Hiro Sanada always stands out in every frame. Great actor, beautiful face
Proof that audiences will give a movie a lot of leeway for historical inaccuracies as long as the writing and direction are good.
No actually it is based on history for good part the foreigner becoming a samurai has happend a couple of times with a frenchman and a zulu even both became respected warriors amongst there men..

It is based on the historical Satsuma rebellion, but there are major inaccuracies. The Samurai never abandoned the use of guns or modern technology. This is likely based on the final battle where the Samurai ran out of ammunition and decided to make a suicide charge. The Samurai had been using Portuguese Arquebuses since the Sengoku Period. Also, the armor that the Samurai are wearing are from the Sengoku period (1400s -1600s) whereas this conflict takes place in the 1800s.@@skillsphere9245
Yeah, historically awful, but great story telling and well done. The Shogun were doomed to lose anyway due to the more modern Japanese military, Great scenes with amazing acting, The Shogun were so arrogant and unwilling to adapt the changing times. In so many ways this the revers of the Cruise Character now fighting for a lost cause after surviving the Civil war being an Union soldier.
When one faction reached the imperial age and the other one is still in the feudal age.
with Japanese coming to aoe4 we will see this in games to come for sure.

Edward Wick the director wanted to emphasized in this movie the death of samurai was because of the japanese industrialization as they began to fully adapt western ideals leaving out the old way. So it was necessary to change the story of the samurai not using any guns here

@@benedictodunsky2790 It's also worth noting that charges were reasonable at the time and both sides still used a mix of traditional sidearms, bayonets, and the occasional specialized traditional weapon during combat, just like European forces. Stylized wood prints show Samurai and imperial officers dueling with swords during breaches in sieges, not so dissimilar to the contemporary European dueling mythos. There were also a few guerilla actions that were made using traditional weapons because guns are loud and silencers weren't invented for another couple decades at the earliest.
If anything one of the most significant images of the war is Kumamoto Castle proving to be *effective* against early modern breach tactics despite being built almost 300 years prior, and withstanding attack from multiple sides...While held by Imperial peasant conscripts. This was actually the first battle, and turning point, of the war-the castle withstood attack and the rebels never regained the initiative. It's like if the movie started with the Samurai attacking the conscripts, getting repelled by a rag-tag bunch of peasants, and then getting progressively pushed into worse and worse defensive positions as their logistic base collapsed behind them.
In reality the Satsuma rebels were defeated by logistics, the unexpected bravery of the conscripts and volunteers of the Japanese army, and the illegitimacy of their rebellion in the eyes of the populace. It had nothing to do with them using traditional weapons, nor was their rebellion some heroic struggle against the future-it was the ruling class being supplanted and throwing a temper tantrum. Of course the government they were rebelling against devolved into fascism, but that's another story.
Facts can often ruin the drama...this is a movie.

God, Watanabe is fantastic in this movie. When Uijo charges in and kills like 10 men, goosebumps.
Ken Watanabe was exceptional in this, as well as in Clint Eastwood's companion piece of Flag's Of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima.
One of the exectutives from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in Nagasaki, was Kensuke Watanabe, when the battleship Musashi was being built, this is in Akira Yoshimura's book,, 'Build The Musashi'. I don't believe there is any relation though.
Cannot forget Tom Cruise, he was great in many features.

@@blackpowderkun bayonet is 「銃剣」 "juuken" in japanese, but in this case 「着剣」 "chakken" is more shorter than 「銃剣を着る」 "juuken wo kiru". so in military shorter sentence is more preferred.

The Samurai armor is so beautiful just like the sword it is art. In my opinion the Samurai armor is one of the most beautiful armor pieces that have ever existed.

right, and the satsuma rebelion happend in 1877, by that time nobody used swords and arrows, this is nonsense.
@TheFalseDragon Not really. Satsuma rebellion ran out of ammunition during actions. That's why they had to give up using the guns and cannons.

Sadly, this movie took place after the Boshin war. The Samurai from both sides have access and used guns by that time. Satsuma's forces know and used guns but they have don't have access to ammunition which lead them to have a final banzai like charge after running out of bullets.
Yeah, thankfully the Boshin war DLC for Fire & Maneuver accurately portrayed the Tokugawa shogunate using guns too

a hidden cavalry charge from the back where the commanders where, after the rest of the troops moved forward would be a decisive win, or at least shake the morale of the enemy.

