I've been a Genesis fan since 1979 and I've never heard a totally satisfying copy of Nursery Cryme on vinyl or CD ever. It's just not a great recording. But that changed last night! I received a copy of the Atlantic 75 edition of Nursery Cryme and I played it though. And then I played it through again. Incredible! It was like hearing the album for the very first time. The dynamics between the gentle parts and the bombastic moments was astonishing. Very good. In fact, it was these sweet pieces like For Absent Friends and Harlequin that surprised me the most. So intimate and engaging. Musical Box speaks for itself. The ultimate light and shade track. Beware though... because Peter's vocal DOES get lost slightly in the mix at the end (the 2004 Platinum compilation addressed that issue... one of the better moments of the Nick Davis remixes) but this remaster reverts back to the original where I think the 'Now Now Now!' part does get swamped. But that's my only slight gripe with the whole record. Hogweed was wonderful with its tight bass and drum track, particularly during the verses. But it is Fountain of Salmacis that steals the show! The melotron swells are insane. Where they had a tendency to almost reach distortion levels on inferior copies, they soar smoothly on this release. Majestic!! It has a wonderfully powerful presence now, whereas I thought previous versions felt a little flat and lifeless. I'm very happy with this pressing and I'm really looking forward to Trick Of The Tail and Foxtrot next up.
My copy is also on the way as previous commenters have stated. I have an original uK first press, mastered by porky with the large mad hatter label of Foxtrot. It sounds nearly as dead as a doornail! It’s very clean. It’s in excellent shape. I’ve also cleaned it with an ultrasonic cleaner. I then became curious and looked for comments on the Steve Hoffman forum, and most seem to say these early genesis original pressings Suffered because the length of the music on the album was too long and so the sound suffers. The first side, especially on foxtrot is dead. The second side sounds a little better. Other commenters on the forum seem to have noticed that as well. It seems like the 45 RPM pressings resolve that problem as my other Genesis 45 RPM pressings are wonderful. So I have high hopes for Nursery Cryme. I really enjoy your channel and the experience you bring as well as getting to see some of the lovely pressing you have in your collection!
@@obre9523 The Atlantic 75 Nursery Crime is stunning! I have never heard so much detail in an early Genesis recording. The separation of the instruments is immediately evident. Peter Gabriel's voice is clearly in the center stage and more obviously separated from the instruments. You can hear the overtones of his voice. I can finally hear the musicians' playing as people have always described. The packaging is, of course, well done. The Album cover/sleeve has a textured finish befitting the Paul Whitehead art work. I highly recommend it (but I don't know what your pressing sounds like comparatively). I anxiously await the release of Foxtrot.
Great Video Again ! I hope one day you manage to get a copy of (1974 -1975 ? ) Genesis UK 2 Records & Poster Trespass Original & Nursery Crime Original with Flower Mask Peter or Flute, Poster, Genesis Box Set Vol 1. There is also a Genesis 2 Record Box Set Vol 2 with Poster no 2 but never a Genesis Box Set Vol 3 Vol 4 etc, for you to consider for another Genesis, TH-cam Video.
Very interesting video Vincente, thanks. I only have a UK re-issue of this album which I bought in 1976. It is on the pink Small Mad Hatter label with matrix numbers A2/B2. According to Discogs the “Mother stampers” were used for this pressing, although I don’t know if that statement is accurate.I have never thought my copy sounded particularly good and it has been played to death. Consequently, as Genesis are one of my favourite bands, I am going to splash the cash on the AP 75 re-issue and hope that the sound is an improvement on what I already have. The two AP Genesis re-issues released so far are (to my ears & on my system) the best sounding versions of those albums I have heard. Will be curious to hear what you think if you also buy it.
Thanks for the video. I bought my mad hatter in 1973 and it still sounds superb. Acquired a pink scroll later but tbh hardly any difference in sound quality
Hi, I've been a Genesis big fan since 1978, my best loved band all those years. I've bought the Brazilian 1976 edition of Nursery Cryme in January 1981. Until 1982 Brazilian pressing were terrible and simple cover. In 1992 I've bought the imported CD, a totally different experience (with pictures and oh, lyrics). Some years ago I've bought the 2008 EU edition, excellent in my opinion.
Thanks Vicente for the info on my fav Genesis album. I have an early large hatter press which sounds great, as you say, and I have the more recent half speed master (UMC). To my ears this sounds good too, just wondered if you have heard it? Great videos. Thanks again.
Seems like most of the comments here match my opinion. *Nursery Cryme* like *Trespass* was not a good sounding recording. It's cool if you want to have a quiet pressing for the sake of history, but those records sounded "muddy" to me on a UK Charisma LP (nice gatefold design!) from the late '70's and, a US CD from the late '80's. That vague, distant sound has been described by some fans as "mysterious," but it didn't carry forward to *Selling England,* which has always sounded excellent, with solid vocals, elegant guitar & bass... well it's just the business! When I picked up a copy of the Nick Davis remixed *Cryme* CD from 2008, it was a new experience-- clearer vocals, punchy drums, rich keyboard sound & electric guitars that sounded-- electric! There was something going on with the 2-channel tapes from the early '70's and Steve Hackett noticed it too, saying it simply seemed to be the sound Trident studio had at that time.
i found a pink scroll UK pressing for 20 bucks( australian !), has a few pops and scratches but sounds pretty good , i have a better mad hatter copy which came in the box set thingy , with the first few albums in it, listening to the scroll one now sounding great with a bit of volume
I’ve got Atlantic 75 Selling England by the pound. Absolutely no regrets and off the back of that put my order in for Nursery Cryme without a second thought. In fact Trick of the tail on preorder is a cert. Your only regret will be not ordering it sooner…
AT75's Selling England By The Pound sounds great. I notice it even in my low budget system, and beyond having that "low" system it was justified to buy it for how sounded for me. In other cases i pray my friend Francis (he has an excellent system) buy it and share to me a couple of times. Cause there are editions wich remasterings sound excellent but for the zenith of sound is too much money considering my system won't be "au par" with the sound level.
Yes, selling england 75 is great. However, I was disappointed with the Lamb, so ill wait for reviews on Cryme before taking the plunge. Thanks for your input
do you take into account how many times you have to get up and turn the record over?, you ceratainly get more exercise with 45 rpm doubles, if they do the Deads Europee 72 it would have to be on six LPs, lol.....im only half joking, lol
Mine is on the way, but I have to get a new stylus, so I still have to wait. I've only ever heard the 70's U.S. press that I've owed for 20 year, or, so.
I have SEBTP , I have Relayer by Rhino high fidelity, and in both cases have been disappointed, they are alot of money for something that is only marginally better than the modern stock reissues, yes the sleeve is better with laminate etc ,but sound wise I'd recommend the standard issues and save some money, I'm using a fabulous Technics SL 1200G and AUDIO-TECHNICA VM740ML which makes bad records sound good so it's not the equipment, I won't be spending silly money on these 45rpm or Rhino high fidelity vinyl no more.
Hello, ref. new APO edition as double vinyl for me it's annoying, anticlimactic way of listening to an album that for it's duration (for me) doesn't justify to be double (beyond it's a 45RPM). The Classic Records one has Gabriel's voice a bit recessed, but just a little in through my system (a low budget one, less detailed obvious) but i listened to it only once as was brought by a friend when payed me a visit. As i recall it sounded fine but seamed to me like lacking a bit soul. My record is an argentinian edition, not great sound, and in a condition that seams it was used for scratching by a rap dj. (ja ja). Returning to the "double album" matter, the album i agree 100% to be double is Duke. For it's length it's compressed on vinyl and needs to be double. Beyong how good it could sound Nursery Cryme, for me being a double one listening to it will be like listening to 45's singles, anticlimactic and distracting. Saludos Vicente.
At what point do you stop your search for the best sounding copy of a recording? Isn’t it pointless to have a shelf full of the same recording?? It’s a never ending rabbit hole of buying every new reissue of the same material! Just my humble opinion
@ I agree with you on that! Some reissues do sound better than the original. My point was more the people who have 8 copies of the same record and just go down a never ending cycle with limited results on the difference between them!

