I believe you are the only reviewer who's ever got down on his knees, crawled through thickets to show a backpack's capabilities to withstand harsh treatments and remain comfortable while wearing it. You had me sold when you said Malcolm designed it. I have some Hidden Woodsmen gear and quality is never a question. This was so entertaining! Loved it! A absolutely excellent demonstration , of how to assemble a military pack . I stripped my pack off my frame years ago , to use those " round " holes in the frame, to hook in large D -rings to pull my sled in the winter . Works great IMO BTW . I tried a few YEARS ago , to figure how it went back together , and gave up :D But , now on the pack belt . For me a some others I knew in the army . We could NOT carry our packs with the belt riding ON the hips . I tried that a few times , and it rubbed the TOP of my hip bones raw . I learned from a Ranger on my team . I was "" NOT "" a Ranger , but a plain jane , everyday medic . He said to try and place the pad "over " your hip bones , centered on the pad , top to bottom . This was much better for me . I talked to others later , and . A LOT had the same problem with me , but just worked through it until their hips adapted . Keep in mind we wore these things days at a time ... HEAVY . Also , my first CIVILIAN pack I bought ( Osprey ). The REI guy said your hip bones should " mold into " the belt . Then , IDK about now . They could " heat " the belt , and mold / form it "IN" the store . Or it would " mold in " with use . To this day , that Osprey is my go to, comfort pack :D Lastly on the centering the hip belt on the hip bone . If you can carry it riding on TOP of the HB , you will NOT have to tighten the belt as much . Thanks again NICK and dave , I can now source your video for. If and when , I want to put the pack & belt back on the frame . ... gubs
I may never get the Hidden Woodsman pack but I still enjoy your videos so much. Having back problem I am very glad that you're telling people to make sure that the weight should be taken by the belt onto your hips and legs and not on your spine and back muscles.
Having the weight on the hips via kidney belt really saves the ole back. In my opinion for folks with severe back issues it's a good option to wear a load bearing vest with pouches attached to the front. Take care and thanks for watching

I like that pack! Alice style is something too many of us are used to! Ugh! I even made my own Alice frame about 35 years ago from aluminum that had a folding shelf to load a game bag to.

Hey! Great job again! I thought the assembly of the new Alice pack was shown better than any I've ever seen, with lots of attention to the finer details. Climbing through the thicket with the pack on, and Nick mentions the music and ticks, I was waiting to see if you got frustrated and whipped out the machete, lol. But you didn't have to. Head down and let the boonie take the abuse... I also thought the rope use up and down unsure footing was a great addition. I learned a bit about that, too, so thanks! Cheers! Wish I was with ya!

I was just revisiting this video and when you got to the part about the pack falling over, and strapping your wool blanket underneath to mitigate that, it reminded me of something I saw on Blackie Thomas' Ground Pounder Series of TH-cams where he has something called an Alice Frame Shelf that does the same thing as well as allows you to remove the pack and us the shelf to carry other items such as a jerry can, etc. Anyway, I looked those up and they're only about $15 to buy, but someone with your machining and metal fabrication skills could likely fashion something like that, but better. I just thought I'd let you know, in case it was something you might be interested in. Don't work too hard, brother! (shoot, I know you are because it's that time of year again). Take care, anyway!

After watching this video about 5 times over, I've finally decided to snag one! Though in ranger green as I don't have any camo clothes to fit it. Lots of olive drab in my possession though. Cant wait to receive it and put it to the test!! Thank you for this video!
Great video my friend. Makes me want to get the hip and straps for mine. The molle ll straps I use are much thicker but were not made for the Alice. Learned a few things about adjustment too. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain all that. Thank you

I have never used an Alice pack before but they always look very comfortable. I usually have an internal framed rucksack. An osprey 70ltr. Still, watching you disect your equipment so that everyone knows just how it's made and put together, is always entertaining. As is watching you both having fun in the woods, of course. Great information and presentation 😃 This pack looks like a hybrid between the medium and large Alice packs. Medium sized ruck with large exterior pouches. After all the upgrades that I did to my old medium Alice, fastex buckles, extra pouches through the webbing, improved shoulder straps and kidney belt, MSS carrier attached to the bottom, I still love my old pack. This would be a great pack for someone just getting started in camping/survival scenarios, that doesn't have the old stuff laying around. Love your stuff, keep up the great work!

Great attitude you 2 have together great video . I have to say weave been using Alice packs for over 30 years I believe and have never had a failure of any kind and we have put them through hell . The only changes I've made is adding the shelf happy trails .