When you're the only player who hasnt left the Renaissance Era yet in Civ V:
The movie took inspiration from the Satsuma Rebellion where those alligned with the Emperor/a modernized Japan and those alligned with the Shogun/traditional Japan clashed, but the Samurai under Saigo Takamori were not fighting for "the soul" of Japan or anything noble like that. They were fighting for the privileges of their dying caste, which was becoming obsolete with the rise of a professional army. And they used guns, which the Samurai had been happily using during the Sengoku Jidai as well to great effect. The whole romanticism came when Takamori and his followers were dead and Japan under Emperor Meiji needed something to put up as a moral standard to look up to. So they took the bygone Samurai warrior ethos, mixed it with nationalism and represented him as an honorable warrior who fought and died for his country without a second thought.
The movie on its own is amazing to watch, but it smoothes history over to the point where "inspired by true events" would be pushing it.

@@hellshing4866 during the japanese invasion of korea in 1588 a large portion (maybe half or more) were using matchlocks which were more advanced than european guns at the time. japanese teppo had sights on them and other innovaions

Toranaga in an alternate timeline 200 years later
As someone who got into history because of a old ps2 game called Kessen set around the battle of Sekigahara in1600. it did always make me wonder why Katsumoto didn't have guns centuries later. Because one of the main things in that game was using matchlocks and cannons. But honestly as long as a movie is good and gets some things right I realize it's still just a movie and for me this is still an awesome movie even if it doesn't really tell the history of the Satsuma Rebellion.

@@aronmarkovits5396 It's a strategy game. It focuses on the real history then does some historical fiction like you can win as the Toyotomi and do s fictional set of battles for example. But it's an older style strategy game but I still enjoy it to this day myself.

I believe that even in real history during their civil war. There was a lack of gun.
Eitherway, history or fiction. Japan during their isolation period didnt really develop nor produce much firearm unlike their 17th century army.
Guns may be seen as dishonorable, but guns bring victory, and Victory brings honor.

Same actor, yes. Ironically, Hiroyuki Sanada's character in this movie, Ujio, would have been a samurai who, like Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe's character), supported the emperor in overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate, only to rebel when the emperor sidelines the samurai class as a whole.
Two decades later, and he's playing the character based on the Shogunate's founder.

i get what this movie was trying to do but it would also be cool to see a more objective and less romantisized version of this period
Now to play Total War 2 Fall of the Samurai and have Imperial Infantry shooting at Yari Ashigaru.
And Tom cruise's character compared it to Spartans at Thermopylae. If that were the case the samurais should've find a way to funnel the larger force with their smaller army

Not sure I understand the reasoning behind charging the guys with mainly melee weapons when you've got artillery and entire formations armed with bolt action rifles. I get the character is meant to be arrogant, but still
The theme was that they were going to be taking over the village and had way too much firepower anyway. So they kept 'chivalry' / 'bushido'.
In reality they did run out of munitions eventually and fought by hand. So the movie just shortened the order of events. I think it was powerful for this.

@@Zippsterman Absolutely. And I imagine it was easy to cut them off from gaining more supplies. The modernists only had to wait it out and maybe send some attack parties before any bigger battles (represented by the Ninja in the movie I guess).
It's fascinating. The movie works but allows for a lot more study.
This movie is set before WW1, and they were doing infantry charges with bayonets even then. So I wouldn't consider it entirely unreasonable for the commander to send in the infantry to secure the next forward position given that the artillery needed to be moved forward to the next hill crest before it could be brought to bear again given the hilly terrain.
Also a bolt action rifle with the long bayonet of the time period would be better in melee for the average soldier than a soldier with a sword which has less reach. The biggest advantage the Samurai had in the melee depicted was their solid armor while the rifleman only had basic jackets.
@@LeethLee1 So apparently there were cases like that where one side charged with melee weapons against a firing line, but it was because their gunpowder got wet and wouldn't fire whereas the other side had upgraded to metallic cartridges and still worked after the rain. Samurai loved guns, the way they show it in this movie is just silly since they'd already been shooting each other for a long time
When you first start out learning Japanese history, this movie is awesome. But the more you read the more you wish the movie could have been different.
The sad truth is how fictionalised this is because it's such a passionate film that shows the power of the Japanese mentality, in reality the samurai were the more the corrupt and arrogant tyrants

