I bought an old Volvo V70 with a 2.4 petrol engine. I'm not really sure why, although I do have a little bit of a soft spot for Swedish cars. Let's take it for a drive and see what its like.

@@Oldsmobile69 True, but I've had Merc and BMW and everything that goes wrong with them is main dealer only and another £400 down the toilet. Haven't had any bills like that since getting a V70 - well, maybe the odd one, but not every damn time.
I've not driven anything else for over 20 years, I love my Volvo.

@@jdcoffey6 that is a PSA diesel (from the Ford era of Volvo Cars company). they even put in s80, v70 till 2012. the 2.0 is way better than the 1.6. Latter was extremly weak and prone to several proble.. BTW I drive a 2.4 petrol S80 (same engine as in the video) with half a miliom km.. It is funny that is has no sale value at all, but I dont care, I do all the maintenance and keep enjoying it.

As a Swede I can confirm that there are v70s everywhere in Sweden. It's been the best selling car for the past 20 years. Roughly 25-30k units a year!

The happiest day of my life was when my old green (aren't they all green?) V70 left for the last time. Of course, my ex-wife was driving it. I never told her it was due for a timing belt.

I wouldn’t consider it if I didn’t have a good-sized, dry, well-lit garage and the tools to take it on. Yes , capable enough to have done most of my own mechanic work on my rigs ,,, but not capable enough to have made it to a financial situation in which I could pay someone ELSE to do it at my age ! Great car, had one years ago (same age as this). Did 100k excellent miles in it. One thing you didn't mention - this was designed from scratch as an estate car. All it's rival estates (BMW, Mercs etc) were 'add-ons' to cars designed principally as saloons. So the V70 ride and handling was designed in.
Really? The Mark I V70s look like they evolved slightly from the 850s (at least superficially)

I've owned 2 V70's last one (2004) was hit last month by a tractor side on. You could still open both doors and the central locking still work. Bullet-proof. 👍

@@kaptein1247 You don't need a car to be some sort of Mad Max tribute act to be a car you'd want to be reliable... I own a V70 because it's reliable and practical - the fact it's big enough to sleep in and will probably live longer than I will is just a nice bonus.

I bought my Volvo V70 in 2001 and still have it. Tough, reliable, comfortable and big enough. I never expected to keep it this long but it owes me nothing, so why not keep it going?

@@lukemallory7832 Looks like he doesn't want to tell you , I have an s80 the only disadvantages is , its not an estate or a rear wheel drive , but other than that it's great and reliable nearly everything you would want from a car.
Ditto - except a 2004 model. 270000 miles and counting… Still quick, still efficient, still smooth, still comfortable and still rust free. Why settle for anything less?
@@lukemallory7832 I have only been recently introduced to Volvo's ( owner / driver wise ) , by my friend at work ( who's a complete petrol head) , bought the s80 2.4 five cylinder 2002 Volvo from someone else who works here for £250 , he sold it because of personal problems and just wanted to get rid of it , anyway ,my friend did the timing belt , water pump e t c and serviced drove it a while and talked me into buying it ( finally) because I will need a reliable car next year , a lovely sounding engine and drives very well all the mod cons a driver will want ( within reason of course ) ,Volvo hooked now ,,,, strong word of advice ,,,, stay away from the Ford owned ( influenced) Volvo's from about 2004 or five to late 2014 , they are fords with Volvo badges .

Father drove multiple V70s now on his third. Awesome car. Will always recognize the famous v70 5 cylinder sound.
Bought a 58 plated 2.4 diesel V70 estate in Jan 2019 as my disabled wife could no longer climb up into the 16 year old Merc ML320. Needed something I could get her, her wheelchair, walking frame, walking stick & dog into & the V70 seemed to be the largest estate I could find. Haven't been disappointed yet.
I have massive respect and admiration for these cars, they really are absolute tanks that will last forever.
When I buy a pair of jeans and a pair of trainers I will probably have about £360 left over

