him to England . There he became a sensation. There he was interviewed for a few days by Daniel Defoe .
Robinson Crusoe is one of my favorite novels. He was the sole survivor of a ship wreck and in the novel was there 28 years. In the novel, he avoided the Spanish but was terrified of the native cannibals that visited the island occasionally.
See Tom Neal of New Zealand . Two times he willing went to an island as the only inhabitant for years at a time . Also his book : An Island to One's Self .
I would love to duscover how long it would take before i missed company since people only want something from me. My brother craved company and im the opposite. He is in a home at 60 yrs old mainly , as with many people, due to covid lockdown and those few weeks of isolation tipping him into dementia. And was working right upto lockdown. The was incredible.
Life seems to not turn well for most of the wild spirited seafarers when they attempt to create their own govt. or town. or settlements. so many stories from the days of sail and exploration...you would think the true adventurers would learn from their predecessors and just SAIL and not try to settle, but alas ,even the great captains Morgan and Teach, and Barbarossa, no matter how much wealth and ships, pardons and legal powers they accumulated could seem to become settled in society... always looking out on the sea..."sail on sailor"
His Choler was red; his envy was green; his fever was yellow; his mood was blue. He wished he was dead; he sought to be seen; His book was Longfellow; His jib like unto an ewe
Yes he was Everyman but he is a Scot who had the most useful range of living skills - dying of plague at sea….gosh. I wonder if most Europeans normally acquired all these skills….I mean the guy was a professional navigator ….thats well paid work - he wasnt from a poor home so he may have had servants as a kid?
I was thinking if he was justified getting off. Here's what I found. "Selkirk's suspicions were soon justified, as Cinque Ports foundered near Malpelo Island 400 km (250 mi) from the coast of what is now Colombia; Stradling and the surviving members of his crew were taken prisoner by the Spanish."
If you knew my wife you would understand why I dream of being alone on a Island for any number of years. Peaceful.

This guy is living better than most people
He got the last laugh the ship got wrecked in a storm and the survivors were arrested and imprisoned by the Spanish.
Bring it on.. a simple life hunt eat live.. humanity has lost its appeal with the way we have gone backwards.. would you survive..
Only a Scotsman (or similar) could have accomplished such a great feat.
He runs out of gunpowder , then they show him signaling with gun shots.

Sounds like heaven that island😊😊
where is this Island, I'm heading there as soon as I find it.
Makes Tom hanks look like….Tom hanks.
He may have been better off staying on the island
Many moons ago, I lived in Lower Largo, and knew (one of) Selkirk's descendent(s). He loved his whisky.
I have heard that Robinson Crusoe is leaving Friday 😊

This also happened to Tom Hanks. He had a soccer ball to socialize with.

His Choler was red; his envy was green; his fever was yellow; his mood was blue.

His book was Longfellow;
His jib like unto an ewe