The samurai equipment that appears in this movie is from the 12th to 14th century samurai equipment. Samurai in the 19th century had a large number of guns and cannons. No samurai existed in the 19th century with such old equipment. There is a sense of discomfort.
The biggest inaccuracy that doesn't make and sense is the fact that samurai are not also using firearms. The samurai have been using rifles and muskets for a long time by this point, it doesn't make sense to have them just use swords and bows.

Defitinely, especially after one volley of fucking fire you send your ranged unit stacks to their deaths against melee units, unless im missing something here, a stupid move.
@@chrissheppo The riflemen in the movie had nothing to shoot at as the Samurai were in a trench. And even in a melee the bayonet infantry are still a massive threat, which the movie showed with how few Samurai survived even after they had fought wile maximizing the advantages of terrain, timing, and chaos.
Even in Shogun 2 total war, the imperial rifle infantry can hold their own against yari kachi and sword kachi up to a point.

History of Boshin War
The outcome of the Boshin War was determined by foreign powers.
The former shogunate army had the cooperation of France, and the new government army had the cooperation of Britain.
The former shogunate army was supposed to purchase ironclad ships from the United States, but due to the external neutrality advocated by the British, they were no longer able to purchase ironclad ships, and as a result, the new government army had an advantage.
The only movie with Tom Cruse in it I have enjoyed enough to watch more than once.

The only thing about this sequence that really bothers me is the choice to bayonet charge when they could just keep firing volleys into a defenseless enemy

@@chrissheppo certainly, one artillery barrage and a voley is all it takes.
the entire sequence is fictional anyways and this didn't happen. However, the bayonet charge could be justified since the imperials were still mostly using rifles that are muzzle loaded and they didn't have time to reload. Also, humans aren't robots who will just maintain calm as they see people rushing to kill them so I'd imagine the Imperial officer ordered a counter charge since standing still will only make his men more fearful and possibly run away, charging completely turns that fear into rage.
Before there was a Capt Nathan Algren, in feudal Japan there was the Samurai Yasuke. Yasuke, born in Mozambique, was a former slave who gained employment as a bodyguard to an Italian jesuit missionary. They traveled to Japan in 1579 where Yasuke lietrally beame a celebraty with his social charm and stature. Eventually Yasuke gained employment as a sword bearer for the Daimyo.
I believe Yasuke story will make an awesome movie.

I never liked to watch it since the mighty samurai warrior came to an end. They actually used 1500s muskets against 1800s weapons.
Why do the cannon shots look like they hit perfectly vertically? Dirt, maybe shrapnel or even the shell itself would still bounce towards the direction of the trajectory, no? I’ve seen this weird error in so many movies

The age of the musket is by far the most based age of warfare.
We really sat across from eachother in a field and maneuvered almost like a chess game.
After a villey and the lengthy reloads l, it amounted to taking turns shooting eachother until a formation is decimated enough to have a charge into melee.

The tactic continued into bolt-action rifles. I know this movie isn't 'historically accurate' but yeah early bolt-actions were used in conjunction with antiquated lines of battle like in this clip. All the way up to world war 1.(the imperial army in this clip is using bolt-action rifles)
American Civil War battles were even funnier because the guns were already accurate enough to be pretty darn deadly but the tactics were still the same.

The technical rise and tactical understanding that Japan went in a little less than 100 years to beat other advance nations around it is really quite remarkable. It went to be a superpower in less than 150 years..which no other country besides the US can boost about.

That's not inaccurate line infantry tactics were being heavily relied upon by western armies into the early 1870s. It wasn't until the conflicts during German unification where simarly equipped foes soon learned that line infantry tactics were no good against an opponent armed with breech loading rifles.
Western military advisors had a tendancy not to teach their clients everything they knew as they wouldn't want to accidentally create an army that could fight their own one on equal terms.
Well at least the Imperial forces are using proper line infantry supported by armstrong guns(?). Much better than the first attempt using levy infantry against kachi infantry and horsemen in the forest fogged at that.