Its such a shame that Volvo will never be like these again.
On the plus side though, those of us with P2 cars already can just keep maintaining them and look forward to their value increasing now lol.
Actually, the V70's arent even what they were. It stopped with the 940/960.
@@Gias1 Maybe in terms of ultimate block-of-granite solid build, but don't forget the 960 white block engines had a bit of a reputation. Personally i feel like the Euro III P2 cars are the best blend of solidity, longevity and modern comforts. (Then again, i am a little biased lol) Even if i wasn't biased i think I'd probably want a 945 but with a D5244T engine.
@@Gias1 I've owned 16 Volvos - 120, several 140s, 240s, now my S60R. I can't fault the P2. It's stayed under me for 200,000 miles so far, only 3 others of that 16 have gone that far. None of the turbo bricks did, and none with as little work as the R.
The new Volvos are not like these at all, they are much better

More room inside than most modern bloated SUV's.
Also FAR more attention to detail, ergonomics and dependability! Also it stands out in a crowd! It doen't even resemble all of the "look-alike" SUV's made here in the States!

V70 is big car outside, but small inside, except the trunk.
Like leg room on rear seats is one of the worst i have ever seen in a car that big.
@@trumpjongun8831 Thats weird, my C30 has the second most leg room out of our families cars. Second only to my mums big Toyota Avensis Verso (Corolla verso's bigger cousin). And thats a much smaller car, it does sacrifice boot space for that though.

We love our V 70 , I live in Sweden and we use it for all our road trips with our 3 children in the back packed with skis or bikes ,luggage,etc. bigger than our friends SUV s, great car and a Swedish institution 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️

I also impulse-bought a V70 for £400, from 2001, and also spent another £400 or so on it, and I completely love it! She's solid and reliable and was definitely a good choice.
I can see why the police used them.
I've had two V70s in the US and Europe for years. my last one I had out in the California desert and would drive it off road and it never missed a Beat. wonderful wonderful cars. to own Volvo is to love it.
They are so strong, they will last for years when looked after and maintained well!

Makes me think. I had the pleasure of owning and driving a Volvo XC70 D5 from 65000 to 130000 miles (not a direct comparison but a reasonable 'same stable view if you like').. It never let me down, yes it was a bit short of modern day tech and the steering was annoyingly vague to the point of being tiring, so..... I convinced myself that I need a change, a sharper drive and some modern day gizmos (and wanted to return to a higher driving position). I part-exchanged it for Range Rover Evoque Puretech SD4. Well the Evoque its lovely to drive capable and also an unreliable money pit. If I had kept the Volvo, it will still be running (I guess for another 100k), it would have been much more useful and done everything that is required. Conclusion: If I had kept it, I would have at least £22k more in the bank and a very good albeit not perfect car. The Range Rover is nice.... but not that nice and I think in time I will probably return to an old Volvo.

Friend of mine has the 2.4 running on LPG and it's done over 800.000 kilometers, great cars
And i had the same configuration, if it wasn't for the crash, i'd be still running my V70 :)
Dpman was the LPG fitted to the car from new or attached after purchase? Not important I guess but I would like to know...
@@celtic1522 mine V70 came fitted for German market, but my next Volvo S80 i installed my own LPG for about 800 euros, that pays back in about 6 months.

I had a 850 T5 was an amazing car quick and very comfortable always felt like you could drive through a house and not worry.

My dad had a S70 2.5t (went like 💩 off a shovel) and had an 850 before that. Those old Volvos have a certain smell and feeling which you can’t beat. Seriously considering one too
I owned a Volvo V70, I enjoyed everything about it. It's a very good car.
I've been driving my '04 xc70 for a while now, and I adore it; rugged but amply comfortable. I cheekily refer to it as my luxury lumber hauler.

We have such an V70, now he is 18 years old and driven 590.000 KM, with the first engine and gearbox. No rost or something.

I love the look and power of these cars - I also can really appreciate the longevity of them lasting as well as the fact that they are built for harsh climates. Great review! My family is advising me to go with a Japanese car and they’re pretty great but this Volvo is far more tempting. 😄
I have a 2001 with almost 200k on it, and an LPG conversion. It is silky smooth, pulls like a bear, and gets equivalent to almost 60mpg with zero emissions. Love it!
I'm getting a 2002 v70 2.4 gasoline on thirsday. Do you know if they drag good? I mean i didnt try go past 80 km/t on the test drive, but like, going from 80km/t to 100 km/t in a overpass, is it gonna be fast?