I humped one of those around in the military for too many years to ever want to use another one again. That had some nice variations from the old ALICE, but its reliance on the old school ALICE frame is an Achilles heel, in my opinion.
Difference is you probably toted twice the weight and probably traveled twice as far. For my short bushcraft trips this thing works for me. Thanks for sharing your experience and thanks for watching

Dave, Excellent explanation and demo of the pack, love the trek through the thickets and down the side of the hill, Nick you just crack me up in every video. That pack complete looks good on the ALICE frame, but, so does the Medium Woodland Camo ALICE pack in mint shape. I think the only visual difference is the fast-tech buckles, But, that's also a cheap mod for the Alice PACK. As far as the Hidden Woodsmen Shoulder straps and Kidney waist belt, well again a cheap mod is adding a set of Molle II Shoulder straps and Kidney waist belt to the ALICE pack. For the cost of the Hidden Woodsmen package I put together two complete Woodland Medium ALICE packs with the Hellcat conversion and a frame for the cost of the Hidden Woodsmen both ALICE medium packs, Molle II shoulder straps and waist belts were all in mint condition. Yes the material maybe different between the packs, but for me I don't think it compensates for the high price. Don't get me wrong I do like the Hidden Woodsmen but I think its just a direct copy of the Medium ALICE. It's just to expensive. I own two Medium one large ALICE packs with frames and one complete set of Woodland Molle II back pack and I'm in the process of putting together a second Molle II back pack. All this is just my opinion about the differences in the cost associated with the packs. I wish I could afford the $320.00 USD Hidden Woodsmen, but, it just doesn't compare to two modded Medium ALICE packs with frames in mint shape.

Great review. I still use my old Alice pack even tough I have more expensive and better hiking packs now. Love the lighter fluid comment! I had a horrible and rainy fly fishing trip in the Appalachian mountains of NC last year. I actually found half a bottle of lighter fluid left at a campsite. I had a roaring fire every night/morning. Even stashed the rest in case it happens again seeing how I am on this creek often thru out the year. Thanks so much Dave & Nick.

Good review. I was checking out this pack on the website. It is a bit pricey but it is made in the good ol' US of A and hopefully the craftsmen have good old fashioned pride in their work. Back when I was on active duty many moons ago, we had the hook and groove buckle on our duty belts. Well the groove had the common nickname for a woman's money maker and it was always placed to the left side of the body. I realized later how my branch thought of left wingers.

I missed where you put your hydration water. All I have for a backpack is a mid nineties LL Bean backpack, which dons as a SCBA pack..which I'm used to donning in 20 sec or so. ~ Straps always out fully to adjust height of the pack, not interfere with clothing/collars(heavy coat). When crawling worn lower in a jiffy, 'n don't have a kidney belt, just a strap. ~ Chest straps are height adjustable which is cool. ~ Shoulder straps are doubled over at the ends(sewn) so can fully extend so as not to wholly undo the strap from the quick cinch tabs. ~ TMI: Learning to don fireman's bunker pants/boots, hood, coat, air mask, helmet, SCBA tank..collar up/and fixed, ear flaps down in 90 seconds took quite a bit of practice. As mentioned we did quite a bit of crawling, and the weight a bit lower felt better for maneuverability. Looks to be a decent pack. Thanks for the vid Dave 'n Nick. Shoulda wore slippery moccasins on the dry leaf hill. yoiks! I've slid a few times, and had to use the trees. But normally I've a shoulder height staff.
I usually carry a separate 2 quart canteen on a strap. I had an L.L. Beam day pack years ago, very comfortable I used it for fly fishing. Thanks for watching
Dave , I have cried so much from laughing I’m dehydrated . These was a good video, enjoyed it. That was a nice looking pack . I have a lc1 and a lc2 and a USMC ILBE rucksack which will hold everything but the kitchen sink. If you don’t have one of them , check it out . And for the Alice pack in the video with the waterproofing coming off the lid , I sprayed mine with Flex seal (black) and after it dried I hit it with OD green camo paint and it looks and worked good. Awesome video and great how to on the assembly! I've been thinking of picking one of these up to go along with my Deepwoods Ruck by Malcom since these are lighter. Also I roll the excess strap up and use the velcro to stop it from unwinding

Great video my friend. Makes me want to get the hip and straps for mine. The molle ll straps I use are much thicker but were not made for the Alice. Learned a few things about adjustment too. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain all that. Thank you

I have never used an Alice pack before but they always look very comfortable. I usually have an internal framed rucksack. An osprey 70ltr. Still, watching you disect your equipment so that everyone knows just how it's made and put together, is always entertaining. As is watching you both having fun in the woods, of course. This pack looks like a hybrid between the medium and large Alice packs.
Medium sized ruck with large exterior pouches.
After all the upgrades that I did to my old medium Alice, fastex buckles, extra pouches through the webbing, improved shoulder straps and kidney belt, MSS carrier attached to the bottom, I still love my old pack.
This would be a great pack for someone just getting started in camping/survival scenarios, that doesn't have the old stuff laying around.

