Dan, I used to be in the USAF and was mostly a crew chief. Loved flying over the city with the cabin or ramp down. The evening flights over Albuquerque were very plesent.
Hey Diesel, I come from a military family, my dad spent 23 years in marines as cobra a pilot and my mother did 13 years between the army and marines and left as a staff sergeant. I myself am on my own path to becoming a Marine Corps naval aviator and I already have some seat time in an MH-60 through the navy. We are a huge fan of you and everything you guys do. If you are able you should have a fan meet because we would love a chance to meet you in person and thank you for all your work as would many other fans.

As well as selling parts that they make that you can't buy anywhere to merchandise to a ton of businesses they own and operate. It seems to me that Dave has been very successful in many ventures he tackles. Plus he is a you tube sensation! I’m 100% disabled vet and want to tell you thank you for doing what you do. I can’t wait to see what you do with this and would love to be able to come ride in one again. The last Blackhawk ride I had was also my last jump with the 82nd airborne. Riding in one and possibly being able to fly one would be a definite bucket list item and am excited to hear the details about the non-profit. You got that right. My first ride in a helicopter (UH-1) back in 1973 put a smile on my face that never came off and I eventually became an army helicopter pilot.
20 year Veteran USAF, Aircraft Structural Repair Technician, 7 Level. Of the many Airframes I worked on, F-4, F-16, F-15, F-111, A-10, C-130 is included the HH-60 Blackhawk with the 41st Para-Rescue Squadron at Moody AFB. I am familiar with the major cracks that can and often do happen in the major structures and how important it is to inspect, find and repair these components. If you are in need of any help please let me know. I actually also repaired a US Army Blackhawk while on a TDY with the 41st Rescue Squadron over in Kuwait.
The 41st liked my work so much I was rewarded with an Incentive Flight with them at Moody AFB. The Para-Rescue pilots are "nuts" and do things with a helicopter I had no idea before that could be done. They even did a max climb all the way to a stall and while we were falling from the sky like a rock, they have a check list they have to go through to get the engines back up and running, then the blades moving, then the blades catching air in order to produce lift again. All the while I was sitting on the outside seat in the back, door wide open. My first and only helicopter ride was just a bit scary! Fun though.

Heavy D. I have spent the last 39 years in Army Aviation. All of that time was dedicated to maintenance and flight crew operations. I wanted to say, I absolutely appreciate the fact that you have chosen to spend the money to get your aircraft airworthy. Also thanks for taking the time to explain how much of an effort it is to own and maintain a UH-60A and how much administration goes into owning your own aircraft.
I wanted to also give a separate shoutout for you putting forth the effort to burn the blade hours, by inviting and allowing veterans to get a ride on your aircraft.

EH - How true that is. Owning and maintaining any rotor wing craft can be difficult, critical and expensive. A Ft. Rucker alum here...trained during the dark ages (1963) and we referred to the choppers as "fling wing death traps."
@@paulsullivan6392 Brother, I understand. Most helicopters back in those days, were very under powered, sensitive to heat and humidity.
I have friends that have retired that were in Rucker in the 60's. They told me about going from the H-13, 23 to the OH-6A Cayuse and from the H-19 to the UH-1 series. They thought they were in heaven because the new turbine style engines provided so much more power.
I know a guy by the name of Paul Chambers. He went to Bell back in 68-69 time frame and picked up a brand new UH-1H from the factory. He was the only crew chief on that aircraft throughout it's life span.

I work on these every day, for 8 years Army and now as a civilian, doing phase maintenance as an airframe structures mechanic. To come out of this inspection with only that one major repair is impressive. it's cool to see this go from being military to being a civilian-owned aircraft. Looking forward to more vids.

He is sooo glazing over the surface and only touching the high points!!! But he is explaining a lot I have not heard others talk about. The process of getting a retired military aircraft back in the air in the hands of non military people is daunting to say the least.
I’ve been a UH-60 mechanic for 11 years in the Army. Everyone wants to talk about how redundant and over the top our maintenance programs are compared to other branches but this shows how effective they are if done correctly.

Former OH-58 crew chief here. What I appreciate a lot is just how information dense you make this video, yet you do it in such a way that makes it easy for a normal person to understand. Low key envious that you have the $$ to do this, but very happy for you that you are able to, and especially that you are preserving this for posterity as well as personal use.

