Hey Mr. Judd, Thanks for this 24" recap. I liked when content creators make this kind of video, because it's helpful in understanding what and where to invest. I’m from Brazil, and seriously man, it's tough here. One Rode lava mic, for example, here costs about R$829,00, and without converting, just for comparison, it’s about $829. When we convert, it’s about $136.41 + taxes. Just to clarify, this is a bit of a silly comparison, as if we were converting the currency at a 1:1 exchange rate. So again, thank you because we need to know how to spend or invest for sure in good quality gear. Professionals like you are an inspiration, man, really. And thanks for the videos about the new Zoom Essentials.
I loved what you emphasized towards the end of the video; the gear is just a means to deliver a story, and it's the story that really matters. Keep up your great work, and thank you for lots of educational videos.
Good closing message. Just make good videos, whatever you use. I like that you show options. And, I'm on board with your theme about not liking small, non-replaceable batteries.
Would love to see a video on what you use in your pro work, AND if you could also suggest in that video what someone on a serious budget might use as a substitute. Thanks in advance.
Great video. Thanks! I also use the MixPre 3 II. Primarily as an audio interface with the Ethos mic but also on sound for video or field recording at times. Bought it several years ago for around $700. Now it’s $950 which also speaks to how quality audio gear can appreciate in value over time.
Thanks Curtis, I've watched your channel for some years now, your mic reviews helped me purchase a Sennheiser MKE600. Plugged into a Volt 2 to my PC ,then through MiniHost (Gives me the correct sound floor as I have a small office and noisy AC) then to Voicemeeter Banana and finally to my Video Capture software, and in post - your tip for Auphonic changed a lot as I get a really great audio file from that product and end up with a pretty acceptable Audio for my training lectures.
Loved the concept in this video, been a long time subscriber and this is why I love your perspective from the true working professional that also gets to review loads of gear.
A couple of very solid points, Curtis. When I was setting up my studio, I went straight for the Neumann KLM, which is plugged into a Grace Design m101 which then goes into RME babyface FS. For my workflow, the Babyface is actually necessary, but I could have saved a lot by just skipping the preamp and even go with a cheaper pencil condenser. And instead, get more lights :D
That's a impressive amount of stuff you use, and your setup in itself is equally impressive! i don't think i would go to such extremes if i were shooting these types of videos as you do. 🙂
Make the professional version too :D. Please. And yes, any HD camera with decent dynamic range will do for studio YT work. Lately my ZV-E10 II seems to be dream camera for YT studio work. Only con is 1 SD card slot, other than that it's a killer for quality vs the price.
Thanks good to see. Would also be interested to see what you use for pro assignments. You remain one of my 'go to' reference sources on kit, esp. audio. Too many YT 'shill dogs' out there IMO, so I applaud your integrity and independence. Also for encouraging us to get out and use what we have to make great.... Thanks also for staying away from hyperbole and not using phrases like 'game changer' (a much abused/overused term I hate). Always love your perspective! Would be curious about your Pro work, certainly. No need to upgrade if new stuff won't make your life better or justify it's cost. Been using a MixPre 3-II and DPA mic since fairly early on in the pandemic for teaching + recording courses, including as my audio interface and it's been super solid. No urges to upgrade... I mean thankfully an 833 is just way not worth it for my use! LOL I got an open box deal, and this thing will last a long time and gets software updates. It's just fun to use. Yes, it cost more than the Zoom H6, but I know I wouldn't have (personally) lasted quit as long with that... Buying gear "once" (as much as possible) has been a great way to go.
My wife is a soldier in the US Army. Her job "MOS" is public affairs. It's basically filmmaking in the Army. She just doesn't have decent gear to make quality content. Would you consider donating some audio gear to them and their unit? If so I can give details. Thank you
Enjoyable. I find it very satisfying to have solid gear that enables me to say, year after year, "Prove it," to the latest crop and go along happily enjoying the results. Not top-tier, either: R6, EF 24-105/4L, EF 70-200/2.8 II L. Period.
