Thanks for the helpful video. I followed this to change my fluid and filter this last weekend on our 2012 T&C with just over 120k miles. Transmission shifts like brand new again. It' so silky smooth. (Was fine before the fluid/filter change. Just even better now) One note though, when I finally got the pan loose, the fluid exploded out of it and made a huge mess on my garage floor all around the fluid catch pan that I had under the transmission. To others doing this, make sure to watch out for this by putting some aluminum foil or something behind the transmission pan so if the pan suddenly drops and the fluid "explodes" out, it will hit the foil and drain into your catch pan below instead of coming out sideways and all over your driveway or garage.

I'll try on my too but I will leave the fill plug off... may be the presurre will relieve... anyway, thanks for the comment... Quick question... Nice job, clear and concise info. Haven't done it yet, but I feel 100% confident in changing fluid and filter on our van after watching. Referring to Eric O as an expert always gains you points.
I installed WIX brand filter which is OE manufacturer and used the rubber gasket that came with it. Much easier than RTV application that requires expert application. Torqued the bolts and have zero leaks.
My trans. Pan was starting to leak. Measured 5 qts. Removed. The great stuff silicone direction says to tighten pan nuts just enough to see silicone squeezing out at edges. Then wait 30 minutes before torquing pan bolts. Wait another 90 minutes after that before adding fluid. I replaced the pan with a new one that has drain plug. Using the dipstick video added 5.5 qts of new fluid.
I really liked the video but a few things helpful (unless I missed them) and didn’t read all the comments. 1. What torx size for the filter and 2. What torque spec. For the pan bolts and 3. Any recommended torque pattern for the pan bolts? Thanks

Don't forget to install an auxiliary oil cooler....another $80 wasted I guess but heat is the number one killer of transmissions. My caravan is now 10 yrs old and runs like new
Considering the price of the new transmission on one of these beasts, a few quarts of ATF +4 any filter is pretty cheap. I just bought a new one of these vans last year and will probably change the fluid long before the service interval.
"South Main Auto" is Eric O, not "Eric The Car Guy". Those are 2 different TH-cam channels. So not to confuse people the video you seek is "South Main Auto" (Eric O).
I do believe that the 9 qts is for a transmission rebuild with new torque converter. A filter change is always less then the complete system capacity with an automatic transmission.
Great video, thank you! Out of curiosity, were you receiving the P0740 "torque converter clutch solenoid" code? I know a complete system flush is a common fix for this. Thank you for your feedback.
good video... however my new filter came with a metal ring and rubber seal at the end. I had to pry the old one off before I could put in the new filter... i took pics but couldn't add to the comment
I got my van used and needed new motor mounts and the transmission mount was the 1 most worn out. Would that damage the transmission and make it shift rough occasionally at slow speeds? The fluid is still red.
Rodney Smith a bad mount can make it feel Luke it’s shifting rough because the whole engine and transmission are moving when they shouldn’t be. The transmission fluid is red.
I had all 4 mounts replace but could that have done damage to the transmission. Now mostly it shifts smooth but will shift rough or jerk at slower speeds sometimes. I appreciate your return comment.
Rodney Smith bad mounts won’t ruin a transmission. Unfortunately these vans where just sold with bad transmissions. This customer ended up selling the van soon after the service because it didn’t fix the problem. The only fix is a rebuild
@@jth1987leb ic.carid.com/mopar/items/68145886ac_1.jpg the little silver thing. Looks like it was installed incorrectly last time it was changed. What's it's purpose? Would this have caused any issues with the transmission?
Luis Torre in my opinion no. I didn’t want to do the fluid change on this customers van but they were hoping it would fix the issue. It didn’t. So after the fluid change the transmission got worse and they sold it. If your transmission is not acting up don’t touch it. When it comes to automatic transmission fluid changes and flushes its best practice to keep to the manufacture service intervals from day one. If you don’t plan to keep to that schedule don’t mess with the transmission at all. Again, this is my opinion. I’m not a licensed mechanic

