You’re a vey savvy person for 26 years old. Not many people your age would breakdown their cost of living expenses like you do. Plus you’ve got enough views to make money from TH-cam. I’m very impressed!
My maintenance fee was also about $350 a month. Then it shot up to $800 a month because they had to replace all the rotting rusted out pipes including a huge sewer line pipe. The place was built in 1970. So if you buy an apartment, in an old building, see if they already fixed the pipes or you'll be in for a big surprise.
My husband and I live on Hawaii Island. We have a good life here and take advantage of all the free entertainment like beaches and hiking, but I know how difficult it is for young families. I've worked with so many people who have to have a minimum of two jobs to support their children.

Great information. Yes, food is expensive whether it’s takeout or groceries. Love garlic chicken and chicken katsu. Rent/mortgage is high compared to the mainland.
We lived on Oahu for more than 20 years but moved away because we had reached the tipping point on traffic congestion, very high prices on groceries, high utilities prices, taxation on every purchase and the state and city governments' incompetent and wasteful use of tax revenue. The people of Hawaii are lovely and kind people, but they deserve much better from their state and local government leaders and officials. The upside of moving away from Hawaii was we were able to sell our nearly paid for home for way more than the original purchase price and were then able to pay cash for a much larger home in Nevada. Hawaii is a lovely place to visit, but it is very tough to live there if you are not a multimillionaire or do not have lots of family members there who will feed you and let you live with them for free.