I drive a Volvo s60 2t, 2002 mod and I love the car, had it for ten years and plan to keep it for ten more.
Love my 1999 V70. Names were always changing for that car. From "The Hurse" to "The white dragon", to even as simple as "The Brick". I hope to continue using it on the road for years to come.

I’ve owned 4 Volvo’s (in the states) loved them all. One of the more underrated brands it seems.
Spent an impromptu night at Stonehenge on the Summer solstice in the back of a V70 7 seater - four of us! 2 adults, 2 children. Great fun! Brilliant car.
Now running an 2004 (54) Audi Allroad Quattro Tdi V6 7 seater manual with just over a quarter of a million miles - fully optioned bar leather - £700 over three years ago! WIN!

I spent 2 years of my career working for a Swedish multinational and they had an interesting policy regarding Company cars, you could have any car you wanted as long as it was a white V70. Their rationale was that their employees were an important investment and if you were out there driving on company business they wanted you to be as safe as possible. It also helped that Volvo was their biggest customer, so every time they bought a Volvo they sold more of their components.
I love these reviews and his style and candour... I would buy a car from him anytime. Would love his job. And I had a V70 XC and loved it

My parents have one from 2001, they have it since i was 2 and my father always says that it's the greatest car he has ever owned, you said it kind of becomes a member of the family and in our case it really is (i hope he will give it to me when i get my drivers license when i'll turn 18 this year).

I'm glad someone else agrees with my sentiment... "You can still look successful but don't look conceited [in a Volvo]." I really loved my 2004 s60 2.5T. It drove well and I felt great driving it. I also felt police didn't bother me much. What I didn't love were the repair costs. Maybe I just needed to find a cheaper mechanic but I was worried if I didn't take it to an imported car mechanic, someone else would screw it up. And call me crazy but what I really loved about my car was the little marsupial pouches in the front seats. It was just a great place to stash cigarettes, a lighter, a vaporizer, or a phone, or money... or whatever... just reach between your legs and you got it.
I love that pouch. My phone goes in there and stays there until i take the key out at the end of the journey.
1st & last time i got my finger trapped in a car door was a volvo let me tell you it bloody hurt they have absolutely no give nearly lost my finger they that well built 👍
Another great review! When I was stationed in Germany during the 90’s the officers favourite car was the Volvo estate. They all had them with the obligatory golden retriever in the boot lol
I've had Volvo cars for over 30 yrs now. My last one, was a 'classic' V70 and I sold that to a chap about 8 years ago who still drives it. I sold it to help me buy my current car, a Volvo V70 SE 2.5 T with all the 'toys'. It's perfect for me. I am a carer for my wife, who needs a wheelchair. It goes straight in the load space of my Volvo. It's very reliable. I love them. One word of warning my friend. Make sure you keep the drain hole clear on your sunroof. After a lot of rain when the car car was stood for about 2 weeks, it flooded the carpets. It was in my local garage for 3 weeks being dried out, new yaw sensor and power amp / media centre fitted (parts from ebay luckily, sourced by my garage). Cost was around £560. A lot, but where could I get a replacement car which does all that the V70 can do? Nowhere . . .
In finland a facelift like this one in the video would go for a couple of grand easily. You got a damn nice deal

Bought a Volvo V50 estate 2 years ago as my work/cycle carrier vehicle then upgraded last year to the V60 estate 2012. Full dealer service history and 112,000 miles... love the comfort and the sweet 1.6 diesel engine for town driving. Cracking cars and good review Matt.

The rear hatch struts are actually hidden inside the roofliners up at the rear corners. And yes, the result is very neat! I must say your knowledge of this car is commendable considering the short time you've owned it. Good review.
They're very neat indeed, until they start leaking, then it becomes a mess and a pain in the ass to replace...

