#23 Mid Mount Mower VS 3 Point Finish Mower - Kubota B2601 and Land Pride FDR 1660

  • In this video, I'll show you why I chose the Land Pride FDR1660 rear mount grooming mower over the mid-mount belly mower for my Kubota B2601 compact tractor.
    One type of mower is not better than the other, so you'll need to decide which is best for you and your situation. I'll list a number of pros and cons that I have found with my rear mount finishing mower. This is not a review or a how to video, just some information from my experience that I hope you find helpful.
    Do you prefer a finish mower, a flail mower, or a rotary (bush hog / brush hog) mower? Personally, there are times when I could use each. Search mcg mmm.
    This video may be helpful for BX owners, B2301 owners, or even Kubota LX owners.

    Fifteen years ago I bought a Kubota RCB 60 mid mount mower. It really impressed me with it's heavy duty build quality, shaft drive and smooth and quite operation. But I absolutely dread putting it on or off the B2150! I'm fifteen years older now and it isn't getting any easier to man handle that 500 lbs. beast. I find I leave it hanging in the tractor shed more and more often and mow with my 35 year old Simplicity.

      I hitch a chain to the front of my B7510 and pick it up enough to clear the deck with my garage car hoist. I learned to be scrupulously careful with how I thread the chain through the two rear hoist pin holes, as a single slipped link can turn a chain into a liquid, vibrating stream until the wheels reach the floor, but still, the system has worked well for me since 2010.

    I have owned both and still own a rear finish mower. I had a B2920 with a mid- mount and it was no real problem hooking and unhooking but the finish mower is easier and faster. I use my Land Pride quick hitch on my FDR-2572 with G6 Gator blades and it can't be beat. It is rear discharge so the grass is dispensed evenly behind it instead of a windrow, for the most part it works great. I picked it up used for $1000 so right there is the REAL difference, the 72" Kubota belly mower was $3500! For that kind of difference I can make the rear finish work for me. Like he said it's really not for weeds, it's one of those mowers that really, really make the G6 Gator blade look good and I've tried them all.

    I watched a review of a 3pt finish mower on Tractor Time With Tim so this is another good viewpoint to have. The one thing I know he uses instead of the loader for front ballast is a set of suitcase weights. I'd probably go with a mid-mount mower since that's what I've grown up with most of my life. Plus, we've got a lot of hills and trees to deal with in our area.

  • @rodcros

    That's a nice tractor/mower combination. My first tractor was a Bolens G174 gear driven with a 48" Woods mower on the 3 pt hitch. Once I rebuilt the pulleys (rust) it did a great job of moderately rough cutting, but on a sharply undulating lawn I had big trouble with the geometry of those undulations. I had to repeat a lot of uncut spaces from the side. More modern rear mowers seem to be set further from the tractor with a lot more freedom to follow the terrain. When I bought my Kubota B7510 hydro with its mid-mount mower, the ease and quality of the lawn cut improved considerably. The rig was capable of mowing around my 25 acres of little trees, but the flow of cut grass created a problem the longsuffering Woods did not have.

    I have a new Yanmar 325 with a mid-mount mower (60”) after mowing with my old B7100hst with a 48” finish mower for the past 30 years. In my yard, I need to trim less with the mid-mount. I am mowing 40% + grade in areas. I have spent many hours looking for the spacers and lynchpins over the years. I’ll miss the rear mount mower in some conditions. Trimming to the edge is far less an issue with the mid-mount. By next year I will have a stronger opinion. Thanks for the nice videos!

    I have a solution for your height pin the gets pulled off by weeds, buy some small nylon wire ties and put it under the ring and over the pin. Zip it tight and your problem is solved. The ring can’t be pulled up off the pin because the zip tie holds it down. If you want it even more secure you can use two zip ties/pin and crisscross them.

    Great video showcasing the RFM. I just purchased a LX2610 with a mid mount mower for my 3.5 acres. Our yard is reasonably flat and it will probably only go on and off at the beginning and end of cutting season. I strongly considered a RFM but like you mentioned it makes the machine long even with the bucket off and it would be more cumbersome for my wife to use. I may be mowing another 3-4 acres in a year or two and might be second guessing my decision.
    For your rear wheel pins. Try a couple zip ties through them to keep them closed

    Great video! I tuned in because this rfm is at the top of my list and I have several LP dealers near me. Just wanted to add some helpful thoughts maybe. I have a property that has some hillside. I personally graded the whole place before I seeded my 3.5 acres of yard. I have a 30hp New Holland and initially 72" belly mower underneath. Anywhere that wasn't dead flat either got scalped or got the tractor stuck because of the lack of height and lack of articulation compared to a riding mower. I sold the belly mower for a small loss and bought a Cub Cadet riding mower with 60" deck that has a terrible deck design leaving lots of grass uncut unless completely dry. I have a 5ft Titan Implement brush hog that does what its supposed to do but is always unsightly for anything considered yard and not rough pasture. You have a great looking place and I don't think you would be happy with the cut of a brush hog within sight of your house. I would humbly suggest buying a good condition used small riding mower and making 1 pass around your house, trees, and fence line then finishing up with the rfm.