The food is about the same price as the mainland....depending where you shop. I've seen food more expensive here in Pennsylvania. Gas in my city is $3.15 per gallon, my car insurance is $471, my rent is $1200 a month for a one-bedroom.
I spend about 200 dollars to work and that's just a 30 min drive and back. The cost of grocery and food is more expensive where I live as well but I guess rent and mortgage is slightly cheaper compared to Hawaii. Thanks for sharing your work experience and lifestyle. I live in Canada right now but might consider moving here in the future.
Very Organized information compared to most people from Hawaii trying to provide this type of lifestyle info. As a Local Asian in Hawaii as well, I agree with everything here! We basically are living Middle Class, and Comfortable lifestyle with very healthy food, so our expenses just for food and housing are already over $4,000 per month.
This was a Reminder on Why I try to cut my living expenses as much as possible. The idea of spending $300 a month on restaurant food is inconceivable. That is my Costco Monthly Food Budget lol. You must be doing well for yourself as the cost of living is rather high in Hawaii especially on anything that isn't a Native resource to the islands. My Great Aunt and her Family Lived in the Honolulu Ghetto by the University of Hawaii for years. She thrived well on snagging as much free soy sauce packets, Ketchup, etc she could nab from Tourist Hungry Restaurants. She'd order the cheapest thing in an tourist trap just to maximize off the free commodities that she otherwise likely could not afford. Most places like here a restraunt will tell you off, but I imagine they were so busy and had so much busy they could care less if a 50+ yr old woman was pocketing tiny soy sauce packets. 😅🤣 She Taught me a lot while is back Home in Honolulu About Living Frugal before I went back here to the mainland. Cheers Mate, Hope to move back to The Islands in the future.
Honestly that's comparable to living in a Chicago suburb. The only major difference would be housing. Our condo here would be about 2x's more expensive in Hawaii ( square footage/ amenities/etc). Dreaming of Hawaii 🥰
Wait till you arrive you haven't seen the things that he hasn't covered or is hiding the real cost of living in Hawaii especially considering how much smaller it is compared to the mainland.
Brah what you mean live in Hawaii. We survive there. You need to be real with these people and tell it how it really is. Seems like you have a good life there. Most of us didn't or don't. Not hating on your channel or you but most people struggle in Hawaii for what little these establishments pay. Thats why my wife and I moved. Alohas
Nah bro, completely understand what you’re saying; I am super blessed to be in my position here but not necessarily the norm. Appreciate you keeping it real 🤙
@@melj7075 just like everywhere else just be humble and show respect. Dont look down on people there. A lot of people are really nice and cool. There are bad apples there. You have to respect the culture there. Take your shoes or flip flops off b4 you go in anyone's house. Dont be afraid of food that the people offer you. As for jobs. Well it all depends what your career is. If you are in the food industry well your not going to starve.lol but life might be a little challenging rwnt is very high depends where you live and if you have roommates. Bus system is pretty good. You can go around the island for like 5 bucks or so. If you are planning on moving there good luck. Paradise is not always what you think it is. Buy a moped it's cheaper if it's just you no need insurance and gas is pretty high at times. You have a melting pot of cultures there so it will be interesting to you. What else you wanna know.
Thanks, actual numbers! After reading so many comments on [social media site] complaining about cost of living but not sharing numbers, your video was a breath of fresh air :)
It's been my dream to reside in Hawaii ever since high school. I was planning to go until we had a financial set back due to the pandemic. It's a shame that costs are regulated by location. Does greed come to mind? I think so. Much mahalo for the video. I'm happy for you and others who can live and survive in Hawaii. I guess, for me, it will remain a dream.
How did the pandemic make u broker? Unemployment boost was fantastic and stimulus checks. Free food stamps, hiring bonuses. Before the pandemic I had 50 dollars in my savings. Today I have over 140k thanks to the pandemic and learning crypto and stocks that was invested from stimulus checks lol
I used to play a lot of golf before the pandemic started but wearing a mask and practicing was just a little too overwhelming so I haven’t practiced in a while.
Excellent video. I live in Las Vegas. It's getting expensive here as well. Saw you were eating at L&L. I had them last night for dinner. Chicken katsu as well. I'll be coming to Honolulu for 2 weeks in December. Maybe I'll see you at L&L one day. By the way, I just subscribed. Thanks.
As he said, most of his meals are free from parents or girl friend's parents. In the tropics buildings require a lot more upkeep so consider that too. He didn't include toiletries, clothing, or shoes.
so is it possible to come from Denmark (Europa) and live and work in Hawaii? (USA) really want to. not only because of the looks but also because of the aloha spirit.
Been living in California for a few years and honestly we pay as much or more on most things, gas is at 3.50, groceries are pricy and my car registration was almost $300 on a 8 year old car. Our last apartment at 650sq ft was around $2200 not including anything. Although we do live in the Bay Area, Hawaii doesn’t sound so bad!
