Very sad seeing this whole debacle unfold and delighted to hear that the local authority appears to be taking it seriously and looking at a rebuild. There are so many hundreds of similar cases around the country, perhaps not with such quirky heritage buildings, that local authorities almost appear to be complicit. How many shabby seafront hotels are conveniently destroyed by arson to facilitate shiny new apartment blocks? No action is ever taken. Fingers crossed for the rebuild of the ‘Crooked House’.
It is the only "public house" that has had more visitors since it was destroyed than its last 6 months of trading. I don't agree with the way it was destroyed, but if all of these folk had supported it while it was open, it wouldn't have been sold off as a loss maker!
The point is potentially multiple criminal offences have been committed here. It is right to set an example with this one. If found guilty, then land should be taken off them, by compulsory purchase. Prison sentences also. Yes, I am living very close by to where The Crooked house was, and yes i am devastated for the loss of this amazing and unique building. Also sad for all the locals which this meant so much to them about their heritage. I fell in love with this quirky little place when i first went there 13 years ago when i moved to the Black country, my now Husband so excited to take me to The Crooked house, and later on we had our wedding there. You can only really understand what a loss it is unless you've been there. So i hope this comes to fruition, although it will never be the same, the example must be set.

And that TH-camr may indeed help with the restoration! The only way a restoration can happen is if the builders have a source of what the original layout looked like.

They better - there is a precedent set already (as per the video) that the Planning Inspectorate would rule for a rebuild for a pub 100yrs old so why not for a pub 200yrs old?
Nah, it's down to the locals. If the locals put up a fight, the council will have to listen. The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale case says it all. Burnt down in suspicious circumstance in 2015, taken to court by locals and the council to rebuild it brick by brick, work started in 2017 and only finished recently. There's plenty of news footage, tv slots and photos of The Crooked Inn over the years so, compared to The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale, there's plenty of info to "reconstruct" The Crooked Inn.
It was supported but there was a mysterious break in and Marston breweries told the landlord not to open up intill repairs were completed. The access road to the pub was littered with rubbish from the tip next door tip.