Hey Curtis. Would love to see a pro job video as well. Besides that it would be great to see a video on a setup for hybrid events for business like townhalls and larger meeting where multiple presenter’s needs to have miles, the audience in the room needs to hear via speakers but without the mikes picking up and at the same time an online audience needs to have the audio from the presenters. Lastly also covering Q&A via a handheld mike from audience. What setup is needed and what gear would you recommend for that? A video on that would be very nice to see 😉
You ask, Why? Because you love what you do day after day. And you love sharing your knowledge to others. It's that so simple. I really like to watch your videos because you share that important thing, information what help decide whatever it is good or not to me. thank you this detailed presentation from your gears. I have also a Amaran 300C and like it... and i buyed a Spotlight mini... yes it has little flaws but for me is perfect. And that's the point of what you say at the end of the video... It's was long trip so far - approx. 6 years - but i think i am reached the goal. I have good lights (2 x Amaran 100d, 1 x Amaran 300x, honeycombs, barn doors, soft boxes, light stands), wired and wireless mics (Shure SM7B, SM58, AT4040, Hollyland Lark Max), a Sony A7IV, a6000 (second camera), ATEM Mini Pro (for me is enough the 4 channel) and lot of other accessoires. Unfortunatly I have little time to make video... never mind... it comes the 2025... new year, new ideas and new plans.. I wish my best to you!
Why are we still doing this? Do you think anybody will ask this question ever? We love listening to you! I learned a great deal from you! As you said, I would be interested in knowing what you use for professional work as well, thanks again Curtis!
Yes, definitely interested to see what you're using for your pro jobs. Also, are you able to provide video/audio recordings of what it is you're actually professionally recording?
I always enjoy your gear package advice. Lights for narrative storytelling in a feature-length film are my next investment. It would be interesting to know what you'd put in a general purpose kit.
It would be great to hear what gear you use professionally for on-location sound. Your deep knowledge of audio has been incredibly helpful for me personally/professionally. For example... my go to mic for location sound (dialogue) for many years has been the Sennheiser MKH 416, but after watching your videos and seeing that you prefer the Sennheiser MKH 50, and then subsequently realizing A LOT of professional audio guys/gals use the MKH 50, I'm beginning to think I need to pick one up! Please let us know what other gear you use professionally for on-location sound.
Pluggin in an USB-C into an XLR looked sick as hell, this isn’t April 1st possibly? Very happy with both Mixpre-6, Mixpre-6 II (sold first version to a friend) and Zoom LiveTrack L12. Your videos over the years have been extremely helpful in increasing the quality and ease of my “work”. Thanks so much for all your content!
Good info for people that have the means to buy all that expensive gear. I think you were not bragging, but for most YT'ers, They won't have the budget to buy even one of the things you mentioned. It would be good for you to do a video on mult-person TH-cam setup and with livestreaming compatible gear. This would be more practical for most followers.😊
Thanks for yet another super helpful video. Last week I purchased a Rodecaster Duo and it's not as user friendly as I had hoped. With FLEXIBILITY come COMPLEXITY. But it is a sound upgrade from my Vocaster Two which worked flawlessly with my Heil PR 40 mic. It would be great to see how you set up for Zoom calls. Best wishes from Brisbane down under Curtis. PS I'd like to know what monitor headphones or earbuds you use when on Zoom.
Congrats on the RODECaster. For Zoom, I use my RODE NT-1 connected to my Apollo Solo interface and JBL monitors (I do t like to be in headphones all day and Zoom filters out the speaker sound and I’m aggressive on the mute button.
Great baby Curtis from 2013. I started doing videos 1 year ago so your are my 2023-today mentor. I have a travel channel (my real channel) and. tech channel (my practice channel). Heck, I even did my first mic review: ECM-M1 versus 70 dB air-conditioner. The air-conditioner here in Manila whomped the ECM-M1 LC and NC Filter. You got way more space than me but dang I'm the best sounding TH-camr in Manila (NTG5/Zoom F3).