I keep coming back to this video every couple of months, at 21 I owned a V70 (but the cooler version with wipers for the lights), a BMW 3 series and Audi A5. 2 years later I have sold the two German coupes and left with the V70, favourite car of all time.

I've owned 2; both 7 seaters. Awesome car, unrivalled for comfort, practicality and reliability. When the kids grew up I wanted a convertible, so obviously bought a C70. Another awesome car that, because it's not German, gets overlooked and I get another bargain luxury car. Long live Volvo.
My parents bought this Volvo v70 from dealership back in 2003 so I have known this car my whole life and for my first car they gave me this car...I love it. Now I have new volvo v90 but I decided to keep the volvo v70 for emergencies, it's such a dependable car there's no point selling it. It indeed is a part of family for over 20 years! Volvo has always soft spot in my heart

Totally agree about the “Lexus perception”. No one will judge you negatively for turning up in a nice Volvo. My first rally car was a Volvo 740 Estate (weird I know - but indestructible).

bigwo56 You’ll be glad to hear we did not do very well in the Volvo. But not entirely the car’s fault - we had no idea what we were doing. We have subsequently gone on to win the championship in a Rav4. My bizarre choice of race cars continues to this day.

Great cars! Had 2003,5 and now I'm a happy owner of a last 5 cylinder v70 mk3. My dad still runs my first 03 version and he's never had problems even with this 16 years old Swedish 🇸🇪 well made car
Thanks for sharing your experience with the V70. We recently inherited a 2002 V70 with 85,000 miles on the odometer. It's a pleasure to drive on the freeway or open road, but not so great in the city, not nearly as agile as my 2002 Honda CR-V. But thinking about a road trip, possibly up the California coast to Oregon, choosing the Volvo's a no-brainer, especially considering the sleeping room with the back seats down.
Another straightforward, honest, review. You tell it like it is. I always liked the Volvos, but way too big for my needs.

There not to big when you get hit by a truck! I always consider that
I don't have kids or a dog, but I still have a V70. It's built like a tank, it's good on fuel (I have a diesel) and you can sleep in the back it's that big. Visibility is good as well - try one, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It doesn't feel as big as it really is.
I have just traded my 2009 T6 V70 after ten years ownership. Apart from services I did not have to spend anything on this car. The reason I traded was silly things started failing, window washer tubes, rear struts on tailgate, l.e.d. rear lights became dim. My wife is still angry that I got rid of this car and she refuses to drive the replacement. Such is life.
I wouldn't want to get rid of it either, though..
I've had 6 V70s since 2000 and feel really sad that they've stopped making them. My wife and I, love touring holidays and the V70 is perfect. Thanks for a great vid.
I have a 2005 S60 2.5T manual with 218.000 km on it. Love it! 210 hp, goes like a train. Have it for 5 years now and I'm not even thinking about selling it. Great vid!

I've owned at least 10 maybe more different older Volvo's over the years.... Totally love them and Will always buy into them. That is a steal for 800 into it. I currently have a 1998 v70 i bought for 1150 lol love it, super comfy, super easy to work on. ALWAYS can find videos step by step to do anything it!! LOVE VOLVOS

Matt - I've had 2 Volvo V70's an R design D5 and my current V70 D5 SE - Having had a BMW 530D and a Mercedes S320 - The BM was a drivers car the Merc was a "magic carpet" ride - I would describe the V70 as the perfect blend of the other 2 - My description the V70 is it is an elegant drivers car and a very well kept secret. So don't tell everybody or the prices will go up. Kind regards . Clay

Late -04 V70 D5 here (facelifted already). I've clocked around 80k miles during 4 years, now standing at around 350k total. I'm the third owner, first one being a taxi driver that maintained the car meticulously, extending the normal services to include transmission oil also. At first my goal was to get to 600000km (~373000 miles), but since this old Volvo doesn't show too much signs of wanting to retire from roads, I think I should aim for a round trip to the Moon at around 480k miles :D after that, a million kilometers...?
Love to hear these stories. I am a petrolhead and drive a 911. But one of the best cars I've ever 'owned' (it was a company car) that I am most fond of was my '05 V70 D5. Just a really well engineered car that does everything very competently. I also had an 850 2.0i estate and a Mk 1 V70 2.5T. Again, both great cars that soldiered on forever. They are probably all still on the road!
Update: 410k miles today and more to come...
Had several T5’s, very quick but very thirsty. Great cars but had lots of problems with Maf sensors

I have had several Volvos in every model even a T5R. I currently own an XC60 D5 AWD AUTO and what a car this is. Your videos are great, keep up the good work.