They are all within 20 miles radius of The Crooked House. Some may be genuine accidents and not all were missed by the locals, being derelict or eyesores. Others were much loved but inconveniently in the way. I'm not implying anything, other than this seems kind of a common occurrence. Does anyone else know of any more? Thats a lot of bricks to wire brush and re palletise and wrap. All slates must be cleaned and graded. And re stacked in wooden crates. It saves time and space, and builders handle like new material saving costs eventually.
What is the point in rebuilding The Crooked House in its original location? One of the reasons why it was sold by Marstons was because it was in a remote location, in the middle of a landfill, vulnerable to burglary (it was burgled and ransacked about a month before it sold), to get to it involved driving down a rutted track, past rubbish stacked in lay-bys- there was a reason why the pub was failing…….why not make the ‘owners’ re-build it closer to the centre of a community, so at least it has a chance at surviving as a going concern!
The did it to The Earl of Leicester pub in Norwich . Bootiful building and they knocked it down and years later the Local Authority still haven’t allowed anything to be built on this site !
In my town Lidl bought an old pub, & they were told the frontage of their new store MUST incorporate the frontage. Two week after the sale the pub was burnt down???
Rebuilding as it was can easily be done, but the unique nature of its “crooked” stance will mean employing specialist expertise, techniques, and materials costing hundreds of thousands of pounds more that a “straight” building occupying the same footprint, with the same internal layout… It wouldn’t feel the same.. But it would be a monument to the cultural heritage it represents, and should the current owners be found guilty of having demolished it or having been responsible for it being demolished illegally, it will send a strong message to morally bereft property developers throughout the U.K. that attempting to subvert the system for profit is counter productive..
Although another guy in the post above yours is bemoaning that we can't rebuild it and shouldn't because it would be just a fairground attraction, the principle should be the goal: we don't destroy historical buildings without the proper channels. The pub did cost a lot to maintain but the people buying it should know that and shouldn't have demolished it without the permissions and, for them to not see what happen in the The Carlton Tavern case, is already a warning that the are likely to lose legally and, yes, I believe it should be rebuild "brick by brick" as a legal deterrent and a reminder that, for what we stand for in the world, we preserve our history as best as we can.
I had no idea this occurred! My folks went there a when they were last back in the UK. A sad loss to the community, as are all structures from history that either succumb through time, or torment! IF, it was done without permission, and more than likely, an 'accidental' fire, then the owners should be prosecuted. As for rebuilding it on 'private' land, well that is another issue. But the owners, most likely either a corporation or developer, should be heavily scrutinized. I just came across another video before posting, and I was right, it was bought by a real estate business, which also owns land adjoining. Intentional act, in order to build a housing estate and make millions! There is precedent for rebuilding historical buildings, as it has been done for many years, such as at Avoncroft Museum, just outside my old hometown of Bromsgrove, Worcs. I admit, the 'replication' will be immensely difficult, and expensive(as these kind of building are 'demolished' in a planned process, which is why the owners/perpetrators should be burdened with the expense. There have been many cases like this in the past, in order to 'bypass' regulations, including my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia, when many years ago, the old ABC 'heritage' listed building was 'accidentally' hit with a crane and wrecking ball, to the extent that the building was made unsafe, and had to be demolished, and no actions were taken to prosecute anyone. It is sad enough just to see old pubs shut down, and if not turned into houses, demolished after many years of falling into disrepair. But ones so iconic, to be a tourist attraction, well the Council and Government should be more protective at the start.
Alan and Carly Taylor of ATE Farms Ltd. They own the property and the landfill site. It was going through for redevelopment for industrial and office space earlier this year by Staffordshire County Council, somewhere where Alan Street has no jurisdiction.
No development until its resolved. There are consequences for arrogance such as this which isnt new and happening routinely all over. @@dalebenton3354 well assuming these people.are taxpayers. It should come out of their money, not the taxpayers These greedy easy folk have to be taught a lesson.🤬
Unlikely, the Planning Inspectorate forced the developers to foot the bill in the The Carlton Tavern case. James Watson, the Campaign for Pubs protection advisor, thought the developers would get a slap on the wrist and a 6k fine but the developers had to appeal because they knew it would cost them (not the taxpayer) to redevelop it all back to what it was. It's been rebuilt now since the ruling in 2015. (Plenty of sources online).
Perhaps rebuilding could include using young aspiring people who would like a career in building and design. Feel sure there be quite a few near Dudley.
Something like this happened where I live in Germany. There was a house that was a site of historic interest and had been empty for many years. Surprisingly, a fire broke out and destroyed the house. Eventually the rubble was cleared away. It looks suspicious because new houses were built quite recently next this old house. 🤔

I've been there several times over the years. This needs to be prosecuted to the highest level. And needs rebuilding end of. Current technology should enable this.
Actually, it's not "current" technology, The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale was rebuilt brick by brick because Historic England were thinking of listing it so they took photos and plaster casts (this happened before the demolition) since there wasn't any media or photos that existed to measure the significance of the place. Over the years, The Crooked House has been in news slots, wedding photos, tourist photos, probably Google maps and probably at least a couple of documentaries from TV (if not, maybe on someone's VHS) and (hopefully) some home videos. Combine that and the living accounts of the people who have worked there, the "technology" is actually the memories that we treasure.
Easier to get change of use if the existing purpose built premises isn't there. The enforcement notice will require them to rebuild it in a structurally sound fashion. They can ultimately be locked up for not complying with a notice but that costs the local authority loads for a prosecution. If they wanted to rebuild the property so it is structurally sound anyway, then the developer gets a win, win.
Let’s hope that Andy sticks with this and makes it happen. Don’t let these criminals prosper from this situation.