Calling the C70 old and defending it had me clutching my pearls. Image wise it's still the king imho. I have 2 but also an FX6 and FX30. For quick stuff the sonys deliver decent quality, but I'm always reaching for the C70s for docu and commercial work.
I like it. Overall nothing excessive, and having high standards is not a problem. Quality audio gear, quality lights, quality camera/lens and the most important one is competence in using it. Better gear doesn't always give you better results.
Hey Curtis, I dont really see any tutorials on using the Tascam FR AV2 and considering you have one of those with the Sennheiser MKH50 would be amazing if you could do a tutorial on setting up and using Tascam FR AV2 with the Sennheiser Mic and the optimal settings and setting the gain. Thanks for everything you do.
If I made a video about the gear that I possess, it would run for several hours. If I made one about the gear that I actually use, it would be a one minute YT short! I must take some pills for the recurring ache in my wallet... Anyway, now I will watch yours. [Edited to add that your closing statement is spot on. In the days when I used to actually create content (classical music recordings) I regarded myself as a minimalist, using only what was strictly necessary, and basing my work on a core rig to which items were added if the occasion really demanded it. One client made my day by saying after her Wigmore Hall piano recital that she thought as she went on stage that I hadn't turned up, as she saw nothing!]
Honestly, for the most part, there have been superbly usable cameras for video since at least 2018. I'd still be happy with something like an A7III if I had to.
Thanks Curtis for all your helpful videos. I'm interessted in WHY you use different Mics beside the boom-mic/overhead-mic. What is key for VoiceOver? and for Livestreams? What is changing to yt-video-Production? and what are you focusing on when not using the boom-mic?
For VO, I’m looking for a more intimate, closer to mic sound. For livestream, I get close to the mic to improve my signal to noise ratio because there’s a lot of equipment in the room, some of it making fan noise.
Personally I use the Mixpre 6 II as my audio recorder, RE-20, mainly for my podcast & videos. Would use my MKH 416 but not a good choice in a small room. However most of this is gear I had purchased when I was doing freelance ENG work for the place I worked at so I basically just repurposed it for that. Along with a Canon RP I used for b roll footage. I like and enjoy the setup works well for me. Best part is it can be very mobile for me as well.
Thanks for putting this together Curtis. What are your thoughts on the recent bunch of wireless mics that Rode, Dji and Sony have released? I've tried the Sony W3 with my A1 and it's pretty solid out in the field. Would you use such kit in a pinch?
Hey if you have any pull with Aputure, perhaps you could suggest they make the next gen of the PT4C a bit more robust. It's easily the most fragile out of the Amaran line, which is a bit of a letdown with how portable it is. I get that it's made with "creators" in mind or whatever, but they could probably beef it up without detracting from their other offerings, no?
I have a question, but first I just want to say that I've been watching your channel for years and I want to thank you for all the great content, it is so helpful to all of us! My question is simple, you had mentioned that you got the larger ATEM to have 5 inputs, could you share what you needed 5 inputs for if you want? Do you have a laptop sending B roll or slides via HDMI? Just curious. : ). Thank you!
Hi Curtis, always enjoy your videos. Love my MKH50. Just curious as to what mic stand/boom arm you are using in the thumbnail of this video? How do you like it?
DIG your content. Any recommendations for Mini RGB LED "under cabinet" lights? Our latest puck lighting, even at 24 fps, still shows the horizontal lines.
@@curtisjudd I need a mic to record indoor and outdoor sounds. It can be multichannel music or stereo/mono sounds of nature. budget around $100. For amatur videos ) Thank you.
I rarely see people on TH-cam with a mkh50! How long have you been using it? I've had mine for 10+ years and at first I was not a fan of how easily you can break a recording with technique errors (eg positioning letting plosives or bumps travel through it) but grew to be my favorite. Not what I'd recommend for live streamers which live stream clips or edits seems to be what I see taking up my feed the most. These days it's almost surprising whenever someone is NOT using an SM7B.