I have a 2015 3.6 motor it seems fine when you take off then it shifts hard and no more shift an try doing it manually does not work an the guy said the transmission was rebuilt a year ago
These transmissions are extremely unreliable. When he says rebuilt what level of rebuild does he mean? Did he just reseal it? Pull everything out and up all new clutch plates in? He also could have rebuilt it and forgot something. This customer had me do the fluid change and I made them understand that it is extremely unlikely to fix the problem. It didn’t fix the problem so a week lasted they traded it in on one something worse, but that’s a another story for another day.
No joking on this one. If people are going to use this as a learning video, they absolutely need to know that they can't just buy the cheapest fluid they find (which is usually Dexron). ATF+4 ONLY (unless ATF+5 is finally available now) in Chrysler/Dodge transmissions.
Kristopher Hasenbuhler over 100000 miles. This was a customer requested service. I strongly advised against it. The transmission was having shifting issues. This repair made it worse. Mopar has had transmission issues with these vans for years. When the transmission starts acting up it’s time to replace it. Customer ended up selling the van.
Any thoughts why the fluid change made the shifting issue worse? My 2011 Chrysler T&C is just over 97k miles and she's just starting to shift a bit hard at times.
You definitely replaced the transmission filter perfectly. I'm not convinced you changed the transmission fluid. Can we agree you dumped a little bit out of the pan? I was hoping to find a video of someone disconnecting the transmission fluid lines to the rad and letting the transmission, pump out the oil fluid while sucking up fresh fluid from the return line. I think the torque converter holds around 5 quarts. 9 in the whole system maybe? Great job with the gasket.
@@jth1987leb I agree. I confused fluid flush with fluid change. I hope someone that dumps the fluid in the pan once doesn't think they are good to drive 100,000 miles.
@@jth1987leb You could Fluid flush it if it's been within maintenance spec, however, In my case I will do a fluid change. Because I am within manufacturers spec for change. NOT flush. In fact, a flush could cause more problems if you don't follow manufacturers maintenance because, believe it or not, after you are too far overdue for a transmission fluid change, flushing it at that point could cause problems because the metal flakes in the fluid is acting as a gripping agent for your syncrhos. So if you are 50-100k overdue for a fluid change, it's best to just do a fluid change instead of a flush. Flushing is a touchy subject.
Have a question. Got my van used at 100,000mi and fluid is still red but sometimes it does not shift smoothly most when going at slower speeds and does lucas additive help at all? Any tips?

Choose your sealant carefully. Some say do not refill with fluid for 24h, others are 90 minutes, others are 5 minutes. Permatex Great Stuff Black. If it leaked the mating surface was probably not clean and dry. Note at the back it keeps dripping forever in the video. Mine does this too. Just need to soak up as much as possible from above and do it quickly. You should take it back to them. Their error . . .
The maintenance intervals this guy states is incorrect . There is very few cars that require 20000 mile transmission service . Severe service which is stated as police ,fleet , taxi or frequent towing is 6 years or 60000 miles . Normal service for everyday driving is 10 years or 120000 miles . Read your warranty book people and go by that . Use ATF+4 fluid only in these transmissions . You must be near me as we bought our van at Genessee Valley Dodge too .
@@jth1987leb the link you provided to SMA does not show you how to add the fluid, just how to check it. He was asking how to add it. @Liu Allen Use a skinny funnel, and you fill it up through the dip stick tube.
Two very important steps you did not describe. 1. You did not mention properly cleaning the surfaces where the gasket seal is applied. 2. You did not describe the proper bolt torque pattern - it appeared you just went around the outside - one bolt after another. Some would say neither of these things matter. I believe they do. Otherwise I enjoyed your video.
Then you don't know how to read an owners manual. It's 120,000 miles. If you drive under 'severe duty' conditions then 60,000. A service station will try to talk you into a fluid change at the 60,000 mark but if you're never towing then wait till 120,000 or when the fluid starts looking bad.

120,000 miles would make sense. I'd probably do it around 100,000 miles but 120 could work.
If you don't change the fluid, the trans is probably toast by 120,000 miles anyhow, I believe some manufacturers call that "lifetime fluid" lol
Fluid is about $60 for a drain....you want to wreck your car to save $60 when Chrysler transmissions are known to be fry prematurely ? I have 300,000 on my transmission.....runs like a swiss watch.
@@dm19609721
Where did you mount the trans cooler and which one did you use??
"South Main Auto" is Eric O, not "Eric The Car Guy". Those are 2 different TH-cam channels. So not to confuse people the video you seek is "South Main Auto" (Eric O).
Anyone know what size socket are the two torx screws? Doing this on my Chrysler Town and Country. Same year
I believe it's a T25.
I have the same Q 👍
Ditto, T25.
Is it okay to only change 5 out of 9 quarts? The whole system holds 9 quarts
I do believe that the 9 qts is for a transmission rebuild with new torque converter. A filter change is always less then the complete system capacity with an automatic transmission.
It’s helpful but if the fluid is real dirty I’d recommend a complete flush
Great video, thank you! Out of curiosity, were you receiving the P0740 "torque converter clutch solenoid" code? I know a complete system flush is a common fix for this. Thank you for your feedback.
Note that the torque converter still contains fluid. This service does not drain everything. Maybe 2/3, I can't exactly recall . . .
good video... however my new filter came with a metal ring and rubber seal at the end. I had to pry the old one off before I could put in the new filter... i took pics but couldn't add to the comment
Omg thank you so much you're a life saver 👍👍
Hurricane Javi I’m glad I could help
Thank You! Just did this today. Great Video!
HEY BUDDY HOW MANY QUARTS WILL IT TAKE
I got my van used and needed new motor mounts and the transmission mount was the 1 most worn out.
Did the fluid change fix the shifting issues
Replace the pan with one that has a drain, makes looking after these transmissions much faster and cleaner and easier.
What's that part right behind the Filter that's screwed in with a torx bolt called? No one can tell me!!!
Value body I believe
@@jth1987leb ic.carid.com/mopar/items/68145886ac_1.jpg the little silver thing.
Looks like it was installed incorrectly last time it was changed. What's it's purpose? Would this have caused any issues with the transmission?
Hello Great tutorial video! It's worth to do this to a 2011 town & country with 140k on it ? Thanks!
@@jth1987leb Thanks! for the reply 💪
@@jth1987leb OK... thanks for your opinion... mine is from 2012 and has 142K miles and no issues shifting... I was thinking to do it as preventive mean, but now I'm not sure about...
I have a 2014 Grand Caravan and in the manual says under normal operating transmission oil change has to be done at 192.000 km. Any ideas?
@@jth1987leb There are some kits available for these that can solve specific issues. Some are not that hard to install, others are. Depending what's going on. I agree once the vehicle has gone past a certain point it's better not to change it.

