    Wonderful job! This is the first time I've seen mention of the latency of these mixers. In my case use of using RØDECaster II as a live mixer with audio from a television, we always have to turn down the TV speakers, because the latency out of the amplifier makes everything sound weird.

    Wow, you give really good reviews, I appreciate it very much! I think I’m sold on the DLZ Creator. Screen size, individual control knobs, interface, automix, auto ducking, set up modes, auto levels for example. I think the preamps on the DLZ sound a bit cleaner. It is something I can learn from and grow with as I progress. Lots of headroom for future updates including the mysterious Ethernet port. So, yeah in a couple of weeks I will be behind the console … HBD to me! Thanks again.

    Thank you, Chris, for this wonderful review. I have a neighbor who inspired me to purchase a podcast digital mixer. He has the Rodecaster Pro II, I purchased the DLZ Creator because I have been into Music Grear for over 30 years and Mackie has been around for a while. Overall, after the purchase, I love the quality of the sound with the Mackie and the functionality is very sufficient for my workflow. I still Love your presentation as an after-purchase confirmation of this great product.

    I don't think the lack of a second usb port on the Mackie DLZ is a problem. For taking output from a gaming console or output from a second computer and using that in a mix, I got the following advice from Mackie: For something like this you would need to use the audio output of another computer or game console via 1/8 inch to 1/8th inch cable or 1/8th inch to dual 1/4 inch cable. The 1/8th to 1/8th connection would be plugged into the 7/8 input of the DLZ Creator. The 1/8th inch to dual 1/4 inch cable would connect to the 5/6 input of the DLZ Creator.

  • @freethinksman4393
    @freethinksman4393 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Mackie pioneered the combination balanced/ unbalanced 1/4" output on their first generation of analog mixers back in the early 90s. If you use a balanced TRS cable out of the Mackie, it provides balanced outputs to cameras that accept balanced line-level. However, you can also use unbalanced TS cables, at which poit the outputs send an unbalanced signal to the destination. You do not need to use a direct box or unbalance the signal in some other way. I just re-read this and realized it probably looks like I work for Mackie. I don't. I have just owned a half dozen of their mixers since 1993. Even the first 1202 I bought back then had the balanced/ unbalanced feature.

    Thanks for letting me know that the Mackie DLZ lacks the key feature that would make it a viable outside broadcast mixer for a radio station- the auto monitor mute when the mics are on. I also recall reading somewhere that the 4 multi mic channel inputs aren't true multi inputs, that is, they only offer a Mic Level. To be useful for me they'd need to offer Line In OR Mic level.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can manually mute the monitor outputs and the 4 combo inputs are truly mic/line/instrument switchable on the DLZ.

    The DLZ-Creator looks more attractive to me. However, it took Mackie a bit too long to come out with it. Once you subscribe to an ecosystem, which Rode seems to be spareheading in the audio industry, it takes more than just money to think outside that ecosystem. Rode has succeeded in creating the 'Apple-like' image for themselves. Every video of Rode reminds you of Apple products. Good job, Rode.
    Can Mackie stand the competition and provide firmware updates that make an old device new with the release of major updates like Rode does? Time will tell.
    And thanks for the in-depth review, Curtis. Technically comprehensive, as always.

    Which one of these two devices has this feature? Mackie DLZ Creator or RODECaster Pro 2 ?

    Great comparison! Thank you. I have a question:
    Is there a mixer & recorder that provides 32-bit flow ADC? There are field recorders with this capability but I didn't come across a mixer with 32-bit flow. I mean 32-bit is already an industry standard. When I get for a podcast 3-4 people, I want to know that I don't ruin anything with levels or they won't produce too loud sound too close to a mic that it'd ruin recording. Usually, trying to retake similar conversation and get together similar people is extremely hard or rather impossible. Properly speaking I don't understand why brands still release 24-bit recorders while 32-bit ones are more versatile.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One more question of you don't mind. Does RodeCaster Pro 2 have good DAC and amps for headphones? Some reviewers noticed that RodeCaster Duo has terrible low-quality DAC and it's just impossible to use it as an audio-interface due to a very bad DAC. What's the situation with Pro 2? Great comparative review, as always, thanks you! Do you know, or have any sense of? anymore about future support for the DLZ post Rode’s purchase of Mackie? The updates on the DLZ since launch haven’t exactly been stellar, with the most recent firmware update (version 1.2) having been last February. That said they have implemented audio over Ethernet, any thoughts on how that might perform compared to usb c on the Rode? Would one expect more or less latency over Ethernet, more or better performance? Any thoughts you can share, would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The firmware updates have been slower from Mackie, but in my estimation, that’s because they got so much right from the beginning. I still find the DLZ effects easier to setup and get the sound I want. The RODECaster compressor in particular for some reason. These are just my subjective thoughts so don’t take them for anything more than that.
      I’ve used the network audio feature only once since it isn’t necessary for my workflows, but cool that they added it. I haven’t done any formal measurements of latency. My sense is that it’ll depend on a lot of factors - network latency being the foremost. But you can use the DLZ via USB as well, if the network option isn’t working well for any given project.
      Each week since I first received the DLZ I decide what to use for my livestream that week. I’ve chosen the DLZ 90% of the time and things other than the RODECaster Pro for the remaining 10%.
      I started to create a course on the RODECaster but eventually abandoned it when it took too long to get things working reliably…and then my vacation time reserved to work on the course ran out.
      Note that I bought the RCP2 with my money. Mackie gave me the DLZ to make the original review (not this video).
      It is one of those situations where on paper the RCP2 generally looks superior, but in my experience, I enjoy working with the DLZ more. Maybe that’s because I learned to mix on an analogue mixing board and so the DLZ just makes sense to me. 🤷‍♂️

