I have an RK24 and have used my dad's 84 inch bushhog finish mower many times with no issues. A finish mower doesn't require as much hp as a brush cutter. Now I wouldn't buy a 7 ft mower for it if I were buying one but wouldn't hesitate to buy a 6 ft finish mower for it

I put out a video 2yrs ago with a John Deere 1025r running a GM1072 rear finish mower. I have run it for 2yrs with no problems whatsoever so ever. Now I have a 2025r and it handles it even better. The difference between the 2 tractors with how they handle that mower is weight and height . The 1025r didn’t have filled tires so changing direction from forward to reverse was a problem until the mower wheels reorientated. My 2025r has more weight stock and it has bigger rear tires that are filled which gives me more weight advantage over the mower.
I mow several acres with each mowing trip.

They used 6 foot finish mowers on 26-29 horsepower tractors in the 50s with little problem. Depends on how well/efficient the finish mower is designed. Likely a rear discharge mower is better than a side discharge in terms of horsepower requirements. For the GM3072 it lists 25hp as the absolute minimum. You can find 6' finish mowers with as little as 16HP minimums. I would also suggest comparing the same blade style/design characteristics. If one has high lift blades and the other has low(ish) lift blades, that can make a big difference. Also if the blades are "U" shaped, it can reduce horsepower requirements (______--------------------____). I guess it also depends on how inefficient the 25HP tractor is designed (e.g. power steering, hydrostatic, electric clutches...).
I guess I should have also said something about torque. Older low-RPM motors often produced much more torque than today's engines. Today, a high RPM 25HP B&S Intek or Vanguard engine might have a 38lbft of torque whereas a 25HP engine from 1950 might have had 90lbft of torque. Torque is actually more important than HP for many of these jobs.
Great video. You can run a 72" off a 25hp, but so much depends on what you are trying to do. If you are mowing a baseball ground in dry conditions it'll be fine, but add in long, wet grass, bumps, hills it's completely the wrong machine for the job. The mower makes a huge difference as well. Dull blades, dirty deck, ungreased just saps away those HP. Soft start PTO's also help out a lot. If you are thinking of doing it make sure you trial the tractor / mower combo on where you are going to use it first!

Great video young man!! I really like looks of the summit tractor. I have a 1626 mahindra with a befco 6ft finish mower it will mow tall stuff but don't do it much usually just my 4 acres i don't let it get crazy high. The tall stuff i use the bush hog for. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun

I have a 2011 Bobcat CT445 45hp , I’ve been mowing waterways since new with a Woods RM990 , 90” 71/2 foot finish mower. It has swinging blades so it cuts 2” trees brush also . The mower was used when I got it no for sure it’s age.
Just a quick shoutout for one of my orphaned brethren. I have a 2009 Bobcat CT450 (bought in 2010), which I absolutely love. It has done all I ask, and I ask alot, with no major issues ( a few hyd leaks here and there, otherwise no problem). Anyway, just a shoutout, find me on tractorbynet, SirMaxwell.
There can be built a massive 25 horsepower diesel engine as well. Imagine a cylinder the size of a garbage can. "Low horsepower huge torque."
I have a Kioti CK2610 hydro which is 24.5 horse and a claimed 21.5 pto horse. I use a woods 6ft finish mower with no problems.
I have a kubota l2501 and i run the same 6ft woods finish mower. Flat ground and i routinely mow…tractor barely knows its there
Nice video. I'll add to your statement about temperature. Folks definitely need to watch those temps. Even if you had a 50hp tractor. When cutting that high and thick of grass, you might get a couple passes, but when you start into 10's of acres, those temps will shoot up. CUT's have a lovely hood and evacuating all that heat is a struggle. Always watch those temps. Thanks again for your vid.

@@PineyGroveHomestead - For sure. The savings from 6ft vs 5ft, will get eaten up very quickly...time and money. And definitely keep those rad's cleaned. I've had it where it looks clean, but the fins are coated with a hard thin layer from clay dust. Like baked on ceramic. Space Shuttle stuff. 😁Have to remove Rad to properly clean. So be careful out there.
Very good point. For 2 or3 weeks every spring my radiator screen will get clogged with dandelion seed every 45 min to a hour and when the gauge goes past half way I stop and brush it off with a snow brush.
@@richceglinski7543 - Yea I clean the screen constantly sometimes, gloves, brush, Rad Genie (Air and Water), leaf blower, you name it. Eventually (not that long) fine dust gets through screen, coats the rad fins. Especially this damnable clay. 😁 Learn your normal Op Temps when perfectly clean and watch for any slight anomaly. I know when I begin leaving my op temps, its time for a deeper bath.
Tip: turn your gas can sideways while you pour and you don't have to worry about the glug that and waiting on the air to pull back through the same hole.
Also I use a funnel and take the government approved nozzle off.