So you wanna rid the billionaires, the tech giants, the military industrial complex, the national security state, the oligarchs, the monarchy and the entire Etonian Whitehall Establishment elite???? Good luck with that.
You sound like a looney . Have you been on the shandy ?
Who you gonna get rid of? And what does that have to do with this pub/case?
Agree ! 💯
@@OriginalJoseyWales You don't know the details, do you?
Very sad seeing this whole debacle unfold and delighted to hear that the local authority appears to be taking it seriously and looking at a rebuild. There are so many hundreds of similar cases around the country, perhaps not with such quirky heritage buildings, that local authorities almost appear to be complicit. How many shabby seafront hotels are conveniently destroyed by arson to facilitate shiny new apartment blocks? No action is ever taken. Fingers crossed for the rebuild of the ‘Crooked House’.
And may all historic property past and present see justice 😊
I never knew it existed until I saw it on a you tube video about 6month ago and was absolutely floored, I knew there and then I was going to go see it some day soon but in no rush as it's going to be there for ever, so seeing this on the news blew me away How? Why? What happened? As soon as i heard what happened, being the same story as all historic demolitions, makes me so angry it's just got to stop 😢
@@Victoria-mg5bt I know it is really upsetting people get away with this sort of thing. They've messed with the wrong pub though, the good people of the Black country won't stand for it. I too never heard of The crooked house before I moved here either, which shows really that this was the falling of the brewery in the first place, advertising and lack of it. They should have never sold this amazing and unique jewel that they once had.
I'm hoping that we all get to hear an update soon about arrests etc, seems like a long time waiting.
Put the owners in prison , its a disgrace ,
Mite of not been the owners,Could of been any one touched the place,Some ones touched it and made it go up in one big massive blaze of fire
@@dalebenton3354 Bit convenient though that the torching of the Crooked House meant the fire crews were delayed to getting to the location and that a digger was able to knock it all down before a proper investigation went ahead into the cause of the fire.
@dalebenton3354 nope the Taylor family burnt it after buying it to expand their Landfill next to the historic pub.
Crooks
A few years ago 400 tons of rubbish at his landfill site caught alight
I didn't know the demolition was booked before the house was burned down.
There’s too much destruction of historical buildings in Britain in the name of ‘progress’, any building almost certain to be replaced by an eyesore of modern ‘design’. I hope this pub does get rebuilt and the criminals who destroyed it should be jailed as an example to greedy developers.
I'm with you on that one 😊
Why did they quickly illegally demolish the brick building shell??? That's almost worse than the fire.
Destroying evidence. Accidentally.
Greed. He'd done it before. God this country is so corrupt.
This is as important as Farrage v Coutts. Well done, enforce honesty and integrity and re-build.
Another sad heritage loss, but better to see money spent in investigating the loss and possible succesfull prosecution rather than "brick by brick" rebuild. Devellopers need to know there are serious consequences when listed buildings, trees etc are illegaly moved.
What would that achieve with the woke army. Police. Nothing would happen that wouldn't with usual half assed investigation. Probably a councillor who wanted to develop it. Is this why you against rebuilding. Just throw money away to local law firm instead while someone else makes off rebuilding on it.
Rubbish, this SHOULD be rebuilt immediately ,if it isn't this sets precedent country wide.
@@davidedgar7338 No, this was bought by the shady brother of a local waste/skip company - who needed it out of the way to give access to the landfill site behind it that he already owns. They had the diggers on site a week before it was torched, so all pre planned. No council stuff, just dodgy practices BUT if the thousands of mourners that are coming out of the woodwork had actually used it regularly, it wouldn't have closed in the first place...
The brick by brick rebuild is done at the developers expense, not the taxpayers.
@idonthavealoginname Precedent has already been set. Two listed buildings were ordered rebuilt after being demolished that I know of in London.
This seems to be dodgy. I hope the truth will out! Too much is at stake and we value our heritage.
🌟This is what travellers get up to on the coast in🏴 Wales
Disgraceful. Politician councils and mayors asleep at the wheel our heritage not protected in uk
I'd question how much do councils and mayors receive £££ to look the other way?
@@nadir8804 I hate to bring it down to everyone but this is not actually the council's fault: the brewery sold the pub to a private company and that company likely wanted to redevelop the land but couldn't. The grade 2 listing doesn't protect the building from damage by their owners and Historic England were on the verge of probably awarding it protected status before the pub came down. How fortunate for the developers....
@@rubix4195 yes, I wrote the comment before I got this other news. However the bulldozer was on the site faster than lightning.
@rubix4195 the pub was about to be made a listed building and the Arsonists ohh sorry Taylor family got a tip off from the council. The police investigation 🔎 will also be instructed to look the other way. I hate to break this to you but people are SICK and this corruption
They are all crooked and they are all out to make more disgusting filthy money by destroying things of beauty and history
Similar efforts occur in Melbourne Australia - where pubs on valuable land “accidentally burn down” freeing up developers to build apartments
Whether they manage to rebuild it to the exact same quirky condition that it was, I am pleased that they at least want to try.
I grew up in a small country village, the Horse and Groom pub was the focal point of the community.
Heart goes out to the locals and pundits. 😢
custodial sentences must be handed out - asap
i hope they not only build it back but really punish those who were responsible for its destruction. For those who want to see the pub as it was there is a You Tuber called ''Very Nearly Interesting''' who did a video about this very pub a few months ago Fascinating place.
And that TH-camr may indeed help with the restoration! The only way a restoration can happen is if the builders have a source of what the original layout looked like.
I went to this pub twice (i live about 2 hours away in Derbyshire), i had a fantastic meal the second time. Very quirky place. I do hope they rebuild, like with the Wellington, and sinclairs in Manchester. ❤
Good for you Andy. People shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this obvious criminal act.
Like all politicians, only interested when enough of a public outcry !
Someone needs to pay a price for this ……prison
I'm sure the criminals that did this will have the funds to make do the consequences of their crime.
They better - there is a precedent set already (as per the video) that the Planning Inspectorate would rule for a rebuild for a pub 100yrs old so why not for a pub 200yrs old?
They can sell a Bentley
Rebuilding it will never be the same.
No doubt with our soft leftie judges they will get a slapped wrist told not to do it again.
Excellent interview.
Informative, relevant and courteous.
Well done GBNews.
Also vapid and Asenine...but whatever floats your boat.
@@michaelcoward1902In what way was it vapid or asinine*?
It was supported but there was a mysterious break in and Marston breweries told the landlord not to open up intill repairs were completed. The access road to the pub was littered with rubbish from the tip next door tip.
When idiots set fire to the listed house and then bulldozed it, Should be made to pay for every brick put back that they took out.. It was not just their house, It was everyones to enjoy, Not now tho, These Bams must pay back the community they trashed

