    That is so sad to see. We spent every year in the 1960's on holiday in Hemsby when I was a child. I remember many happy hours spent playing in the dunes and the bright lights of the arcades in the village. The rest of my family are all passed now and Hemsby is fading into the past with them. Thanks very much for making this video, you've put a tear in my eye and a warm glow in my heart.

    So very sad to see.been going to Norfolk since i was 15 now 75.last went with daughter and son in law 2021 just after i lost my husband,Swimming in the sea with seals.. so very many memories .we based in many places Sea Palling,Hemsby,Scratby ...right along that coast . I remember the Market and livestock auctions at stalham,the lovely craft center at Martham and having a cuppa in a tea room in Happisburgh which sadly succumbed to the ocean along with many dwellings. The best on as a child and then with my 3 children was shrimping in the sea Grown men would shrimp for their tea and would have larger shrimping nets than us and we had to be careful of weaver fish ....Oh dich memories this video has evoked. Thank you just remembered the huge cream eclairs at the old Bevans the bakers in Hemsby ...an everyday treat while in our Hols xx

    A heroic effort, wading through the sea-water and scrambling through acres of brambles in sodden clothes. I loved this video because Our Man took on some serious challenges to let us see beautiful, scary nature in the raw. Reminded me of being completely lost in pine woods with the light going, and stuck in mud up to the knees at the remote end of a reservoir. Most of the time we survive: but stay away from the edge!

    About 15 years ago I was thinking of moving to Norfolk and actually booked a viewing at a property in Hemsby but, having done my research and found out about the coastal erosion I decided against it. However, my researches at the time revealed that it wasn't wholly a natural erosion (though this is undoubtedly part of it) but is caused by some company or other harvesting the shale for building materials. I see it ISN'T being reported as this today and we can probably guess why. However, people in Hemsby who are suffering from this erosion should perhaps be questioning the local authority as to who they were allowing to harvest this shale at that time thereby removing the coast's natural defences against erosion.

    I WENT TO HEMSBY TWICE WITH MY EX-HUSBAND IN THE CARAVAN PARK 12 OCTOBER '91 AND THE FOLLOWING SUMMER RENTED CHALETS AND WENT TO THE VILLAGE SHOPS AND INDOOR MARKETS, WHILE MY SISTER MORE THAN SISTER-IN-LAW PLAYED THE COIN MACHINES. I DIDN'T THINK WE CAUGHT ANY SHOW'S OR ANYTHING AT NIGHT, AS SPENDING OUR DAY'S SHOPPING IN THE VILLAGE AND GOING AROUND WITH LINDA WATCHING HER WIN ON THE COIN MACHINES. I CAN'T REMEMBER THE HOLIDAY CAMP LIKE BUTLIN'S , BUT CAN'T REMEMBER AFTER ALL THESE YEAR'S. I'M QUITE SAD TO HEAR AND SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING AT HEMSBY. OUR NORFOLK VILLAGE'S ARE BEING NEGLECTED AND THE WEALTHY RIFFRAFF HAVEN'T DONE MUCH TO HELP. I WAS BORN A ROYAL PRINCESS AND JEWISH QUEEN AT WEST RUNTON IN LONGACRE MATERNITY HOME IN 1963 THAT HAS BEEN KNOCKED DOWN FOR HOUSING. I'VE GOT A PHOTO OF IT , AS IT WAS 20 YEAR'S GIVE OR TAKE 10 YEARS. I LOVE NORFOLK AND WAS HAPPY WHEN PRINCE EDWARD, EARL OF WESSEX RECOGNISED MY SISTER REBECCA AND I AS COUSIN'S ON MY PATERNAL SIDE. I BELIEVE AND LOVE THE PEOPLE OF NORFOLK. IT IS A PLACE WHERE I'M HAPPY TO HAVE BEEN BORN WITH SIX OTHERS ON THE DAY PRESIDENT KENNEDY SIGNED THE RATIFIED TREATY TO PROHIBIT NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST OR OTHER EXPLOSIONS IN THE SEA, AIR OR OUTER SPACE. I WAS BORN AT 0315 HOUR'S , BUT YOU HAVE MINUS I THINK FOUR HOUR'S FROM NORFOLK UK TO WASHINGTON D.C. USA. ANYWAY, IT'S GREAT TO BE LIVING IN ONE OF THE TWO CITY'S IN MY MIND IN NORFOLK UNLESS FAKENHAM IS CLASSED AS A CITY. I'M IN NORWICH AND I PREFER IT TO ANY AMERICAN CITY. IRONICALLY, DESPITE BEING A VICTIM OF ANTISEMITISM, MANY PEOPLE DON'T REALISE HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR MY PEOPLE, NORWICH WOULDN'T BE THE CITY IT IS TODAY.