Dave, at the end of this video, you brought me to tears. Just to think that veterans like myself could have the chance to fly again in our airframe we once did for 1000’s of hours. I personally have 1000hrs in model, and miss it every single day. I was a Combat Search And Rescue crewman, and a SAR swimmer for 8yrs. I look forward to researching this program you’re setting up! I bet it was on the 308 beam. If it was beefed up during the repair, keep an eye on the right front chin bubble frame area for the next crack to appear. Known fact is when one area on a Blackhawk is repaired, it merely moves or transmits the stress point to another location.

I'm glad you're creating a neat program for military veterans. To have such an experience under non-threatening conditions may be healing as well. Laying down a new track of memories likely filled with good times will be amazing. Thank you for making this happen for the guys and gals who gave our country their time, talent, energy, and effort. They help keep our country in one piece in body & soul.
I also have a military family background. I recently read that a grandfather back to the 1700's was an admiral. His nickname was Commodore. My family members have served in the military branches of Army, Navy, and Air Force. I believe there has been family members in every war since the beginning of these United States of America.

As a non-destructive inspector in aviation I'm happy for the guys who found the crack: good job ! I know it sucks for the owner because of the costs, but that also means that everyone gets to fly safely once it's repaired because life is worth more than money. Great video, thanks for the details! Could this have been found before buying the chopper ? Or no because I imagine you could have used it as leverage in negotiations.
@@Apolloneek depending on where the crack was located, it may not have been detected until either a phase maintenance, or complete tear down for paint and other wise.
Those cracks (from my experience) come around that main gear box.
@@HvyMetal4Ever well coming from automotive I would have found something like frame damage during a through pre purchase inspection gonna be honest most people don't buy those before they purchase something but when it comes to airplane I imagine a lot of things could be hidden damage wise

@@yourface3154 I personally am qualified in FPI, Eddy Current (ET) and Ultrasound. I'd say they started with a visual inspection then either used FPI or ET (depending on specs) to check the length of that crack. I guess it appears it was big enough to prompt a complete replacement of the beam and reinforcement of the whole area to prevent it happening again.
As a retired USAF pilot and current freightdawg flying heavies, I love your passion for aviation and hearing about your dream. Not many people have the opportunity or resources to do what you are doing and it is cool seeing you share your journey online for others to see.

When you get to the section of the manual about the helicopters ability to spit out the sand it breathes in, you've got my Dad, and 4 other guys from GE Aviation to thank for that.
The Army was experiencing failures, at the onset of Operation Desert Shield, due to the Blackhawks engines choking on the dust coming into the intakes.
5 guys from the Lynn Mass. Riverworks plant designed a solution.
So, now you've got a few more pages to study, but, a much more capable helicopter.
My pants just got tighter.

Incredible! I have about 2500 hours in the Hawk (US Army '97-'13) and miss flying that amazing machine. I hope to see it in the air soon and maybe one day get to fly it myself.

I had the opportunity to fly in a couple of these as a Tanker in the Army in Iraq in 2008-2009 for a couple air assauls. It was an amazing experience. Good on you brother for getting what you wanted and for reaching out to the veteran community as well as others in the future.
I work with a reserve surgeon/pilot! Flies F 16 but said the most fun he ever had was learning and flying the Blackhawk! Thank you for bringing us along, you guys are a blast and I'm never sure what's next.
I've been searching surplus 60s on gov auctions for a long time and thought they usually sold cheap, relatively speaking, but after seeing everything you are having to do, I've realized this is pretty much an unreachable goal. Glad to see someone achieve what I always dreamed of. I will live vicariously through you. Can't wait to see that beautiful helo in the air.

At 2-4k (usually in the middle at 3K) to operate per hour. Deep pockets are a necessity. That isn't including fuel.