    Hey Curtis! I have two questions
    1. What is the EIN of the microphone inputs on the Mackie DLZ Creator? They seem to be very secretive of this and I can't find any info on it that I can compare to the Rodecaster Pro II. I care a lot about this as I use an SM7B and want to reduce the hiss as much as possible. The Spec sheet says -143.4 dBV A-weighted, compared to the Rodecaster 2's -131.5dBV (A-weighted). That sounds impossibly quiet, do those results fall in line with your measurements? When you compare them, is the Mackie quieter?
    2. Apparently the Mackie DLZ Creator is now $639, making it significantly cheaper than the Rodecaster 2 (this could be a response to Rode acquiring Mackie.) With that in mind, do you believe the Mackie has significantly more value for the cost now?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. I don’t have the tools to measure at that level, but in practical use, the DLZ and RCP2 both have very clean preamps that can easily drive the SM7B.
      2. Yes! And I have run into fewer weird glitches and software bugs with the DLZ. My perspective after another 7 months of use leans even more heavily toward the DLZ.

I've had a few gaming streamers accuse me of being a shill for saying I prefer the Mackie because to them, the dual USB ports makes the RCP2 an "objectively better choice." The biggest reason for why it is mono is because each channel has its own FX bus as opposed to a one or two FX buses that you might find on some consoles.

      Each of these are mono.

      Giving each channel its own FX bus allows the user to have different FX per channel as opposed to all of them sharing the same FX when sent to the bus.

    I like the Mackie DLZ Creator. I like the user interface and Easy - Enhanced - Pro options. However I wish Enhanced mode had just a little more specific tweaking capability. It seems like just a hair more than Easy mode.
    DLZ Creator also supports audio over USB as an input as well as Bluetooth which is great. However, it only has 4 inputs with preamps...Mackie Onyx 80 preamps which came out 18 years ago in 2005...😬🤷‍♂️ More of a "mini mixer" than a true mixer. I'd like to see at least 10 combo jack inputs, all with better preamps. There's a rumor I heard that Mackie is working on a bigger, more expensive version of this but I have no idea of when it will come out or if true.
    Another new digital mixer that's a peg up from these is the new Yamaha DM3S ($1,699) and DM3D ($1,999). More inputs and supports up to 96kHz. However, I much prefer the UI of the DLZ Creator. Digital mixers have really come a long way. If I had to buy right now I'd probably get the Yamaha DM3S or DM3D but if Mackie makes a bigger, better version I'd lean in their favor.

However, I"m having an issue with my PC 'disconnecting' from the unit on a regular basis. Most of the times, it's a brief interruption (2-4 seconds) that I'm alerted about by Adobe Audition telling me my audio gear is 'changing'. Other times, everything will lock up, require a reboot and session audio is generally lost. FYI, I've run several interfaces on this studio computer including a Universal Audio Apollo and the RCP1 and 2 with zero issues. Mackie support (which has been superb) is recommending a higher quality USB-C TO USB-A cable, which I've ordered (Ankor brand). Let me know if you have any thoughts. While this is might not be a huge deal for a home setup where movement is minimal, it might matter more in a live setting, where things get bumped around a lot, don't want a desk to get damaged, etc. The bottom also often has technical information printed on it.

It smokes the Roadcaster II and beats the DLZ as well for features and what you can do.

    Excellent job!
    It would be good to know the number of virtual inputs and outputs each device creates on the computer since that can be vital information in live streams.

      RODECaster Pro II creates 16 virtual input channels via USB when in multitrack mode. I dont' have it connected at the moment, but I believe the DLZ is similar.