When you use the NT1 for zoom calls, what do you do for hearing the other people? If you're using speakers or monitors, how do you avoid feedback problems with such a sensitive mic?
amazing video. For lavalier mic would you say Deity PR2 is one of the best now. And would you recommend this as a setup Tascam FR AV2 paired with Sennheiser MKH50
Great video as always! thanks Curtis. Question for all: For my home studio setup, I'd like to use my streamdeck and possibly Home Assistant to control the lighting. My needs are pretty simple but I do not want simple (read: cheap) lighting that you cannot remotely control with open standards. What lighting suggestions do poeple have to enure controllability in this way?
Curtis, are you interested in the Rodecaster Video? I just installed it to replace my Atem mini. So far, so good. But I love your advice about "obsessing with gear." Content is king, after all. Hope all is well. Drew
Thanks to your recommendation, I got the MKH50, and it’s incredible-I use it daily for recordings. I keep it mounted on a boom arm with provided foam windscreen. Since it’s a significant investment for me, I’m wondering if leaving it on the arm for the whole time in a regular room (not a studio) could negatively impact its lifespan. Should I store it in its case daily, or is it fine to keep it mounted? What’s your approach as an audio professional? Any best practices would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Curtis!
How do you monitor audio in real time?Do you keep looking at the RTA's on the MOTU? Do you record the audio onto the camera direct and later on sync in post?
After watching this one I’m hoping my GAS induced deep dives into the audio rabbit hole will finally slow down! Pretty much realizing that, yah, maybe I have enough gear already - and should just get down to gettin’ er done! Observation … looks like you have your MixPre3 II ready to go with either a desk mic stand or a floor mic stand. It also looked like you had a arca Swiss mount permanently attached to the bottom of you MixPre?? Q: can you divulge the connectors you use with both these setups, including the desk stand that appears in the video, and the mounts? 🙏 (I have the MixPre6 II and figure it would be the same mounts?)
Hi, Curtis! Thanks for this amazing work you have been made on youtube about audio and video stuff. Just a question, what is the maximum distance you would use a Mkh P48 microphone above your head for dialogue recording? And what 2 or 3 people in the same scene? Do you think you would use the just one microphone to do it all? like the P48?
Depends on the sound I want. If I’m ok with a more distant sound I g perspective, maybe a meter or two. Whether I use one or more depends on how close the people are seated to each other. I’ve mic’s two people who are within 3 feet of each other but you need a very quiet room.
Hello, excellent video, thank you. One question: if I need the client to be able to hear what is happening in the recording and see it at the same time on an external monitor, how could I do it?
I would really love to see what (1), what equipment you use on your professional work and (2)….really, honestly, what do you do IN that worjk(?) and (3) what makes up the bulk of work (income)?? Is the bulk of your income from….a non-related full time job….AND do location sound AND do TH-cam? I’m not trying to pry, but am professionally curious because I am finding it so hard to make TH-cam content, because, even though my professional work is in live event production (20 years)….it obviously takes most of my time. so when I want to make a TH-cam video, it has to come out of my spare time, of which there isn’t always a lot.
Have you ever used the Boss Gigcaster 8? I know its geared more for musicians but its podcasting/streaming abilities looks like it competes well with the Mackie/Rode
Thanks for yet another video. I see you mentioned the zoom f4. Is there any case for it in 2025, before an f6 or f8n? Is the f8n pro the “best” of the series? I have an f3 and wonder about having more xlr for…for….
Great first option on a tight budget for someone getting started. But have to face the reality that if any issues arise with the F4, you're out of luck in terms of support or repair from ZOOM.
The Rode NT1 5th gen. The male XLR they have in there is something that I can't let go. It is such a good idea. But the reason I can't let it go, is because I can't find it anywhere!
I got the weirdest reaction back. The just told me that the sell USB and XLR cables on their site. Totally not what I meant and also no asked about. A chat bot would give a better answer!

Lastly also covering Q&A via a handheld mike from audience. What setup is needed and what gear would you recommend for that? A video on that would be very nice to see 😉
Would love to do that, but that's not something I have experience with....yet.