A2/B2 is the earliest uk pressing. If it doesn't float your boat, you should look elsewhere. Share your opinion of the new AP when it hits home
mine should arrive Sunday.
Share your thoughts with our community. It'd be great

Same stampers, same sound
THANKS GREAT INFOS..GEORGE ROMANIA
Thanks for your loyalty

Glad you enjoy it. NIck davis's remixes never grew on me. Suppose im absolutely attached to originals

No, I hardly ever buy albums coming from a digital source

The early unremastered cds made in Austria sound great. Thanks for your input

yeah its sounding bloody good to my ears, i havent got the greatest stereo in the world, you need to pump up the volume a bit, but yeah great.
Mine arrives today
Please, share your take on the new reissue with us.

Trick of the Tail is announced for release next month.
@ yeah I saw the announcement this morning. Not my favourite album due to tracks like entangled but still excited nonetheless.

Kevin Gray or Bellman?

No experience with modern Rhinos. Great gear, btw.

Agreed on both counts. Duke deserves a double 45. The uk pink scroll (or subsequent represses ) has soul to spare. Thanks for your input. Gracias
I really find the 1985 virgin (UK) CD superior to my old 3 LP copies (UK and US copies from the 70s). Same with the Selling England (1985 virgin CD).
Yes, the unremastered cds are great. I prefer Trespass on cd but for nursery, foxtrot and selling my copies beat them. Just by a hair, to be honest
At what point do you stop your search for the best sounding copy of a recording? Isn’t it pointless to have a shelf full of the same recording?? It’s a never ending rabbit hole of buying every new reissue of the same material! Just my humble opinion
To me, buying a reissue is justified in the rare event that they beat early originals.

@@davepounds8924 I'd sell the worst sounding and stick to the keepers