Avoncroft museum , take buildings down brick by brick and rebuild them , so did black cou try museum
@@tellitlikeitis-rg4ny rebuilding a crooked house, that was already on dodgy ground, in an extreme cost of living crisis? And it's sad, but what's the point. The reason it was a curiosity is that it happened naturally. If its rebuilt, its just a funfair attraction.

I’d love to see the planning application. Deliberately making a dangerous property.
The way they built houses now, there have no trouble building it as pissed as you like
It seems it was possibly an oft repeated insurance scam.
What about Arson and renting the bulldozer to demolished it without planning permission ????? Why police is not properly investigating
The owners should go to prison for this and force them to have the building rebuilt
Make them pay for it too...
The crooked pub was in south staffs , not in andy street jurisdiction
The crime scene was not cordoned off and there was zero police presence. I went to see this site as I live locally. People were climbing all over the rubble and the the 2 PCS0,s on duty there did diddly squat to stop the naughty kids who were tearing up the wooden bridge and throwing it in the streams. We voiced our concerns concern about the kids conduct and were told to go home.
should have been protected years ago via listed building status and conservation order note to council start protecting our heritage now.
100% deliberate.
They should make the owners pay for its total rebuild otherwise the consequences should be very dire for them
Here is a list of some of the pubs in the local area that have burnt down in recent history (earliest is 2006, I think, but most are much more recent).
(In the local area, list all those in the UK and there would be thousands...)
The Tayleur Arms in Longdon upon Tern, near Wellington
Swan pub at Waters Upton (Now houses)
The Vine, Lichfield Road, Aston (Arson)
The Ravenscroft, Small Heath (Plans for care home)
The Bagot Arms, Erdington (now a block of flats)
Pudding and Pint, Oscott (now houses)
The Farcroft, Handsworth (Fire damaged and derelict)
The Kingstanding pub, Kingstanding. (Soon to be an ALDI)
The Merrivale, Oldbury.(Badly fire damaged and now derelict)
The Queens Head, Smethwick (Now Houses).
Ring o' Bells, Yardley (Now houses)
The Crown and Cushion, Yardley (Now 100 apartment development)
The Harlscott, Shrewsbury (Arson)
The Countess's Arms, Western Heath (Arson)
The Bromford, Bromford Road (Now a care home)
The Anchor Inn, Brownhills (Arson. To be replaced by care home)
And all the other pubs in and around Curzon Street in Birmingham.
Widen your search, it happens to so many empty buildings , and bigger and better are soon built
Refuse any planning permission until they rebuild it,
Thats a lot of bricks to wire brush and re palletise and wrap.
When the "backhanders" go out everything will be forgotten.
How can anyone rebuild it under current building regulations?
With the poor quality of todays tradesmen. It shouldn’t be a problem to build it crooked again!
If it was so important why wasn't it patronised and profitable? Very fishy-sold /burnt/demolished in 2 weeks!?
Isn't it strange that some people think they can do anything they want ,they should be prosecuted
This is way Britain has been for 1000 years
It’s an insurance job clearly.
I doubt it, they just want the site clear for development.
They will make a fuss and strut. But it will die down and disappear unfortunately
Prosecute the digger driver, the digger opperator and fine and imprison those who engineered it
I hope those Responsible will go to Prison for this...why wasnt it a Protected Building ?
The new Taylors must be thick to book a JCB before setting it on fire
I'd like to know the name of the owner when it went on fire.
Alan and Carly Taylor of ATE Farms Ltd. They own the property and the landfill site. It was going through for redevelopment for industrial and office space earlier this year by Staffordshire County Council, somewhere where Alan Street has no jurisdiction.
They will cry racism and there will be luxury flats before you know it 🙈🙈
Carly and Adam Taylor of ATE farms. And it's not the first time they've done this type of thing.
No development until its resolved. There are consequences for arrogance such as this which isnt new and happening routinely all over. Most seem to get away with it...but not allowing work continuing focuses minds. No promises to rebuild but upfront designs with cash for reconstruction to likeness. Reconstruct pub first before all else! Can be done unless head of local party in cohorts with developer....again not unknown? Dont let them off the hook!
New forest district council allowed a huge greenhouse to rear of my home. Owner had consent to install wood chip boiler. Sadly thick smoke goes into my garden & inside my home & council refused to serve enforcement order! Now im condemned to slow death via inevitable lung cancer!
As long as it’s not taxpayers money.
I agree. The owners should be made to pay for it. Lessons must be learnt.
I'm sure some backhanders have been given out, otherwise they wouldn't have done it or even bought it. Trying to make a quick buck, greedy people!👍