do you need wait for gasket dry? before you put oil in there?
Yes. I used a fast drying gasket.
An aftermarket drain pan with drain plug is available from Dorman for 40 bucks. Fyi
It's worked out great for me
Listen buddy, it sucks living hand to mouth I get it. But my comment was for informational purposes. If there are people out there that belive in changing your trans fluid every 30k miles like myself then the pan with drain plug installed already is the way to go. It was an incredible INVESTMENT that 40 bucks. Peace out my ninja
That's great news

What's the torque on transmission bolt pans
it depends on where you look. can be as low as 50 in lbs or as high as 125 in lbs. I did not put that info in there because I do not want to mis-inform the views. I did 80 in lbs
Wrench it right before it breaks . .
And it Should be fine.
I am a first timer. Liked n subscribed. Any idea why Dodge has done such a stupid annoying thing like dealer Only?
gazoomartian most manufacturers are doing it now
What about the type of fluid that goes in it?
Mir Ullah use Mopar.
Atf +4
Did it fix the slipping?
lol no and the customer knew it would likely not work. They traded it in
Thanks... missing the specs for parts, fluids, quantities and torque... to be perfect
Interval in the service manual is 120K miles/192K kms or 12yrs, not 2yrs 24k miles as stated in the video. For fleet vehicles even it's 60K miles.
Did your transmission stop working after this
I hope you used ATF+4 in this when you re-filled it.
Darren MacKenzie nope. I find water to have the best viscosity
No joking on this one. If people are going to use this as a learning video, they absolutely need to know that they can't just buy the cheapest fluid they find (which is usually Dexron). ATF+4 ONLY (unless ATF+5 is finally available now) in Chrysler/Dodge transmissions.
How much oil need to add. ?
Right how much oil did you add?
@@DarkpawTheWolf how many quarts of ATF 4?
how much fluid?
How many miles are on your Dodge caravan now?
Bruce Davies this is what you’d get at the dealer and the call it a fluid change. What you are referring to is a fluid flush
Anybody know what size torx bit it takes for the filter?
James Stewart I’m almost certain a they are T20 torx.
Just did mine, it was T25 to my surprise.
Not always is trans fried with shavings in pan like that i've serviced many thru years that lasted tens of thousands miles that way.
Have a question. Got my van used at 100,000mi and fluid is still red but sometimes it does not shift smoothly most when going at slower speeds and does lucas additive help at all? Any tips?
And after I did the filter, before I put it back together, I drilled a hole in the pan, threaded it, and put in a drain plug.

How many quarts of transmission oil would it need ?
Between 5 and 5.5 quarts ATF+4

My vw dealer changed my atf @75k miles on vw routan 2012 aka t&c. I believe they didnt do a good job coz now the transmission is leaking oil after 10k miles
Their error . . .

How much transmission fluid
Dixie Hatfield link in description
I think you got way to much sealant on the pan. To much will break off and get in the filter and plug it up. A little goes a long way here.

Excelent great
Two very important steps you did not describe. 1. You did not mention properly cleaning the surfaces where the gasket seal is applied. 2. You did not describe the proper bolt torque pattern - it appeared you just went around the outside - one bolt after another. Some would say neither of these things matter. I believe they do. Otherwise I enjoyed your video.
owners manuals says every 60k for this service.
Yeah, the manual's slated interval is much higher than what a dealer claims, agreed. Go figure. ;)
Then you don't know how to read an owners manual. It's 120,000 miles. If you drive under 'severe duty' conditions then 60,000. A service station will try to talk you into a fluid change at the 60,000 mark but if you're never towing then wait till 120,000 or when the fluid starts looking bad.
@@jayryan7473 so I tow a small trailer, like 1500 lbs with our 2014 DGC. I have 84k miles on the van. I only about 15,000 of those are mine.