@ okay fair enough 😉 An idea for the future then 👍🏼
Another awesome video Curtis thanks! What about that little tabletop mount you’re using for the mixer? What is that one?
That’s the Sound Devices PIX-E stand.
🙏
Why are we still doing this? Do you think anybody will ask this question ever? We love listening to you! I learned a great deal from you! As you said, I would be interested in knowing what you use for professional work as well, thanks again Curtis!
👍
Yes, definitely interested to see what you're using for your pro jobs.
Also, are you able to provide video/audio recordings of what it is you're actually professionally recording?
Ok. university.webflow.com
Thanks Curtis. I'd be interested in what you'd use on a small film.
👍
Professional view too!
👍
great video!
Thanks!
@curtisjudd bring on the pro equipment one! Really looking forward to it! 😊

I always enjoy your gear package advice. Lights for narrative storytelling in a feature-length film are my next investment. It would be interesting to know what you'd put in a general purpose kit.
👍
It would be great to hear what gear you use professionally for on-location sound. Your deep knowledge of audio has been incredibly helpful for me personally/professionally. For example... my go to mic for location sound (dialogue) for many years has been the Sennheiser MKH 416, but after watching your videos and seeing that you prefer the Sennheiser MKH 50, and then subsequently realizing A LOT of professional audio guys/gals use the MKH 50, I'm beginning to think I need to pick one up! Please let us know what other gear you use professionally for on-location sound.
Got you covered: th-cam.com/video/FNB4TNAo4_g/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Pluggin in an USB-C into an XLR looked sick as hell, this isn’t April 1st possibly? Very happy with both Mixpre-6, Mixpre-6 II (sold first version to a friend) and Zoom LiveTrack L12. Your videos over the years have been extremely helpful in increasing the quality and ease of my “work”. Thanks so much for all your content!
👍
Good info for people that have the means to buy all that expensive gear. I think you were not bragging, but for most YT'ers, They won't have the budget to buy even one of the things you mentioned. It would be good for you to do a video on mult-person TH-cam setup and with livestreaming compatible gear. This would be more practical for most followers.😊
Ok
Thank you sir 🙏
👍
I would definitely want to know what you use professionally. I look forward to seeing that vid too. Thanks.

Nice!
Calling the C70 old and defending it had me clutching my pearls. Image wise it's still the king imho. I have 2 but also an FX6 and FX30. For quick stuff the sonys deliver decent quality, but I'm always reaching for the C70s for docu and commercial work.
👍🎥
I like it. Overall nothing excessive, and having high standards is not a problem. Quality audio gear, quality lights, quality camera/lens and the most important one is competence in using it. Better gear doesn't always give you better results.
Agreed!
Thanks, but sadly, the FR-AV2 was only on loan so I don’t have it on hand to make a tutorial.
Very interesting video Curtis. You have a really great setup. Curious if you ever plan to finish the basement.
No specific plans yet, but hopefully some day!
Thanks a lot Curtis. Would you be so kind to reveal, which product is shown at 00:30? It looks like a magnet mount for a lavalier? Thanks :-D
Yes, that's a magnet mount for the Audio Technica AT899 lavalier microphone.
Ha! Stay minimal. 👍
Honestly, for the most part, there have been superbly usable cameras for video since at least 2018. I'd still be happy with something like an A7III if I had to.
Yep!
👍
Thanks for putting this together Curtis. What are your thoughts on the recent bunch of wireless mics that Rode, Dji and Sony have released? I've tried the Sony W3 with my A1 and it's pretty solid out in the field. Would you use such kit in a pinch?
I’ve use the RODE Witeless kits for simple, short jobs before, yes.
i def wanna see a video on the professional work gear breakdown
Coming up Sunday if all goes to plan!
Yes, will mention that next time we talk. Also, replaceable batteries.
Keep it simple and enjoy the time creating.
Amen!
: ). Thank you!