I have,a,72 inch land pride side discharge finish mower behind d a 23hp 324 yanmar and I just did 6 hours of too high mowing with it on
Oh man, that tractor was doing WORK!
Having a 3 range hydrostat also helps. If you run in low range it takes less HP to run the hydrostat at a given speed. I have a 25 hp compact and can mow 6-7 foot tall thistle in low range with a brush hog. However, same setup will bog down when mowing 1 foot tall June/cheat grass. The fine grass seems to take more HP.
Agree....3 ranges is a game changer to get it in a lower gear.
Think about this, Kubota has a ZD1211 with a 72" deck and the same horsepower engine as you have. You KNOW it should pull a 72" finish mower, no sweat....
Totally different use of horsepower. This mower draws down our 39hp tractor in tall grass.
My mom runs the same setup as you and it works fine but it’s slow if the grass gets a little deep. My 2038R runs a 84” with relative ease. Wouldn’t go any smaller if the terrain allows. All flat ground here on the east coast.
My L3901 will struggle with this mower in tall grass and it's 32hp at the PTO with 3 speed hydro.
@@PineyGroveHomestead I keep my grass fairly short, I can do my 14ish acres in about 6 hours. If I was regularly cutting tall grass I’d probably run a 60” on my 38R to trade speed for cut width. I guess as with so many things it’s very situational on how things work for other people. I was nervous with the 84” deck on my tractor but it runs it really well in my application.
Edit. I saw your 3901 is naturally aspirated. The turbo engine on my 38R seems to really excel in PTO applications. Cuts way better our old 44hp new Holland which was also NA
So, I wonder what the difference would be between running that 3 point finish mower VS running a 5 foot mid mount mower deck? I don't have a 3 point mower of any sort, just the 5 foot mid mount mower on my sub-compact tractor, and it does fine.....I don't think you'd have any issues with that mower if you were mowing that area frequently. Sure, it's going to struggle in the thick and tall stuff, but once you get it knocked down, and then just maintain it, you probably wouldn't have any problems.
I used to mow 2 acres mostly pasture grass with a regular old 18HP Garden tractor and a 44" mower deck without issues. But I kept up with the property and mowed it once a week....you'd have the same results I would think if you mowed that area once a week.
The temp rising was an indication the tractor was working at its max capacity. I wouldn't want to run it long term like that.
Higher clip rate of the swing back blade set up would be less strain on the right size tractor.
Does the Summit not have an adjustable top link? If so, you should be able to shorten it a little bit and pick the back end of the mower off of the ground. If not, perhaps you should check into getting a hydraulic top link if the Summit has a standard 3 point.

When mowing tall grass your tractor wheels always push the grass down on the first pass. If one is going to use a finish mower, i would think that they would mow it far more often then letting it get that high. As you can see it leaves allot of debris, and that kinda defeats the whole purpose of using a finish mower.
The suction of the finish mower lifts up the grass. When you have a lot of grass to mow like us, you are always behind!
I'm not sure it would wear the engine out, diesel's are made to grunt, that's when they build the most torque, under heavy load! You'd be more likely to damage the clutch than anything else
It was pulling the RPMs down pretty bad!
Just buy the right size implement for the tractor. You’ll do better job and not beat nothing up.

A 5 foot mower behind that tractor should be the right size....I think with my sub-compact tractor would run a 5 foot finish mower, but if I recall they usually say around a 4 foot implement....although the tiller is a 50", the mid mount mower is a 5 foot mower, so I'd think a 5 foot rear finish mower would be the same size recommendation....
I know nothing except the work I need to get done. So please pardon my questions: 1.) In general terms, does a Finish Mower require more horse power than a Brush Hog? (Comparing a 6 foot to 6 foot, 5 foot to 5 foot, ....) I need to brush hog about 5 acres and I have a 25HP Tractor and am in the market for my first Brush Hog and trying to purchase a quality BH, but not too big of a BH.
The biggest factor is what are you brush hogging. If it's light brush hogging mainly shorter grass and the occasional small brush, then a 5' will work. Your PTO hp will play a big role because this tractor only has 18 PTO hp due to the hydrostatic transmission. If you have a manual transmission and get closer to 25 PTO hp, you can run a 5' better. Another thing is width of your tractor rear tires, if you get a brush hog wider than your tires, you might hit trees and fence posts. I run a 5' on my 38hp tractor and in tall grass and thick brush, it will bog it down some. This video may have some useful information for you: th-cam.com/video/WSC7T6DOTcs/w-d-xo.html

Lol I've been cutting a couple of acres of hill side terrraces often 4ft high plus grass and bracken with a 1994 mtd 36 inch deck for ten years ..... I can only dream what ot would be like to such an awesome peice of kit😂.