Absolutely dynamic! As an old guy. VIETNAM VET. I salute you for your compassion, love and dedication to your craft, and love for the Vet.
Too young to have seen it myself, but my parents worked in the Forest Service with vietnam guys. They'd get UH-1B's from the Army and redo them for use with fighting fire, either hauling crews, gear, or big ass buckets. But what they both remember the most was one of the pilots asking the crew boss "Hey, you mind if I wash my bird?" Boss assumed he meant like, hose it down and such and said "Go for it." Instead, the mad lad just gets down into the river and lets the wash spray the fuck out of it.
So when Dave says he got a bird with no holes, I am doubly impressed :D
Although not on the Blackhawk, I was a crew chief on the Chinook in Iraq and other fun places. Offering a new flight experience to Veterans who only have trauma associated with the memories of flying is a wonderful thing to do! It would probably be the one remaining thing I need to do to come to terms with my experience over there and reassociate those memories to something fun and non-traumatic. Well done guys! Love everything you do and how it fulfills your own dreams, but also gives back in such a meaningful way!!!
Always good to see a stand up guy like D realize his dreams. While the majority of your fans will never be able to buy and maintain a Blackhawk, we can enjoy watching you. We know you will do great things with that bird. As a Navy veteran, I would like to thank you for what you are doing for other vets. I personally have no desire to fly in helicopters. We will never be able to privately buy and maintain a Blackhawk, but we sure do contribute to buying, operating, and maintaining the active fleet whenever we pay our taxes! In addition to that we pay the paychecks of those who operate and maintain them. We the People are the original owners of that bird and we wish HeavyD and his team well. The fact that he will continue to make content as well as help the Veteran community means that we will still continue to get something out of our investment.
Hey Dave, I watched this twice because there was a lot of emotional things going on in this video and I could hear a little crackle in your voice and the way you moved around , even the way you looked showed how much you wanted this to happen so you could achieve one of your dreams and let all of us share it with you.! Sounds like you had the typical crack in either the floor beams, or the upper fuselage structure. Common occurrence on Blackhawks that do a lot of sling loading. There was a company at HeliExpo this year showing a brace system they have created to spread out loading and prevent those cracks from occurring.

@MX304 Sounds like something Dave should look into. With all the work they are constantly doing I would say this helicopter will get used for work more than pleasure. His other helicopter will probably remain as the cruising/trip taking copter and this one for work I would say. Makes sense to look into this though for sure.

I was a 15Tango of course there wasn’t anything wrong with the helicopter. an awesome job that I miss dearly. You got a 79 but that means nothing. These aircraft were maintained heavily. We had preflight post flight weekly and monthly phases these aircraft would go through. We treated these things like Bugattis. Anyhow love the content. Your living the dream. 🥂

@@db5757 The Army is where I cut my teeth in aviation. 25 years later I am still listening to WOs about how hard they have it. Now they just lay around EMS bases looking for reasons not to fly.

@@xrevreflexions833 Back when I was in my MOS was a 67T, I believe yours is redesignated to a 15T now isn't it?
Yes it went from 67T (Huey mechanic) to 15T (UH-60 Blackhawk mechanic)
@@normanadams6008 actually it was 67T Tactical Transport Helicopter Repairer and it was for UH-60 and maybe for the UH-1 Huey. I went in as a UH-60 (67T) Mechanic but my first unit still had Hueys so I had to OJT on the Huey and was on flight status on the Huey and when we fielded the Blackhawk I kept the same 67T MOS. The MOS's designator changed years later to I believe a 15T. I got out in 92, and the MOS designator changed to 15T after that. I do not know what the Huey designator was but I enlisted for and was one of the earlier classes to train on the new Blackhawks at Ft. Eustis, Va. back in the mid 80's and my MOS was 67T.
Watching someone's dream come to reality is an awesome experience. My compliments to you and especially to your crew behind the scenes for managing to capture it so perfectly and put it on the screen. You guys rock and it's a joy following along with your exploits. I've been through your area a time or two (wife is from Lewiston, ID) with my Jeep, enjoying the trails and beauty of the area. Fingers crossed that I never need your services but if I do my mind will be at ease because you guys are absolute pros at what you do. I'm a Navy vet from the Vietnam Era, and I drove ambulances for 14 years in NYC and retired with PTSD. Now I run a website and forum for preppers and those who do as you do and step up in times of need. Thank you for stepping up and being an inspiration for others to follow.

One of my LEO buddies sent me this series of videos, while I’m recovering from cervical spine surgery. He said, “I found the perfect watchlist for you, ‘Crewdog’, and it’s gonna make you jealous”, and he was right.
Since leaving the Army, as a Blackhawk Crewchief, in 2004 I’ve so missed the rush of hanging out of that window and feeling the wind as we NOE through the mountains.