Great attitude you 2 have together great video . I have to say weave been using Alice packs for over 30 years I believe and have never had a failure of any kind and we have put them through hell . The only changes I've made is adding the shelf happy trails .

I humped one of those around in the military for too many years to ever want to use another one again. That had some nice variations from the old ALICE, but its reliance on the old school ALICE frame is an Achilles heel, in my opinion.
Difference is you probably toted twice the weight and probably traveled twice as far. For my short bushcraft trips this thing works for me. Thanks for sharing your experience and thanks for watching

Dave, Excellent explanation and demo of the pack, love the trek through the thickets and down the side of the hill, Nick you just crack me up in every video. That pack complete looks good on the ALICE frame, but, so does the Medium Woodland Camo ALICE pack in mint shape. I think the only visual difference is the fast-tech buckles, But, that's also a cheap mod for the Alice PACK. As far as the Hidden Woodsmen Shoulder straps and Kidney waist belt, well again a cheap mod is adding a set of Molle II Shoulder straps and Kidney waist belt to the ALICE pack. For the cost of the Hidden Woodsmen package I put together two complete Woodland Medium ALICE packs with the Hellcat conversion and a frame for the cost of the Hidden Woodsmen both ALICE medium packs, Molle II shoulder straps and waist belts were all in mint condition. Yes the material maybe different between the packs, but for me I don't think it compensates for the high price. Don't get me wrong I do like the Hidden Woodsmen but I think its just a direct copy of the Medium ALICE. It's just to expensive. I own two Medium one large ALICE packs with frames and one complete set of Woodland Molle II back pack and I'm in the process of putting together a second Molle II back pack. All this is just my opinion about the differences in the cost associated with the packs. I wish I could afford the $320.00 USD Hidden Woodsmen, but, it just doesn't compare to two modded Medium ALICE packs with frames in mint shape.

Great review. I still use my old Alice pack even tough I have more expensive and better hiking packs now. Love the lighter fluid comment! I had a horrible and rainy fly fishing trip in the Appalachian mountains of NC last year. I actually found half a bottle of lighter fluid left at a campsite. I had a roaring fire every night/morning. Even stashed the rest in case it happens again seeing how I am on this creek often thru out the year. Thanks so much Dave & Nick.

Good review. I was checking out this pack on the website. It is a bit pricey but it is made in the good ol' US of A and hopefully the craftsmen have good old fashioned pride in their work. Back when I was on active duty many moons ago, we had the hook and groove buckle on our duty belts. Well the groove had the common nickname for a woman's money maker and it was always placed to the left side of the body. I realized later how my branch thought of left wingers.

I missed where you put your hydration water.
All I have for a backpack is a mid nineties LL Bean backpack, which dons as a SCBA pack..which I'm used to donning in 20 sec or so. ~ Straps always out fully to adjust height of the pack, not interfere with clothing/collars(heavy coat). When crawling worn lower in a jiffy, 'n don't have a kidney belt, just a strap. ~ Chest straps are height adjustable which is cool.
~ Shoulder straps are doubled over at the ends(sewn) so can fully extend so as not to wholly undo the strap from the quick cinch tabs.
~ TMI: Learning to don fireman's bunker pants/boots, hood, coat, air mask, helmet, SCBA tank..collar up/and fixed, ear flaps down in 90 seconds took quite a bit of practice. As mentioned we did quite a bit of crawling, and the weight a bit lower felt better for maneuverability.

Shoulda wore slippery moccasins on the dry leaf hill. yoiks! I've slid a few times, and had to use the trees. But normally I've a shoulder height staff.
oh yeah, dangle type machete/larger knife is a good idea if crawling around, up/down fallen timber methinks.
I usually carry a separate 2 quart canteen on a strap. I had an L.L. Beam day pack years ago, very comfortable I used it for fly fishing. Thanks for watching

Dave , I have cried so much from laughing I’m dehydrated . These was a good video, enjoyed it. That was a nice looking pack . I have a lc1 and a lc2 and a USMC ILBE rucksack which will hold everything but the kitchen sink. If you don’t have one of them , check it out .
And for the Alice pack in the video with the waterproofing coming off the lid , I sprayed mine with Flex seal (black) and after it dried I hit it with OD green camo paint and it looks and worked good.
