    I had stock explorer intakes on my 89LX back in 2000 and they def helped over the stock one. Car was mildly modified. B cam, ported stock heads, exhaust, gears, etc... I swapped the just the upper over to a 93 Lightning GT40 upper. No other changes. And noticed a HUGE improvement in power and RPM. Breathed ALOT better!! I'm still running the explorer lower/ lightning upper and TB today but ported and it's on a 308cid with a comp cam XE274HR cam and 192cc Canfields.

    I picked up a 96 Explorer GT40 to go in my Comet, my profile pic car.
    Initially I was going to go back with a carb setup after swapping in a healthy cam. I changed my mind and decided to go with EFI as most of the parts are already on the engine when I got it.
    Now I'm back and forth depending on what day of the week. The GT40 should have better low RPM torque than an Edelbrock RPM, but the RPM should have better top end and if I do swap on a set of AFR heads the Explorer/GT40 intake would be my limiting factor.
    I guess as all things I'll finally decide how I'll put the car together like the actual *day* of we complete the engine. lol
    There is something to be said for my current config though, Autolite 4100, Performer intake, longtubes, duals and an AOD. 24 mpg out of a 1974 302 in a Mercury Comet.
    I should at least be able to match that with the new engine regardless of carb or EFI, however, with EFI my city won't drop to 12 mpg.

    Well guess I know what I’m doing as far as an upper and lower intake. I am going to see if they will let me bring the upper and lower into my work and sand blast them. Then I will powder coat it maybe. Also I may pick up some explorer heads too and machine them at work if they let me. All of this is if they allow me. The sand blast they probably will, but the machining part probably not :(

      mustangeric13: The bone stock intake, much like the stock heads, is completely terrible. Case closed. I put a Trick Flow intake on my 1990 Gt when it still had stock heads. Made a big difference.

    • @eriv4735
      @eriv4735 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jarrod Edelen If the intake and headers were done at the same time then your claim MIGHT sound plausible but is very unlikely but 27hp from just an intake swap is not happening..

    • @glenwaldrop8166
      @glenwaldrop8166 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There may have been something wrong with his original setup.
      Also, he'd already done headers, but if the intake is the restriction then that's all she'll do. The intake swap removed the intake restriction and allowed the headers to actually do their job.

    I just put on an explorer intake ported by tmoss. combined with trickflow heads and e303 cam, car has tons of torque. great video, im glad I picked up the explorer intake, it was only $150 for it, pus another$ 200 for porting. worth every penny.

    Am I the only one that never liked the GT40 intake? I'd get an exploder intake any day over a GT40 even if i found them.for the same price (I'd probably sell the GT40). Exploder intake, shorten the runners 1 3/4" and make an extra 20hp more than if it was left stock then port and.polish it for even more power

    I’ve got a question, I’ve been chasing down a pinging issue at 3500-4000 rpm at open throttle and goes away at half throttle. Timing is at 10 degrees and running 93 octane. Stock engine with a 65mm throttle and kn filter stock air box. My only idea would be the ecu changing timing. Any ideas? Mileage is about 140000

    I know this is old but I am new to the 5.0 game. It may not be relevant to mustang guys, but I have been told many times the 5.0 truck is better than the mustang. Can anyone point me to any data to determine if that is true? I have a truck - so i don’t want to chase something if what I have is already a better option.

    • @GrandTouringConcepts
      @GrandTouringConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's bit of a confused myth, let me shed some light.
      The truck lower manifold flows a little better than the Mustang, but the longer runner length of the truck upper manifold develops torque in a lower rev range.
      The Mustang upper has shorter runners which promote better high rpm (if you consider 5200-6000 high) power vs the truck.
      Of course the truck lower is non-intechangeable with a Mustang due to port shape and layout so its a bit of a moot point about the lower manifold flow.
      Basically use the car one (or an aftermarket piece) for sport performance applications and stick with the truck manifold for work duty.

    You want to display a gt40 intake. Why take it out of use?

    • @GrandTouringConcepts
      @GrandTouringConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Basically its a matter of the GT40 intake doesn't support big power, while cast Cobra and Explorer pieces can be ported for quite a bit higher power ceiling. There are quite a few GT40 uppers being traded around in the collector market, while the bog standard junkyard Explorer gives the same performance to most of the budget minded folks. The GT40 is a visual stunner, but is a handicap to anyone building anything that isn't a nostalgia/retro engine. That's why I would choose to display one.
