  • Heres all you ever wanted to know about pressing comic books but were afraid to ask. This is a pressing 101 video, so nothing here is set in stone. If you press professionally you should know that each book gets a different treatment, based on paper quality, age and wear, if you collect comics you should get a pressing unit and experiment until best results are achieved.
    Enjoy and hit me up with any questions after the jump

    Its amazing to get all the emails from comic enthusiasts who have been inspired by this video to press their own books. That is the purpose this video exists.. Go and purchase your dry mount press machines and experiment until you are comfortable with the results. This is NOT rocket science folks.. The reason why no one ever did a demo like this is because people who own those machines want to get your money for pressing books. Sure if you have 1 or 2 books or even 10 that you need pressed, go and pay someone to do it for you, its cheaper for you overall.. But if youre an avid collector you should own a pressing machine and make those damaged books look might sharp again :)
    Excelsior!

      Is the first heating machine necessary? Or do you think the final press machine is the most important? For example, If I was to use an iron, and then just put the book in the dry mount, would that work too? I'm just trying to see what I can actually afford to invest in. Also, any recommendations on where to find a used or affordable dry mount and/or heating press?

    K sorry for the lack of replies on my part.. Been busy pressing :)
    anthony barrile I use the Technal 500 in the vid, but thats because I leave it overnight on the Seal 200.. If you had a choice to use one machine, go with the Seal 200 and press for 20 min.. Always check after a quick minute to make sure the book is ok, then flip it a couple of times, then cool it off. ***** I suspect that the reason why you are getting your books warped is because you are using a high temperature for too long.. A 150 is recommended, a 100 is even better (with the seal200), but as I said, when I have a large volume of books to press I steam the book on both sides, stick it the technal for a couple of minutes, then leave it in the seal overnight.. Last PeonSanders911 a heat press machine (such as the ones used to press vinyl decals on shirts) is not good because it overheats the book.. You should not use those

      @justinl1629 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrMartinsclub the only suggestion I might make is to use distilled water if you aren't already for the steamer and one thing i've noticed is that heavily waxed paper books like some of the older dark horse sin city ones or new 52 25-40 books need extra care to prevent melting.

    I utilize a Seal 210M for my pressing. Moderns I don't go any higher than 150 degrees for a short period of time. Cool down is an hour and half. I utilize SRP for the bottom, top and middle of the book to protect the spine from any staple indentations. Books turn out great.

    I think the best way to press a comic is by getting 2 heavy large piece of glasses.The heavier the better.
    Put the comic in between with or without cardboards. It doesn't matter.
    You can even put mire then 2 comics at a time.
    May not even have to wait a day or more for results,

  • @chrischase5090

    You do not need a fancy press to do this. Put a tray of water in your oven on the lower rack. Put two pizza stones on the top rack. Preheat to 200F. cover your book front and back with oven paper. put the wrapped book between the two warm stones. Let the book "cook" for 3-4 minutes. Repeat if needed.

    Have a SEAL 200 set up,ready-to-go...You mentioned that no heat is used with the SEAL;
    Is that the case when using the SEAL only, or is moisture/tacking iron process implemented first, then set heat low on the SEAL, leaving it over-night ? Lastly, is Teflon paper better than
    plain paper with the SEAL,or only used with the Technal? Truly appreciate the benefit of your experience;-)

  • @ForgotMyDemonName
    @ForgotMyDemonName 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are pressing staple indents into most, if not every, page from front to back like this. Check the insides on some of your press jobs. You may be fixing some cover issues but are adding new ones internally. And yes, those will bring down your grade.

    • @MrMartinsclub
      @MrMartinsclub  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SabresHockey66 I should really do another tutorial as I didnt cover all the basics. I did not use an insert protection on the centerfold as it was not necessary with this comic. I use that only with moderns as the paper material is much thinner with those and yes that problem will occur if that is not applied

    • @ForgotMyDemonName
      @ForgotMyDemonName 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrMartinsclub another tutorial would be excellent. what do you use for your staple insert? I have used the free comic preview handouts you can get at most shops to good effect. There is always the open book method as well though that does require refolding a bit

    • @MrMartinsclub
      @MrMartinsclub  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SabresHockey66 I just use a regular backing board for inserts. I actually started using them to sandwich the book on both ends since more often than not a book will get warped if exposed to excessive heat. I must say that recently I am actually getting better results with the Technal than the Seal. For some reason it presses alot tighter, I may have to elevate the foam on the Seal a tad more to achieve equal results. We'll see

    • @ForgotMyDemonName
      @ForgotMyDemonName 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrMartinsclub Does the backing board not press a line into the book? the comic is being pressed hard around the board and I feel like getting two boards into the middle of the book around the staples could press something in. obviously you are having success, just asking. the previews are just paper and absorb the dents without anything to damage the comic.

    • @MrMartinsclub
      @MrMartinsclub  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SabresHockey66 Negative. Ive subbed a few books after pressing and gotten 9.8s. pressing should really be done on moderns for 9.8s and coppers to a degree. It really has to do with the type of paper being used on moderns. They squash so easily and in seconds. Then its on to the cold plates to press them even

  • @ginob615
    @ginob615 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Has anyone had any decent results with a Heat Press rather than a Dry Mount press? The heat press machines are less expensive and easy to come by, but if the dry mount is the way to go, then so be it!

  • @PeonSanders911
    @PeonSanders911 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    would a "Heat press" machine work? or do you need a "dry mount press"? the price difference between the two is considerable. I found a new 15x15 "heat press" for $250 opposed to $1000 for a "dry mount press" ( ebay has them cheaper, but I dont like buying used)

    • @thatisamazing912

    • @bigbabysld
      @bigbabysld 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      agreed, this is wrong...don't put an iron to your books people, the steam, moisture and heat will ruin the books. Take the loss on the book, don't make it worse, it may not be in fine + condition but even in very good condition you can still get something for it. not worth it.

    • @MrMartinsclub
      @MrMartinsclub  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. There are no "trade secrets" for dry cleaning a book. It simply involves wiping the surface of the book clean with a dry cloth repeatedly and carefully. Stains simply cannot be removed UNLESS you are using restoration substances

    • @funeralbillii9172
      @funeralbillii9172 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can search on Amazon for Clothes Steamer, there are a few different ones but they all do the same thing. The difference in price over the $15 steamer and the $25 steamer is that one holds more water therefore you don't need to refill it as often. Also, the smaller one will produce the steam quicker as it has less water to heat, but after you let either one heat up it doesn't matter as the steam will be ready each time. Hope this helps.

Isn't your personal time worth more than that?