    I have probably 225-250 hours with a mid mount mower on a b2630 which is an older version of your machine. With a 60 inch deck it leaves a great finish. Comparable to any non pro level zero turn. So a mid range exmart and up and lower end gravely and up and others that are similar. I dont think the deck is too hard to do but i wouldnt want fo take it on and off for every cut. Pulling it off for a specific job really isnt too bad and honestly if you have a light winter of snow you can really just leave it on. Its amazing where it will go with the belly mower on.
    I dont use any rear attachments as of now. Besides a trailer hitch to move trailers. Thats going to change here shortly. Im going a different direction with tractors because of moving to a zero turn for my mowing which i honestly wish i would have done from the start but you live and learn. I dont regret the 15 years of mowing my place with the b2630. It did a great job, the gravely just does a cut better. Pun intended.
    Its far more annoying to put a backhoe on and off. I hate doing it. I see your point very clearly on the rear mount being able to back under trees and brush as well as using the swing to your advantage.
    My change is going to be toward a lx2610su with r14’s for its higher ground clearance and larger tires and no mid pto and to a 60 inch flail with hammers and a hydraulic top link to use with the flail and a box blade and land plane. And a 3rd funtion, quick detach and 2 rear remotes.
    Going from a mowing as a primary function to land care as a primary function.

    Nice job Ed! I went with the MMM on my B2601. Before I got my “B” series, I had a BX 2680 with a pin on bucket. I find the B 2601 without the bucket (like you show) is just as maneuverable as my old BX. Also it is hard for me to be turned around in the seat. I am just not as flexible as I once was. Seeing how you use it... And the finish you put too it... I would say a flail mower would suit you better than a rotary cutter. Better cut finish but you still have the ablity to chew up brush if you want.
    Also if you don't adjust cut height often you can swap out the pins for a bolt to avoid them falling out.

      @@MyClutteredGarage No argument on price. I will say have used flails and rotarys a lot and they are worth the extra $1000+ over a rotary in the right application. If you want to smash stuff down nothing tops a rotary but a flail mower does a much nicer finished job.

    I have both an exmark zero turn and a rear mount 72” finish mower on a Kioti tractor.
    The zero turn is faster because of maneuverability.
    I have slopes and ditches that I can not do with the zero turn. Zero turns have very poor traction.
    I am guilty of using the finish mower more like a brush hog at times.
    I have had it since 2007. I just replaced the belts for the first time. I am on the second set of blades and just replaced one bent wheel caster. So for all the years of hard service it is holding up well.
    So I am keeping them both. I have some overlap in capability, which is good if one is down for service. They both also have their specialty.

    Hi Ed! I have a Deere 1025R with a 60” mid mount mower and a 48” brush hog. There’s trade offs on both. I use the brush hog for parts of my property that are ‘wilder’, lots of rocks and branches that will take out a finish mower. I was cringing when you were backing under those trees!

    • @MyClutteredGarage
      @MyClutteredGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so very much. That sounds like a great setup. Ultimately, I'd like to keep the finish mower and add a brush hog. I think I'd really like a flail mower, but they are not as common (used) and are pricey. -Ed

    Thanks so much for another great video!
    I believe you would be disappointed with the cut of the grass with the rotary cutter/brush hog for your manicured lawn area. I vote :) for you purchasing a rotary cutter/brush hog for the rough areas of your property if needed and keeping your finish mower. I have owned and used a rotary cutter/brush hog for a year, really like it, and am keeping it. Now purchasing/adding a finish mower for a more manicured look for closer to the house.

    I can't count how many videos I have seen comparing these two types of mowers. You are the first one who explained all these uses that are unique to a tow behind. I have been struggling as a new buyer, but you have sold me on a tow behind and i can just use my push mower for the few areas around the house that will be a pain to maneuver with it.

    • @MyClutteredGarage
      @MyClutteredGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curt Chadwick - sounds silly but it took me over 25 years to get a tractor and loader - and this setup. I suppose I’ll use the bucket for snow if needed, but my neighbor has a truck with a plow so there’s that too. I haven’t had to worry about much snow here in southern NJ the past several years (jinx). I bet CT is beautiful this time of year. Thanks for watching! -Ed

      That should be all you need. I could probably get away with the same. Every now and then we get dumped on and its those times a blower would be nice. Last year my buddy started a plow service...it snowed once. I thank him every time I see him!

    If you put the lower link brackets of the mower in "float position," it will follow the contour of the terrain.

    • @fhuber7507
      @fhuber7507 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some of what he did, that would be better, But especially for the berm shooting backstop, he definitely needed to use the hydraulic lift.
      I think he's using the lift vs float as needed based on his experience with his land.
      Note: It will float up from any lift position. The 3 point does not push down.
