Tsunami reaches Kona Hawaii

- 8.9 earthquake in NE of Japan the Tsunami traveled less than 5 hours to cross the Pacific to reach Kona, Hawaii on March 11th early in the morning. I went to the Kona bay 6:45am to observe this phenomenon up close. I was almost knocked down by a wave ---, a cameraman of the local news caught me in action and said that I would be in the news.
This was shot hours after the largest waves had occurred, which caused the most damage, and that was during the warning period when people had evacuated. By dawn, the alert had been lifted and people could return to the shoreline, but surges like these kept going for hours. In retrospect it would've been safer to keep the evacuation in place longer.

Not the wave but the SEA itself comes back and goes out like a breath. Amazing
The speed of it all is insane.
It's unimaginable what Japan went through.

God, i was there at the same spot this guy was a year before this happened. i've been in those waters, i know how deep it goes, how tall those wall are. to see the water just rise so fast like that, its an uneasy feeling
Why would you stand there?? Even when I was a child I knew to run to high ground if there ever was a tsunami, still a cool video though!
As a person from hawai’i word of warning if there’s ever a big tsunami don’t go walking to the dock to check it out your video won’t even be seen because you won’t be there to upload it

@@tjn7608 Bud, many people in Japan also got similar reports only to be devastated when tsunamis much bigger killed thousands. I've seen the video of Japanese people telling tales of how the tsunami was reported to be small and they ended up being massive. Be careful out there.
If the tsunami reaches a right by 2 or 3 meters then you would have to find higher ground or evacuate
lol this was downtown from where I live and thankfully the waves weren’t no threat they weren’t big enough to hurt anybody or anything
The 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake occurred at 7:46 p.m.. The tsunami waves hit around 3 a.m.. These are residual effects of the waves. Hawaii hasn't suffered a devastating tsunami since 1960, although there's been a couple close calls. It was amazing that there wasn't one in 2011. It all has to do with the angle from which the wave is travelling and the underwater terrain it's travelling over. It was a very lucky night for Hawaii. Hawaii's been very lucky about hurricanes over the past three decades, too.

I swim down at that pier all the time. It was definitely stupid to be standing right there when the tsunami hit because you have no idea how intense it's going to be. The resort I work at just up the coast got hit really hard.

Randy She more like bloody stupid. A tsunami even as minor as this turned out to be can still be very dangerous because as you see the power of the original has dissipated but still strength in it to hit you as if a concrete block hitting you and suck you from under your feet back out to sea. Rather complain about the zoom I'd would have complained about how bloody stupid he was standing that near to a tsunami however weak it looked. One that struck the states in the 60s people watched it come in and it swept over their feet. Some got pulled out to sea and died.

Same as you I am entitled to my opinion here. Obviously you care or you would have made a comment. I don't know what my skin color has to do with my comment. I'm Kama'aina not haole. My family moved to Kona in 1977 and I have massive respect for the aina & its people. If there are tsunami's that aren't a dangerous, tell that to the people in Indonesian. Or to my friends (Nobriga's) whose grandparents lived through yet so many lost their lives in Hilo back in the 60's. Do you study tsunami's?

Super Catman .. ahhh "JUST" ??? That Earthquake was SO POWERFUL it slowed the rotation of the Earth! It rates as a monumental historical event.
@@faithrada Hell indeed. First we were like 'Ah, it's 'just' a 8.5 quake on the Richter scale and it's Japan, they'll probably manage'. And about 30 minutes later regular programming was interrupted as they said it was a 'very likely 9.2'. I can still remember how silent everyone got at work. 9.2 just sounded like an apocalypse. When they also said huge tsunami's were coming I knew it was going to be bad.
I can also still remember how tiny I felt when my dad was watching TV in the evening and had just put it to CNN and I came down and was baffled to see live coverage as possible tsunami's were on their way to Hawaii.
And then, a few days later, the National Meteorological Institute of the Netherlands, where I live, issued an article that seismic registrations at the vault in the province of Limburg had picked up not only the major quake in Japan, but were also showing a very long pulsating-like vibration in the earth's crust, as the earth was bouncing like a basketball about twice a day, that's how much energy was released.
Mind you so far all the videos I've seen of the tsunami are filmed by tourists. The locals are no where in sight. Obviously this guy didnt get the hint! lol By the way, I am from Kona. :)

