- Super Mario RPG is about to be released on the Nintendo Switch and as it's one of our favorite games we compare the 2023 release to the 1996 SNES Super Mario RPG via Nintendo Wii U capture. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars 1996 vs 2023 is a drastic upgrade, but it would seem that Nintendo has taken a lot of care to update it in a way that honors the original. Goodness gracious, in a span between April 1994 and January 1997, Square released, among other titles, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy VII. That's just an incredible run.
OG version is more square-enix feeling, while remake is more nintendo style
As someone who never played the original ( never even heard of it tbh ), there is a certain charm that the original has. Could be the choice of color palettes.
Mario for real is killing it this year. Nintendo got bangers

This is almost ps 2 graphics .
The graphics back then were not bad either honestly. Aged pretty well, especially with the help of emulation

Part of the charm of the original version (and quite possibly almost all of the classic Square(Enix) titles was in its simplicity.
The music is so awesome. What a huge remake for Nintendo 😮😮
Mario RPG was originally developed by Squaresoft and the last Mario game release for the SNES
This is the best kind of remake. Where its thr same game only improved visuals.
The remake looks like it adds a dramatic punch to th original game

It does make you wonder how the team wanted the og one to look like how the remake looks, but due to its limitation’s it wasn’t possible. It’s beautiful to see

Nintendo knows the assignment and gets it done. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it but when Nintendo fixes it, they make it 10 times better.

Too bad this game didn't got a sequel back in the day because Nintendo broke their relationship with Square. Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi are great series, but SMRPG is something special and timeless

Not really. This is not the best comparison, a lot of enemies have new animations. It is true that less frames in animations makes things have more oomph depending though.

Seems like they made the game significantly easier, so I'll just stick to the original.
Nope. It's harder in ways. There are special enemies that are way harder that randomly appear, and the timed hits were generally made different and harder to trip up old-comers. Do not write this remake off without playing it lol
@@JeanKP14 Well, looking at the comparison video, enemies seem to take more damage, and attacks deal splash damage for no apparent reason. Also hearing new mechanics like Triple Attacks and Chain make the game too easy.
Great for the new generation. Ill stick to my old RPG .
Some things look worse (specifically in the animation department) but it looks really nice!

Well when games like re4 remake are coming to cell phones its kinda moot at this point to claim. It's the switch, still below last gens graphics. They've gotten their mileage out of it though.

True, with processors that mobile phones have now they can rival last gen systems graphics wise.