Loved the video! I dream of living there but content myself with visiting my timeshare every year. It is beautiful and such a treat for this Washingtonion who lives on the snowy side.
Oh wow! I went to school at UW haha not quite snowy, but was outside for the two hailstorms there were when I was in school lol. Thank you so much for commenting!
Wait. DId he factor in daily malasadas runs? That's were a lot of my money would go. Plus I'd be getting plate lunch like every day. My health costs would be super high because I'd also be 400 pounds. I can't afford to live in Hawaii.
Hawaii looks like a beautiful place. I was suppose to go there for a week in August for a convention, but it was canceled because of the pandemic. This was a great video with some great humor😂😂😂.
I live on Maui. My rent and electric combined for 1 year is roughly $24,000. Not sure how electric on Oahu is so cheap, but here on Maui electric is sky high, my bill averages between $375-$400 a month! Maui Electric Company charges 4x the rate per kilowatt hour vs. the mainland, they have no competition, they are a monopoly and they take full advantage of exorbitant price gouging. With rent and electric combined, plus the costs of food, fuel, and basic household items annually the cost is right around $50,000 per year on the low end. Then there is vehicle registration, that little sticker on your license plate will cost you a small fortune as registration fees are calculated by the weight of your vehicle, i have a full size truck and my registration for it is $392 per year, my car registration is $280 per year. There are pros and cons to island living, as with anywhere. I dont recommend anyone to assume that they can move here and be happy. More often than not you will have to work so much that you have very little time to enjoy the place you live in. Renting is not easy, between having $5-$6k for 1st and last months rent, as well as a security deposit for electric. Also, there are a great majority of landlords that want to control your lifestyle once you rent from them, they will tell you how many people you can have visiting, the landlords come on property and enter residences frequently without prior notification, and alot of them will enter your home while you are not there. My biggest shock upon moving here was to see how very little business', properties etc.. are not owned bg local Hawaiians. The island is mostly owned by Filipinos, Japanese, and Canadians. Also, there is a HUGE problem with homeless people everywhere, and so many tweekers that are on Crystal Meth. There is ALOT of theft on Maui. The police generally have no interest in dealing with these people, therefore the problem is way out of control. This is the last of the Wild West for law enforcement, there is no one watching them or holding them accountable for anything, the corruption stems from the mayor on down the line. Most mainlanders come to Maui and don't make it but 6 months to a year before returning back to the mainland. One should thoroughly research everything before thinking about moving to Hawaii.
Living in both Honolulu and DMV ( burbs of DC) costs are kinda close on some items....except gas. Gas here ranges from $2.35-$3.35. Regional price fixing based off income taxes of residents that vary county by county. Example Potomac vs Beltsville or Hawaii Loa Ridge vs Ewa Beach.
I work in construction rn - I am working on moving to Oahu in the next 6-7 months… since you work in the construction industry as well, maybe your videos will really help!
Just discovered your channel today! Your great! Loved all the jokes. I moved here in December 2019, and will never leave. I love it. It's expensive, yeah, but worth it. Love the people, the culture, the food. I can't see living anywhere else.
Agreed, I'm in Sonoma County which isn't as expensive as SF, but it's about $1500 for a one-bedroom, $2300ish for a two bedroom. (Or lots more, depending)
Great video! Pipeline dreams still just holding out in this time. I’m not 26 but i’m hoping I can trade the UK In one day! 🙏 I’m sitting in London and hoping to complete legal studies. I wished I had just been positive back some time ago, I always loved everything I saw about Hawaii. Thanks for the breakdown!
I lived in Hawaii in the early 1980s. When I moved from Denver I was shocked at the rents! In Denver I had a small penthouse unit and paid $325/month. I found a lower unit at 1350 Ala Moana and it was $800/month! I imagine it is $3k or more now?
It seems like you got it pretty well living on O’ahu, you only gotta pay $27 for registration! Lol Jokes aside, I was born and raised on O’ahu. I just started living on my own away from family (still on island tho) and let me tell you, if my husband wasn’t in the military, we’d be struggling to get by. I’ve been a local resident all my life and boy was it hard. I am grateful to be where I am financially but there are many people on island who have to spend way more than you a month to get by. I remember working 3 jobs just to help my family with our mortgage payments and I still didn’t have enough to pay for other bills and loans. It’s tough but that’s the price you gotta pay to live in paradise. 😅🤷🏻♀️
Way cheaper than here in California, Marin County. 20 minutes north of San Francisco. I lived in Hawaii for ten years on Maui. I would check the rents compared to Marin, and live wherever they were cheaper. I worked in the Restaurant business and always made much more income in Hawaii. Hawaii always offered more benifits in employment. I always called Hawaii “User Friendly”. Aloha!
The cost of living in Hawaii sounds comparable to Seattle except for groceries. That is real high, but everything else especially housing is actually less the in my area.
That's why I live Mainland now. No can afford Hawaii any more. I'm 26 single and bought house $368,000 lake front in the other Hawaii (Washington State) Hawaii born & raised