Main camera, overhead camera, slides, live chat, hyperdeck.
@@curtisjuddthank you very much, all the best to you and your family!
The question is why do you not have a million subscribers? Low-key expertise, that's my jam.
👍
Hi Curtis, always enjoy your videos. Love my MKH50. Just curious as to what mic stand/boom arm you are using in the thumbnail of this video? How do you like it?
Thanks! This is the MKH50 and Triad Orbit mic stand.
DIG your content. Any recommendations for Mini RGB LED "under cabinet" lights? Our latest puck lighting, even at 24 fps, still shows the horizontal lines.
Thanks for your content. Can you advise for live audio recording in the house. Like music or gameplay.
Sure, what do you need, what are the details, what’s your budget?
@@curtisjudd I need a mic to record indoor and outdoor sounds. It can be multichannel music or stereo/mono sounds of nature. budget around $100. For amatur videos ) Thank you.
@@MagDag_ Maybe a ZOOM H1?
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions What do you think in comparasing with Tascam DR-05X ? Thank you
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions if there a jump in quality for paying a little more, would be like to hear that.
I’ve had the MKh50 since 2022 but I first tried it in 2015. I’ve also had the 8050 since 2017. I don’t close mic with it, mostly boom it above.
When you use the NT1 for zoom calls, what do you do for hearing the other people?
If you're using speakers or monitors, how do you avoid feedback problems with such a sensitive mic?
Near field monitors most of the time. I mute when I’m not talking and Zoom also prevents most bleed.
Super video.
👍
amazing video. For lavalier mic would you say Deity PR2 is one of the best now. And would you recommend this as a setup Tascam FR AV2 paired with Sennheiser MKH50
As for body pack recorders, yes, the PR-2 is probably my first choice. And yes, FR-AV2 and MKH50 is a great combination.
@@curtisjudd Thanks
Great video as always! thanks Curtis. Question for all: For my home studio setup, I'd like to use my streamdeck and possibly Home Assistant to control the lighting. My needs are pretty simple but I do not want simple (read: cheap) lighting that you cannot remotely control with open standards. What lighting suggestions do poeple have to enure controllability in this way?
Amaran’s newer lights integrate nicely with streamdeck
@ thank you!
Curtis, are you interested in the Rodecaster Video? I just installed it to replace my Atem mini. So far, so good. But I love your advice about "obsessing with gear." Content is king, after all.
Hope all is well.
Drew
Not interested only because I’m invested in the ATEM Mini and control panel so I’m set. But if I were in the market, I’d consider it.
As long as you keep it clean and the room isn't too dusty, it should be fine. We keep ours out in our studio at work all the time.
@@curtisjudd many thanks, thats a relief
How do you monitor audio in real time?Do you keep looking at the RTA's on the MOTU? Do you record the audio onto the camera direct and later on sync in post?
Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X headphones. I record scratch audio on the camera and sync in post.
That's the Sound Devices Pix-E stand. It isn't quick release, but it is solid. Not sure whether they make it anymore.
Next Christmas I’ll do it
Do what?
Hello, excellent video, thank you. One question: if I need the client to be able to hear what is happening in the recording and see it at the same time on an external monitor, how could I do it?
Send a wireless feed from the audio mixer to the client using something like DEITY THEOS or Comtek.
@curtisjudd Thank you very much Curtis for your help and taking the time to respond. Blessings!!
Would love to see the rack gear!
Oh, that's a good idea!
@@curtisjudd I saw a UA 6176, I didn’t know you had and got intrigued!

No, only because I can’t justify buying it with all this other gear on hand.
Would love to see the professional work go-to equipment.
Coming soon!
@ thanks for the answer, always insightful as usual!
Curious about the pro gear!
👍
The Rode NT1 5th gen. The male XLR they have in there is something that I can't let go. It is such a good idea. But the reason I can't let it go, is because I can't find it anywhere!
It is probably something they manufacture themselves.
@@curtisjudd I think that is fact. But nevertheless I send them an email :)