On a T-701 engine, the hot end, GG rotors specifically, spin at around 41k rpm at 100%. For that reason, the 2 GG rotors and the bolts that mount them are a matched set and you can't replace just 1 rotor. A set is about $100k to $120k in just parts, maintenance is extra.

@@thatguy8751 There are 6 bolts that are matched in weight that hold the 2 GG rotors to the aft end of the compressor shaft. The bolts alone are almost $300

I’ve been a Blackhawk mechanic in the army for 6.5 years and still currently am working with UH-60A/L and HH-60M in the MEDEVAC. Be careful how much stuff you take out and where you take it out of. There’s always going to be CG (center of gravity) issues once you start removing a significant amount of weight from one area. These aircraft are very aft heavy so if you remove too much weight from up front, the CG is gonna get worse and worse
Most of that wiring will will be for ASE which is APR-39, chaff/flare dispensers, CMWS and other after market GFE gear to possibly include radios. There may be VMEP-MSPU wiring mods too but that was all non-integrated vibe monitoring AMCOM pushed without going through Sikorsky. I don't think I noticed an HF antenna on this bird. Did you see one?

The company doing the retrofit and upgrades has been doing it for a while, and I'm sure they have already dialed in the CG shifts for everything coming out and going in. Otherwise, they wouldn't still be in business. I know we had Weight and Balance shift charts for everything we did at Orlando Helicopter Airways where I was the lead Avionics Tech after I retired from the USAF as an Avionics Tech.

Care with the hyd system in the cold when you get it home. We were going through gallons of hyd fluid in the artic cause the seals would shrink and leak out. Navy seahawk could of been cool for the blade fold into your hanger but aviation electronics are disgustingly expensive. It would be sick if you could get the seahawk flir turret mount for the nose and set up a hollywood aircraft camera on it.

SH-60 blade fold is why more complicated than an UH-60. The USCG locked out their blade & pylon fold systems, to save weight and money.
Same with our Chinooks. If it ain't leaking, I ain't flying cause it's empty!

Dave, I was in the Army in the 80's stationed in Germany. We flew air missions (just one of the troops) in various helo's, jolly green giants, cobras, small scout helicopters and what I rode in Vietnam era chinooks. There were al lot of bullet holes covered in Duct tape. It was always a lot of fun, I miss those times. If you get the ride thing going i would love experience it again put me on the list. As an aircraft technician, I could not imagine the ASTRONOMICAL cost of doing a heavy inspection on a helicopter...yet alone a former military helicopter. Crazy money.
Its just crazy all around to me. Aluminum has a limited lifespan no matter how small the forces applied and a military unit is going to be beat to hell. Definitely has to be a project of passion otherwise its just scrap, to me atleast

In my oppinion, the Blackhawk is hands down the best looking helicopter ever built. And almost everyone who sees a Blackhawk recognizes and likes it. Its massive appearance just manages to impress everyone no matter their age. I hope that you and your guys can enjoy the Blackhawk for as long as possible and get some good videos out of it for us to watch ;-) Good flight!
I think Apaches and Cobras are much more aggressive looking than a Blackhawk for military helis. The most fun however for pure quick maneuvering in tight canyon terrain is the Hughes 500 series. For high altitude work and moderate lifting, the Llama from Aérospatiale is awesome.
This is awesome, I was a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and jumping out of the Blackhawk was one of my favorite jumps…would be amazing to jump from your Blackhawk! Congrats on your Blackhawk purchase!

Amazing what your doing heavy d. My step dad was a helicopter gunner when he was in the military and he always wanted to get back up in one. Sadly he was never able to before he passed. I think it's simple amazing that your gonna do that. Keep up the Mazing work man.

Ive always been so impressed by military as well as civilian aircraft mechanics. The amount of work and knowledge it takes to keep these modern marvels flying is amazing, and I have the ultimate respect for everyone who does it.