@@dalebenton3354 well assuming these people.are taxpayers. It should come out of their money, not the taxpayers
These greedy easy folk have to be taught a lesson.🤬
Unlikely, the Planning Inspectorate forced the developers to foot the bill in the The Carlton Tavern case. James Watson, the Campaign for Pubs protection advisor, thought the developers would get a slap on the wrist and a 6k fine but the developers had to appeal because they knew it would cost them (not the taxpayer) to redevelop it all back to what it was. It's been rebuilt now since the ruling in 2015. (Plenty of sources online).
Absolutely ❤ they should also look into many many other cases of mystery fires and then hasty demolition to graded or historic locations 😢
Perhaps rebuilding could include using young aspiring people who would like a career in building and design. Feel sure there be quite a few near Dudley.
Why have the owners not been named and shamed they should be banned from buying anywhere else
I hope Andy follows this up
Something like this happened where I live in Germany. There was a house that was a site of historic interest and had been empty for many years. Surprisingly, a fire broke out and destroyed the house. Eventually the rubble was cleared away. It looks suspicious because new houses were built quite recently next this old house. 🤔
Someone needs to be jailed for this.
So it can be a failed pub again? It's a shame people didn't give it the attention and patronage when it was open as they are giving it now...
Indeed, a lot of virtue signalling here.
Think the new owner is crooked, bye pub, burn and demolish, then build flats, that’s my opinion.
This is Absolutely Disgusting...DODGY..

Well done Andy rebuild it brick by brick how have the diggers got in
I've been there several times over the years.
Make the people who gave the permission to knock this pub down pay for the re-build!
The council then . Mmm.
❤ let's get this rebuild brick by brick pls it's not just a pub it's different from all around the world we need ot back ❤❤❤❤
Easier to get change of use if the existing purpose built premises isn't there. The enforcement notice will require them to rebuild it in a structurally sound fashion.
They can ultimately be locked up for not complying with a notice but that costs the local authority loads for a prosecution. If they wanted to rebuild the property so it is structurally sound anyway, then the developer gets a win, win.
They better rebuild or I simply won't be pleased
Can we have the Leopard rebuilt in Stoke too. Oldest pub in the Pots that went the same way.
Oh, I really hope so!!!!❤
Of course full investigations need to take place to confirm what we already know...
Private property on private land....GOV funding-- public money ???
If successful they will put a compulsive purchase order on the land and the ex owners will pay for the re build.
