I haven't done any cleaning or pressing yet. I have mainly been watching videos to learn how to do it. Thanks for putting your mishaps out here for those of us who are new to this to learn from. My heart ached over the Superman/Flash comic. That looked painful.
Repent and trust in Jesus. We all deserve Hell for our sins, such as lying lusting coveting and more. We can't save ourselves, but Jesus can save us. He died on the cross to save us for our sins and rose from the grave defeating death and Hell. You must put your faith in him only. He is the only way to Heaven. Repent and trust in Jesus. Romans 6:23 John 3:16❤😊❤❤

As someone who has dry cleaned, humidified, and pressed thousands of books I can tell you most people use way too much pressure. You should have your press adjusted to only give you the lightest bit of resistance possible when closing. If you want to add pressure, don’t use the knob. Put another comic board over the book. It should not take any effort to close the press. If it does, you MUST lighten up that pressure.
I know we are all afraid to tell of our mishaps so thanks for telling of yours. Great Video. I was erasing Peter Parker #64 on the front cover too soon after I had applied humidity and erased the gloss off. 😢

I've ripped a few covers in my time, for sure, but my biggest fail was on a copy of Fantatsic Four 244. The cover had some minor waves in it, but otherwise the book was a 9.2 or 9.4. I cleaned and steamed & put it in the press, forgetting I had last used it to do a shirt. So, instead of a nominal temperature for pressing comics: 350 degrees. :( sigh. The pinks & reds on that cover ran through to the other side and one wave in the cover became a wrinkle in the 60-90 seconds it was in the press. It's in my "save for later" box now.

I haven't had any mishaps with pressing to date, but I have had some with dry cleaning comics. That being said I have yet to attempt a square bound book so I am nervous about that as I have some square bound books I want to send off to CGC for grading. I had never heard of the peroxide method of whitening books, I have been utilizing the blue light method with some pretty good success so far.
I hear ya @jthomascruz! I have 2 Marvel Graphic Novel #4s that are just sitting there because I'm too scared to pressem! And I love pressing books. I need to try out on another book first.
I did this exact same thing with an absorene eraser on a daredevil book I was cleaning up. The eraser caught the edge and put a 1/4 inch tear in my back cover. Painful

One of my tricks to prevent creating too much pressure is to simply close the press and tighten the adjustment knob to the point when I can't turn it any further with my thumb and index finger. I'll reopen the press and close it again to "feel" how much pressure the press is creating, and it it's too much or too little, I'll adjust accordingly. To prevent ripping or creasing the corners when dry cleaning, I typically lay a backing board on the book and work in sections will reduces the eraser "grabbing" a tear edge or loose corner

I feel your pain. I've forgotten SRP paper and ended up with ink loss before. Most recently, I tried a golden age aqueous bath solution on a silver age comic and it lost hundreds of flecks of ink. Looks like someone shook their dandruff off on it. It whitened as I'd hoped, but overall, it's definitely worse than before.
I've been cleaning and pressing for 3 years. I know it's commonly thought that sunken staples cannot be fixed but I have a technique that fixes sunken staples. I'm not sure why so many are dogmatic that sunken staples can't be fixed. I just fixed a bad pressing job that another pressing did on an ASM 361 two nights ago.
Yeah Ive fixed it as well on another book. I basically just treated it like reversing a spine roll. Flattened it from the inner spine and reset it. But on this instance there were tares by the staple, probably cause i also added too much humidity to that spot.
Collecting comics is a particular skill set, cleaning and pressing is a completely different skill set that requires training and materials that have nothing to do with comics. Many comic collectors forget that. If you don’t really love the whole process of cleaning and pressing I’d leave it it to the professionals.
Well said! Its become one of my favorite aspects of the hobby as a whole. Theres a relationship you develop with your books when you bring them to the condition they are in. Very rewarding and fun
This is why I've been hesitant on getting books "professionallly" pressed and cleaned. My high 9.8 grade candidate books could turn into 8.0 or worse. My 6-7 as is books, hoping to get them to a 8-8.5 could turn into 3's wity my luck. What kind of compensation would I even get if these books got ruined? Oh, my bad, here's your 25 dollars back.. You're pretty much a pro at cleaning and pressing, and you've even made mistakes that cost u thousands on your own books.
If I had a perfect looking book with the exception of just a small piece of tape no more than an inch long on the bottom left-hand corner, how much would that bring the value down?
Makes me feel a little bit better about screwing up a Fantastic Four #82 vol.01 (which I only paid $10 for) but yeah - it went from a solid 7.5 down to a 2.0 oops!
Many Ultimate Fallout #4 have been ruined by pressing, but yet CGC still gave them 9.8 graded. Everyone knows the back of UF4 have crease down the center from the poly bag. Many bad pressers pressed them so harf and hot trying to remove the crease, that the staple ruptured the back cover. This was NOT a manufacturing defect, this was done in after market pressing. So CGC, PLEASE STOP grading these as 9.8!!! If you have a CGC 9.8 UF4, check ypur back cover and see if either or both staples are protruding through. I have noticed nearly 10% are like this. CGC is complete garbage.
Why are you doing this to big books if you don’t have years of experience??? You are destroying key books because why???? Damn bro. Work on dollar book for a few YEARS!
In no skill in life, does YEARS of experience completely exempt you from mistakes… Every single mistake that I made, i knew why it happened before i made it. Like i said…lack of patience, carelessness, distractions will lead any person to a mistake. Ive been doing this for years.

Whitening is obtainable to a degree without peroxide 👍🏼
Just depends on severity. Square bounds can be tricky for sure

My biggest mishaps have been tape pulls. I did put a 1" tear in the back cover of my high-grade ASM 86 cleaning with an art eraser though.
Ouch! Happens to all of us.
I started using scotch wall safe tape, holds well and pulls no inks. 👍🏼

Gah! Yeah its a risky game out there especially with some if these advanced techniques. Never easy pill to swallow

Sounds like in many cases it's probably best to just leave things as they are.
Ive gained thousands more in value by not… but good judgement of when to leave it alone is important
