All of this sounded pretty enlightening, especially at 2:00, so I decided to double check how it was possible to invest money into the Chinese stock market at 1992 and hold it for 30 years and still lose money because that sounds like a crazy far fetched statement. Looking at the Shanghai Composite Index (not Hong Kong for obvious reasons as we're talking about an index that would be primarily mainland Chinese stocks) which is currently trading at around 2,600, it had with two insane bubble highs of almost 6000 in 2007 and over 5000 in 2015 so this is post correction. In 1992, it was trading for around 300. I'm all for shedding light on how the Chinese market functions differently than the west, especially for investors that may not be familiar with how things work over there, but please don't fabricate vague lies and present it as facts. If this guy somehow managed to lose money while simply holding on to an index fund from 1992 then he has done the impossible. TLDR: This guy is either full of bull feces or he's a magician.
I laude that you checked for yourself, but this isn't what he said. He said that while the economy grew by 30x, your investment wouldn't have made any money, in terms of return on capital. As in, you buy a stock for $100, keep it for a while, and the company doesn't make any money or reinvests everything it made. You then sell your share for $110. You made $10 through that trade, but the EPS(earnings per share) where still 0. If you had gotten a dividend instead, that would've counted as "making money". Thats what he is trying to say. That nobody is making money by owning a share in a company that makes a profit, but rather that everything runs on speculation, basically. I didn't check the facts for myself though, the claim might still be off