This is a great opportunity for recruiting for the National Guard. It would be cool to see more of how they operate, what it takes to become an Army helo pilot, and other career opportunities. It would be a good way for them to offer you some training while giving them 2 million viewers to see how they work behind the scenes.
In my 20+ years working on the Blackhawks and Seahawks the 308 beam is prone to cracking. Not a quick, nor inexpensive repair. The 60 is a great bird and it will serve you well. The T700 (GE401C) are bullet proof as long as they haven't ingested a crap ton of desert sand. Being yours hasn't been in the sandbox it hasn't had the sand fuse in the cooling ports of the nozzles and wheels. Should be a beautiful example when she is done.
Agreed. I worked on MH-60 for years and have found cracks similar to this. I’ve also found cracks in the transition section as well. If you’re planning on flying in the desert I highly recommend to get the upgraded Engine Air Particle Separator and engine washes after each dessert ops.
I only worked -60s for two years but in those two years I've probably repaired/replaced 20 308 beams (usually because of the winch load)
I figured it was the 308 beam, replaced a lot of them.

As an airline pilot I get to fly cool large jets, and when they break, some one else gets to fix them. And pay for them! I have also worked in the private sector. As a private owner/operator of something as complex as a Blackhawk I know how nerve wracking it is inspecting expensive components like drive train and turbines. But, as we all know, better to find problems on the ground! No matter the expense! Cool paint job in itself is not cheap! No Earl Scheib $99.95 paint job for a Blackhawk! Ha-ha! Glad your structural issue was fixable. Very cool there is a sim available for training. I am sure the FAA is extra strict before they cut loose a civilian Blackhawk, and civilian Blackhawk pilots! I was a phase mechanic for thr Maine Army National Guard full time for about 2 and a half years and a part time guardsmen mechanic for 5. I know the amount of work that goes into keeping these awesome machines in the air. Glad to see you have a crew of mechanics that put pride into thier work. And yes it's very expensive to maintain. I'm sure army maintenance regs are a bit overkill but it was nothing for us to throw out $500 worth of "good" hardware because the manual said they were single use. The bolts that hold the spindles into the main rotor hub costs about $1,200 alone. Costs add up fast. Pretty sure a single main rotor blade is close to $200k.
Can’t wait to see that Blackhawk in use. I spent six years on that airframe, in Iraq, and post-Katrina New Orleans. I also spent years on the civilian side, and while they’re hardly considered massive on the military side I can imagine how impressive they are held against what you see on most GA ramps.

Dang. A month is great time to complete all the inspections and that repair. Have seen some contractors take 2 months. Kudos to those guys they have a good team.
I fully expect you to get through the pilot stuff in one go, You are one of the most clued up well organised people I've ever seen on TH-cam.
Your plan is rather ambitious but certainly worthy. Mine came from DRMO-SD and I felt very fortunate to only have $500k invested in airworthy maintenance. My upgrades ran $340k but worth every penny. All in all the ship is still worth much more than my investment. Great aircraft to fly you're going to love it.

used to get NEW in Box/Bag from DRMO Rock Island, when i was hunting gear for my old Cadet Unit.
If this aircraft came from Fort Rucker, there’s a good chance I worked on it. All of the aircraft here get flown like crazy and beat up but we fix them up like new every PMI 1 and 2. We keep these flying for our student pilots.
I would hope it comes out great. I’m an aviation mechanic myself, I can definitely know how expensive repairs can get even on the federal side.

I work on these, not for the Army, and they are great aircraft as long as you do all the required inspections. Do your inspections the same as the military and this aircraft will run tip top! If you need anything for the aircraft at all please reach out! Enjoy and God Speed!

I was the third school trained Blackhawk mechanic in the Utah Army national guard in July 1990. I was in the 1/211 attack battalion. I went active duty, went to many places, deployed to Iraq, have performed almost every mission the Blackhawk can do and I have over 700 flight hours plus many more on test flights. I have my A&P, have worked on numerous airframes, and I am now working on drones. Enough of me. Thank you for keeping the veterans in your heart and goals.
That sounds awesome to see stuff being done for veterans. Serving in Iraq my 2 happiest memories out of many was when I left for leave. One was a combat take off and landing in a c130 Hercules what a ride. Second was a combat take off flying very close to the ground and a landing that did not feel natural in a black hawk helicopter very capable air frame.
I love that you are doing this. I was a MTP on Hawks in the Army and I am living vicariously through you guys right now! Can't wait to see your first Cav takeoff in it :)