    We used to go to Mundsley for many years, in the 1960s, they had excellent sea defences and I suppose they are still there. When we were going there was still part of the Beach closed off with the sign saying No entry, land mines!!!There was an Army Bomb Disposal Unit, across the road from the Beach. They were all ready to be disbanded until they spoke to one of the local people. They told him how many mines they had removed, and were horrified when he said Oh no, I was in the party laying those mines, we laid many more than that!! So it was back to the drawing board!!!Always listen to the locals!! Take care!

    Very sad for people losing their homes. It is a reminder that the planet is changing all the time and that we can learn from King Canute (Cnut is I believe the more used spelling now) no man can control the elements. It was also interesting to see those concrete blocks when you went down to the beach. The older square blocks look like dragons teeth from the second world war that have been re-used to make a breakwater. There was also I think a spigot mortar mounting. A sad but interesting video.

      My wife and I went to Hemsby back in July and there were several torrential rainfalls while we were there. They have put a lot more concrete and iron blocks at the Gap now, and the beach is visibly narrower. Thanks for showing us just how bad it's going to get!

    This is what gets me. Councils quick to take down house as they don’t want it on the beach. Will the council clean up metal and concrete from the old road? Nope. It’s council inaction. Didn’t save the road, now cars can’t get out, ecological damage if they go in the sea & they can’t get diggers to the next load of house about to go in.

    That whole sand cliffed coast is buggered. Erosion has been going on since the last IceAge. Broadlands will return to Roman times with islands, swamps and inlets. You will be able to navigate your sea going "Billy Boy" to Norwich from what is left of Lesser Yarmouth. Good bye to the kiosks and arcades of Hemsby, and good riddance!

    Regardless of your opinion on Climate Change, or Global Warming, or whatever you call it next, there is one fact that is certain.
    The Ocean is rising about 1/5" per year, or 1" every 5 years. The rate of increase is accelerationg. For every 1" of ocean rise, lateral erosion can be up to 200' depending on the slope of the land and its composition.
    Hardening the shoreline with walls and such is a real mistake. It causes "reflection" of waves which carries sand out to sea, thereby increasing erosion.
    I betcha any old timer would tell you that the beach used to be huge back in their childhood.
    And for those of you lamenting the past, and hating on the increase in tourists, traffic, or whatever, think about this . . .
    Everybody complains about growth. But you never see a protester at a Maternity Ward.

    I can't help wondering when these houses were built, & how close to the eroding edge they were at the time.
    It is common knowledge that much of the east coast is reclaimed low lying marshland, & that it is sandy ~ so why on earth [pun not intended] would houses be permitted to be built without proper sea defences having first been constructed? It's just as irresponsible as building on the flood plains inland...

    • @WFAEXPLOREWITHME
      @WFAEXPLOREWITHME  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      When these houses were built you could not even see the sea from them , they were way back on the big cliff dunes .

    • @timbates2052
      @timbates2052 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hardening the shoreline with "sea defences" is never a good plan. It increases erosion due to "reflection" of the waves which then carry material back to the ocean.

    That hasnt changed for over 20 years the lack of support from Government. Its dreadful and their excuse is always that its a waste of money because the sea will reclaim the land eventually and it will be wasted money. What gets me there is no help for the people who are losing everything. I knew it was bad at Happisburgh but I thought that Hemsby was in a better situation. So sad to see.