@@KienenKoga the radio station had 99 cents gas special promotion a while back, but the lines was around the block. I think it took an hour. Everyone was so excited. I forgot what station.
I'm guessing judging by the date of this video that gas has increased there as well, but currently in CA it's about 6.50/gal. Thanks for the info and best of luck to you...
Fr health insurance is a perk of Hawaii.. employrs ar required to cover 100% the premium costs. I pay $1000 month after my employer covers half for just myself and daughter.
So you're telling me it costs the same as it does for me to live in Rhode Island? My expenses: $5000 yearly heating bill, $350 monthly electric bill (thanks to my hot tub), cost for winter clothes, cost to own a pick up truck just to plow my own driveway, and high real estate taxes (which are triple here vs. there). Eating out is about the same.
The prime seems like a good deal there, even though shipping isn't faster - I would think shipping could get pricey if you had to pay it! I'm in the San Francisco Bay area and it's pretty comparable pricewise to live here vs. there. Hmm...
You look happy first of all. Only thing I worry about is medical insurance, I live in Canada and it’s one of the few things I’ve never had to think about.
Thanks for the info, have been suffering through below zero and single digit temps for over a week here in the midwest. I am retired with an income that pretty much matches your total costs. being retired, I assume the cost would be less living in areas where I would not be dependent on working, is that correct?
Bro!! I been thinking about this forever. Love your vibe and I’m so glad I found your channel. Also just curious, are there any chem E companies in Hawaii?
Thanks Shawn! Appreciate you watching! And honestly not that I know of. Im sure theres a couple out there; i know a couple chem es that joined construction actually lol
Our expensive place to live in... I love our island but the prices from grocery, gas, rents, foods are going up... $800 paycheck is not enough to cover for everything. You gotta have 2 or 3 jobs to accommodate all these expenses.. I am very lucky to lived here in this beautiful island!
First time I took my friend from Seattle grocery shopping, she just laughed and laughed. Honestly, I was a little irritated, then when she explained to me, I was just sad.
the information is really helpful, and the humor is puntastic :) :). Love it! BTW, what employer pays for 100% of your health insurance premiums? I've never found that anywhere in the US, even working for the federal government: it might be less than you'd pay on your own, but you still have to pay a decent amount that comes right out of your paycheck.
Thanks so much Meg! And yes, probably should be more clear on that; it comes out of our paycheck but not nearly to the amount we would have to pay if it was on our own.
Keep in mind that he's not saving any money at all, no mention of a Roth, 401k, or individual brokerage. Also, HOA fees are subject to change and can easily be $600-1500/ month. Gas is now $5+ a gallon, milk is $11/gallon for organic, and electric is $200-450/month for a SFH. To live somewhat comfortably and put money towards investments, you'll need to make $100k+
Was it difficult to get a pre-approval for a mortgage loan to buy a condo there? I’ve actually seen some condos near Honolulu (not in the middle of the city) that went for around $165,000 which is quite lower than most. What’s your views of buying a condo there rather than renting ? Thanks.
Not at all! Just a few hours at any lender (this one was Honolulu Home Loans, but my second condo was FHB). And yeah $165,000 is cheap! Buying to me is better than renting if you can make the numbers work. For example, if I were to rent a place similar to mine, I’d be paying roughly the same amount in rent as my mortgage+maintenance fees, but since I bought a home a portion of that goes to equity in the home whereas all the rent goes to your landlord and nothing back to you net worth. So buying to me only make sense over renting if you can make that happen which is tough in this market but not impossible to find. Awesome question!
First of all their is no such thing as a $165,000 condo and if you do find one you will surely regret it trust me you will be living in a slummy 2-3 story walk up surrounded by undesirable people if you know what I mean Try buying something decent In the range of $400,000 and up if you live in the east side or $300,000-375,000 on the west side not in the Waipahu area ,Kalihi Waianae and you should be ok
Not that bad really. I am single and used to live in the mountains. Guess, we had similar transportation issues and it increases prices. Add $1000/year car tags, 3.50/gallon, $99 internet, $120 for directv etc etc. Housing? You get a bigger house yes... do I use it all...no. 1000 sq ft would be more than enough. All in all, Hawaii is not that much more. If you think Hawaii is pricey try London.
I’m at a community college right now so I can transfer to Hawaii Pacific University and focus on my major, I decided to go to a community college because I come from a small area in upstate New York so I gotta save every penny and I can get rid of my GedEds 😂... I honestly can’t wait to move to Hawaii but this will definitely come in handy when I need to move off campus. To be completely honest I’m slightly terrified but mostly excited, especially so I can get rid of the snow! Sorry this is long and I don’t know if it makes any sense but yeah 😂
Hahaha no thats so awesome Andrea! I would hate the snow too lol anything below 70 is too frigid. Im glad my video helps! It is expensive here but to me its worth it and I’m sure you’ll think so too when you arrive. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I used to live in in Hawaii working for a national company, I ended up having to move to mainland cause my salary was high, could not shelter by buying a house cause at that time housing was 600 - 800 thousand dollars, so my income tax bill was too much to pay uncle Sammy, every year I would set up a payment plan with IRS....... Now I retired in south Texas where its sooooo much cheaper and looks like Hawaii, I have the best of both worlds..... Mahalo bra! oh also great video........
HELLO FROM SOUTH AFRICA ;) Got you to read, 3 dollars a gallon is reasonable, in terms of dollars per gallon, you pay R11/L, we pay R14,65/L and at the moment it's kind of low, it was R17/L, our price is about $4/gallon and it's low at the moment, we're kind of happy, it sometimes goes to $5/gallon, then we struggle, but that is just another day in South Africa :D