The comment was more to point out how phenomenal a cheap ( actually free I just had to fix it) lawn tractor is. I can maintain it myself with basic tools when something breaks a welder seems to have got me out of trouble and she has operated way way way way beyond design spec for a decade. At an undecided future date an actual tractor of some description is going to be required 25hp sounds glorious 😂👍.I really enjoyed the video.
Funny story; Here a couple years ago I went to our local Ace store and I asked the girl there where their fuel jugs where. I quickly grabbed a yellow 6 gal jug and told her that this would work for a water jug and she immediately told me that it was for Diesel only lol

i liked the video and agree with everything you said but I think it was an incomplete test. You pitted the small tractor and the big mower against the worst possible condition. What if you were to regularly cut the grass when it was at the height of the first few rows that you cut with the summit mower. Would it be a viable tool for that job and save some time due to the larger size?
I kinda talked about that at the end, but no, that 6' mower is just too much for it. It stalled the tractor engaging the PTO the first time. Even in "normal" grass it would struggle.
I have 2 videos on my channel cutting grass about as high, with a Frontier GM1072 and it cuts just fine. The first video is with a 1025r, the second video is with my 2025r. No issues at all😉

Yes.
I run a 6' finish mower on my 19hp and have for years. I do not mow heavy or tall grass - that's done with a 4' bush hog. Go slow, do not mow heavy/tall grass and you'll be okay.

Top link is as short as it will go and it's a very short top link.
mow slower and/or more often and you don't load the large cutter/mower as much...
Same idea as when I backed through a grove of 1 to 2 inch trees to shred them while clearing the land when I first bought it. I just went slow.

Getting the hydraulic top link lets you lift that Deer mower's rear wheels.
I strongly recommend getting the rear hydraulic ports on your tractor. More hydraulic ports means more options for making the tractor do work for you instead of working to adjust the tractor.

Grass i mow is thick and belt level, waist high. Was using a 6 foot on 40hp.... it struggled, now I'm using 6 foot mower with 50 hp tractor. Way better.

I have a 6 ft king kutter brush mower. I use it on a 25 pto hp kubota tractor. I have mowed waist high brush and grass, even mowed down trees with trunks an inch to 1.5 inch. Been using this rig for years. Have no problem with the tractor handling the mower.
I use a Woods BW12 on a 50hp Kubota. I can cut yard close and smooth in H2 at 2500rpms. Better hang on because some grass is about to get annihilated fast like. Yeah I started out with a 6’ RM660. Thank goodness I found a better way.

I'm in a different class, but just sharing.
I run a 84"/7' finish mower on my JD 4720 and it doesn't even know it's back there..
But I'm also 58 Hp
I think my tiller is 72" /6' and it's not even making it work either.
Most times I'm 1200-1500 rpm and plenty of power,. rarely hit 2000 rpm.
Now the difference is I bought a cream puff 06 tractor with 800 hrs on it but I did give premium price.
At the end of the day I am more than happy, and my neighbors with smaller tractors just say wow when they get on it or need me to come baile them out.
None of this was meant as bragging,. just stating the difference in buying small or moving up a few sizes.
I also bought this unit because it has 0 emissions that you mentioned.
Its engine is the John Deere 4024T power plant.. Turbo Charged.

And my point was.... buying the smallest and over maxing out vrs moving up a few notches and not struggling for power... At All.
Most times in ANYTHING you won't regret more Power.
Don't sell yourself short staying in 25 HP class just for emissions, Buy older and bigger, if it fits your needs.
Don't get me wrong, 25 is more than enough for many and it has it's place.
I'm not slamming anything just sharing the difference between underpowered vrs plenty or borderline of overpowered.
Tractors in most cases are power-horses... Over-implementing takes the powerhouse factor away and you have to baby things along and most times it will end in a failure or taking 1/2 to 3 times as long to do what should be a simple task.
And a larger heavier implement make getting stuck or hung up a worse situation, like around a pond or creek. OR..
A properly sized IMP. might Not get you stuck at all, or keep you from getting in that situation.
Short answer is over-implementing is abusing what should be a prized piece of equipment.
I can't tell you how many friends admit, I wish I had bought "Bigger" next size up or 2 sizes, "I thought I could get by with..." (Nope)
Now I can't get my money back or will take a beating selling.

And yet you blabbed through the second part so we could hear the tractor ourselves and didn't even record the tractor stalling. Maybe you should do this test again with regular blades on the second mower because most will only have the regular blades. So it's not a completely fair test. It's like comparing apples to oranges. That heavier setup could be the reason for the stalling and might be just fine with the regular blades.

Underwhelming! It’s amazing disheartening how under powered these subcompact tractors when compared to a zero turned mower that don’t really weigh that much less. I have a commercial zt mower with a 64” deck and a 24hp Kawasaki that weighs 1400 wet and I can roll through some thick wet grass
Great point but a tractor can do many other things than mow.