Just amazing how fast it comes in, goes back out, and comes back in again. All in a little less that 5 minutes.
Probably the best example of how the waves come in and recede quickly.
The amateur videos of the Kailua-Kona waterfront in the early morning during the tsunami are very interesting, but it's also disturbing to see how many people were in the area actually standing on the seawall as this was going on, exposed to danger and possible injury.
Incredible footage, very fascinating! Definitely some of the best footage I've seen from the tsunami waves from Japan that hit Hawaii.
Great documenting of the tsunami surges! I live on the Hilo side and we saw a lot less. The King Kamehameha Hotel just behind you had just gone through a renovation and suffered millions of dollars in damages from the earlier waves. Down in Keleakekua Bay whole houses were swept into the sea.

Nice job documenting it. A tragic moment in history. My heart goes out to Japan and all other people, fish, birds and animals that have been affected by this. I hope the store owners on Alii have insurance and aren't wiped out too much. Kona is my favorite place in the world.
At this point it was just large tidal surges. Not waves like what hit before sunrise.
lavapix No. This was one of the later Tsunami's. tidal surges do not come in and retreat that fast, they follow the rotation of the moon around the Earth.
wdgarraway I live there/here and the first wave hit at 4 am with 8 total. After that it was large tidal surges with no visible waves. Yes, tidal surges from a tsunami do come in this fast. (They are referred to as tidal surges due to no visible waves) When we get smaller tsunami's send energy in this direction that have no wave, we get longer duration tidal surges. Basically a max high and low tide every few minutes and longer duration's as it fades. Lots of messed up currents too.
Energy from a large tsunami like this easily override normal tides.
lavapix A Tsunami's behavior can be very unpredictable. Much depends on the depth and contour of the coast.
Many in Japan were caught off guard when subsequent "waves" came in even stronger.
Point: Never assume to know how the ocean will behave... it COULD cost you your life.

The sirens were shut down around 3A.M. Denny's was packed with tourists so we went to The Pine Tree Cafe(junk version of the Kay's kitchen epic grinds). The cops had Ali'i Drive shut down so we couldn't go to Durty Jakes for a Bloody Mary and the nature show. That would've been the best.
The second surge of water from a tsunami is the most destructive.

I was standing up the street under the big banyan tree. The highest surges were an hour before this video when it was still dark..
It's really a great idea to head to the shore and film an incoming tsunami.

That's the royal kona hotel not the kona surf and it wasn't the kona surf anymore anyways..

Let's stand on the sea wall during a tsunami. One of the reasons the death toll is so high when a big tsunami hits.
He's standing there becuase it is small. How can you die from that until you see a larger one apporche you?
We here in Hawaii, on the big island. I'm in Hilo, on the other (east) side of the island and we did not even get the waves they got in Kona. Thankfully, the destruction was relatively light....not like in Japan.

Makes me wonder which would be worse: A flash flood which takes everything in its path, or a tsunami, which often leaves a lot of damage and debris behind. Almost like trying to figure out which is worse: A tornado or a hurricane.
Hurricanes at least can be tracked.. you have time to get away. Very little warning with Tornadoes.

climbed to over 40 feet in places, more like a killer flash flood than a

Just started watching utube. Found these dated videos of that awfull tsunami from 3/11/2011 in Japan. As I watched the video of the tsunami reaching Kona I felt why couldn't it have been like this in Japan 😢😢😢

Americans never seem to learn,the same thing in Creasant City,Calif they came down to see the waves,forgetting the 1960 tsunami from the Chile earthquake of 9.2 I believe that killed 11 people in Creasant City from the waves,but many lives lost in Japan...they don't seem to understand how unpredicatable tsunami are,look what it did to Japan,just because its coming across the ocean doesn't minimize the danger,in 1700 the Cascadia faultline off the western Canadian,Oregon,Washington coast went off with a 10 magnitude quake,thousands of lives of natives were lost on our coastlines,but more thousands were lost in Japan when the waves hit there,all historically recorded there...2004 tsunami killed 200,000 or more because of ignorance not so much from the locals who had no living memory of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean but tourists from Europe,Asia,Australia who should have known better with the better education system yet still they ran down to the ocean to watch the waves come in killing them in the process...the public needs to educate themselves on these dangerous waves to cut down on the death toll.

When this was happing I live right next kahakai so I kept telling my mom go get my xbox and I knew there would be at least one haole recording the waves