2002 S80 here... With 500tkm and counting.. 3 years ago, when I reached 400tkm my colleagues were trolling and bought me a sticker saying '400000+++'.. Now I reached to them and requested a new one with '500000+++'.. They were a bit salty.. 🤣😆😆.. Edit: a friend of mine was asking 5 years ago if the Volvo is falling apart yet.. I felt a bit offended.. Now this summer (2020) when doing the front brakediscs, I noticed that tha factory sticker (part no) is still intact on the nicely painted heatshield plate!!! It is insane: The thing which gets all the nasty stuff from the road and goes through millions of heat cycles. I took a picture of it and sent it to him.. Sweet revenge.. 😁

Haha exactly! They were always bought by wealthy posh people trying to fly under the radar. I imagine Henley-on-Thames was full of them

@@HighPeakAutos Haha - totally true. I have some very good friends who lived on a very large country estate near Henley. Naturally they had a V70...and kept it for 13 years. But they had the diesel which they actually regretted.

I had a V70 a few years ago and looking back on it it was one of my favourite cars although I’ve had Porches and Mercs since, When I bought from the official Volvo dealers it had been the “Dealer Principal’s so it was fully loaded with gadgets and obviously in very good condition,. We took it on various European holiday trips where it never missed a beat.
What engine it have?
It does have gas struts on the boot lid. They're hidden beneath the headliner

@@AB-hx9hs they are under $20 for the pair on eBay. Also available all over the internet from many different sellers. TH-cam has video showing exactly how to replace them.
@@vwbug1975 Yes I saw the ones on ebay for $18 but I don't know if the quality is any good ? hard to tell if I buy these if I will be replacing them again in a year.?
@@AB-hx9hs I replaced the rear hatch door struts and also the hood struts this past January (2020), and they've been perfect ever since.
I’ve had my V70r a month now best car I’ve owned and yes the wheel lock is terrible 😅 but the immense power makes up for it
Christian Rönn thanks for the info dude, to be honest for what I use it for it’s not too bad just only very occasionally we go up to the lakes and some of the car parks are tiny and I just laugh at myself trying to park it

My brother owns a S60 from this generation. He uses it as a work car and he has to drive it to all sorts of construction sites. And Volvo just doesn't give up
Bought a 2002 Ocean Race edition 5 years ago. Quicker, and more sure-footed, than any other vehicle in the city when it's 20 below, snowing, and the roads are icy. (Just East of the Canadian Rockies)

Buying a new car or van is stupid. I would never buy new. I like money too much.
Totally agree, new cars are so expensive and if you want it it has to be taken on finance. I paid 1495 for my S60 it has what i want cd changer, leather, cruise, heated seats and much more, my only expense was to hide the age of the car by buying a private plate and as Matt said mines barely run in at 133600 miles
and they are built like shit.
I’m in the trade, modern cars are pretty poor, don’t waste your money on new cars by all major brands as the quality and longevity is no longer there. Best cars new are Honda, Subaru, Lexus. Forget all the rest. Buying used from over 10 years is the best bet as long as you seek genuine one owner, full service history and non abusive driving. I’ve driven every make today and the quality is not in new cars plus the amount of electronics is staggering. Personally I drive a mint 2004 V70 20T I got through the trade and after driving everyday for 16 months I’ve never been to a workshop outside of regular servicing. Sadly I can’t say that for hundreds of modern vehicles! Even the modern Volvo cars are nowhere as reliable. It’s just an expensive brand now with overpriced fancy looking junk.