She Taught me a lot while is back Home in Honolulu About Living Frugal before I went back here to the mainland. Cheers Mate, Hope to move back to The Islands in the future.
Stop cutting living expenses, and start EXPANDING your income. Cutting is not a solution, it's a bandaid lol
I love this video, it's so chill and informative. I live in Southern California so it's almost the same costs as you.
Appreciate it! Thank you so much for watching! And yeah, pretty much in the same boat with high income tax too lol
I’m also in SoCal! San Diego lol
Honestly that's comparable to living in a Chicago suburb. The only major difference would be housing. Our condo here would be about 2x's more expensive in Hawaii ( square footage/ amenities/etc).
Dreaming of Hawaii 🥰
damn! I didn't know it was so expensive there
That’s it. i’m moving. hawaii is easy living financially compared to nyc 😭
Wait till you arrive you haven't seen the things that he hasn't covered or is hiding the real cost of living in Hawaii especially considering how much smaller it is compared to the mainland.
lol go for it!

Compared to California too
Soo you ever moved to Hawaii ? Lol
Can't compare NY to Hawaii.
Can you tell me more about the real Hawaii? Or do you know of any creators who talk about it?

$4.05 gallon in Cali for gas. I was on. Oahu last week and I was surprised gas was cheaper in Hawaii
Yeah ive been hearing California is expensive!
Really good video! Thanks for the numbers and scenery! 🤙
Sorry to hear, hope you can make it out one day!
@@KienenKoga I hope so to, but it might only be a visit.
I used to play a lot of golf before the pandemic started but wearing a mask and practicing was just a little too overwhelming so I haven’t practiced in a while.
hahah and golf in itself is already difficult!

You’re right! Sounds comparable!
LOL!
Hawaii looks like a beautiful place. I was suppose to go there for a week in August for a convention, but it was canceled because of the pandemic. This was a great video with some great humor😂😂😂.
Haha yeah im super lucky to live here! Sorry to hear, hopefully you can make it back out here soon. Thanks for watching bro!
Very interesting. Yeah we don’t have that large of a range of difference
I can't see living anywhere else.
nice!
Wow, the supermarket fresh food was super expensive.
He’s talking about groceries in addition to the cost of eating out. Not counting his parents free food. Not the cost of food for the whole month.
what does that mean?
The rent is comparable to Chicago but the thing that Hawaii doesn't have is ice and snow that make it hard to get to your job.
Very true!

Hawaii is much cheaper than San Francisco Bay Area. Its cost is comparable to LA.

Agreed, I'm in Sonoma County which isn't as expensive as SF, but it's about $1500 for a one-bedroom, $2300ish for a two bedroom. (Or lots more, depending)

I lived in Hawaii in the early 1980s. When I moved from Denver I was shocked at the rents! In Denver I had a small penthouse unit and paid $325/month. I found a lower unit at 1350 Ala Moana and it was $800/month! I imagine it is $3k or more now?
Wow. I live in Auckland, New Zealand and we pay $2.20/litre (NZD). Thats roughly $5.8/gallon (USD) when converted lol
hahaha I shouldn't be complaining!
It seems like you got it pretty well living on O’ahu, you only gotta pay $27 for registration! Lol
Jokes aside, I was born and raised on O’ahu.
Aloha!
Oh wow!! This video has been an eye opener! Thank you! But this should be compared to the basic salary too
I'd love to move to hawaii. Such a beautiful place
It really is!

The cost of living in Hawaii sounds comparable to Seattle except for groceries. That is real high, but everything else especially housing is actually less the in my area.
I don’t even know how to feel about this expensive house/rent stuffs! Where I live (in a southern state) rent on a house is $600!

I'm guessing judging by the date of this video that gas has increased there as well, but currently in CA it's about 6.50/gal. Thanks for the info and best of luck to you...
Solid content my guy!
I'm in the San Francisco Bay area and it's pretty comparable pricewise to live here vs. there. Hmm...
yeah you're probably right. Yeah San Francisco is expensive too....maybe a few years in Hawaii! haha
It is expensive, but no more than the Toronto area. Gas currently is $1.28 per litre or about $4.80 a gallon. The view make up the cost.

Thanks for the info, have been suffering through below zero and single digit temps for over a week here in the midwest. I am retired with an income that pretty much matches your total costs. being retired, I assume the cost would be less living in areas where I would not be dependent on working, is that correct?

Albuquerque, New Mexico Gas Price= $3.49. Hawaii is about a little bit over a dollar.
