You'll save a $1000 if you skip overpriced Starbucks...

I work at Starbucks, and I gotta say that water is the most important factor. Starbucks water is fine, but filtered sink water has a neutral flavor, which allows the coffee flavor to stick out.

A pinch of salt thrown into the grinds helps remove some of the bitterness.

So, I've been doing it wrong.
I put regular cold tap water in the pot
I put 3tbsp ground coffee in the filter, then turn it on.
I don't put salt in the coffee, but, I know restaurant's do.
I didn't know that's why they put salt in the coffee, to take some of the bitterness out.
    I think I'll give it a try.
    I'll either like it, or I won't.
    I'll either notice the difference
    Or I won't.

Why is the 2nd highest ranked coffee blend pre-ground, higher than most whole bean coffee, if grinding the beans yourself is so important?

  • @brandonneilson8548

Yeah I save a lot more money making it at home
    2.50 a coffee roughly
    X2 5.00
    5 days a week roughly
    25.00
    52 weeks a year
    1,300.00 a year
    Damn

I don’t know about saving $200 a year. If you get into a variety of beans that may cost anywhere between $12-$20 lb you can really spend the money. Depends on how much one likes their cup of Joe.

For cones I use a gold filter to eliminate the taste of paper in the coffee but I was wondering if any of your testers favored using a French Press as I do. I use mine with French Roast coffee and it produces a coffee with a very full bodied flavor.

Please tell me that you don’t press it all the way down! If you do, you disrupting the coffee bed, which creates inconsistent flavor and even bitterness. The best way is to let the grounds settle at the bottom for about five minutes. Then you want to press the press down to the very top of the water. Then you pour you coffee.

I think the math is a bit wrong there about saving $200 a year; unless you are comparing really crap coffee outside vs premium coffee at home. There should be a larger gap between premium home coffee vs premium made coffee. If not, then I rather spend that $3.50 a week and have my coffee made. I think is more like $750/year.

Any recommendations for a good french press coffee? I *think* I like a medium-dark, choclatey, mellow brew. Nothing has ever been quite right, though a true Kona came close.
The search has been a nice reason to explore, but I want a 'daily driver' as James Hoffman says, and no luck so far 😔

bleh filters are terrible for coffee, they absorb the fine and delicate oils that make coffee what it is, you can see the oils floating in the right light on top of the coffee with rainbow colors if done right, use a French Press, it's like one of life's ultimate cheat codes, it's cheap and makes the best coffee possible

My secret was taught to me by my mum:
    - Get your favourite mug
    - Full it up with milk of your choice (I use soy nowadays, but for most people normal full-cream)
    - Grab a mini coffee pan (any small pan should be fine)
    - Heat the milk up on the stove and wait until the reaches boiling point - I personally have never counted the amount of minutes, I just watch the stove carefully, and how well the milk will boil greatly depends on what milk you’re using
    - While the milk is on the stove in-between time (always keep a close eye on the milk) grab regular coffee grinds from store, add sugar. I like to use brown sugar. The amount of sugar really depends on whether you want a sweeter coffee or a more balanced coffee. I personally like a perfect mix of both that coffee taste and the softness of sugar combined, so I grab a small but hypothetically equal amount. What works best for most people is an average amount of each which would be one teaspoon. A lot of people like adding more sugar than coffee itself, so for in that case, two teaspoon of sugar
-- Once those are in, heat the kettle
    - Pour a very minimal (this is crucial) amount of hot water from the kettle. Almost a droplet. Overpouring is the biggest mistake I would say in this process, and the coffee can’t be fixed at that point if you make that mistake
    - Then what you want to do is mix with a mini spoon. It’ll look try at first since you’ve placed a small amount, but trust the process and mix even if it sticks to the spoon. You’ll know when to stop when the brew turns a more paler shade of brown, and it should look like a sort thick paste
-- Grab the milk and pour a little bit, mix again, the pour the whole thing and mix again (this is quick, you don’t have to worry to much about the same mixing, maybe 4-5 stirs) and walla, you have it. Homemade coffee. I personally find it better than any store bought coffee I’ve ever tasted, and don’t have coffee out unless I want an iced-coffee frappe for something different to enjoy a day out. But truly nothing compares (in my mum and my own opinion) to this method of homemade coffee is way better than anything a machine dan produce. It’s empowering especially to have control of the amount you want of everything in that coffee
*also, to clean the pan, put cold water in it straight after. The excess of the milk will be easy to wipe out

Biggest tip: DON'T USE TAP WATER. Use a bottle of water, that should be enough for a couple of cups.

please explain why would that be wrong? Im not an expert but I dont really dont understand why is it bad to drink coffee with metal spoon*?! I never had a coffee in a coffee bar here in europe in any country I visited without metal spoon.

mudza92 probably because you would get that metallic taste from the spoon which would affect the taste of the coffee
